  1. This, from Costco: My daughter calls it Pork Crack.
  2. Crap. That's just about the only lettuce I buy on a regular basis.
  3. Ok, don't tell @Anna N this, but I've sprinkled the egg wash brushed pastry with a little grated Parm and that was lovely. However, I really agree that Cheddar just wouldn't go. Cheddar goes GREAT with those little cocktail sausages that you make pigs in a blanket with (and they are SO much better made with puff pastry than with Crescent roll dough), but it just doesn't go with sausage roll, in my opinion.

    Dinner 2018

Mark - Mr. Kim gave me an Anova for Christmas. I just showed him this and he is so excited. We have a rib roast in the freezer and he's ready to brave the 14F temperature to go out the the shed freezer and unearth it! Wow! New Year’s Day dinner. Cornbread and Scalloped Tomatoes: Ham, collards, black eyed peas, tomatoes and cornbread:

    Breakfast! 2018

Breakfast on the 1st while watching the parade: Quiche, sausage rolls (both freezer gifts) and the last of the Harry & David pears.
  7. Our fun and junky food mentioned upthread. After all the highfalutin foods eaten at those two weddings in 2016 & 2015, this was a welcome and relaxed celebration. Most of the pictures are self-explanatory: That terrible Velveeta, salsa and sausage slow cooker dip that somehow gets gobbled up: Meatballs w/ apricot/soy sauce/BBQ sauce: Crab Meltaways: Pigs in a Blanket: HAPPY NEW YEAR, Y’ALL!!!!
  8. I just used Jimmy Dean regular. I skipped the veggies and they were sublime. We had them again today for lunch. I rolled them, refrigerated the long rolls until firm, cut them into maybe 1 to 1 1/2-inch pieces, froze those and then put them into bags in the freezer. That way, you can cook just what you need. Put them on parchment or non-stick foil lined baking sheets, let thaw until the dough is still chilled, but not hard, brush with beaten egg and bake at 400F for about 15-20 minutes. I agree they are better warm, but why not get them all cooked a little bit before your guests arrive and them pop them back in the oven for 5 minutes?
  9. New Year's day will be the same menu as always: leftover Xmas ham, black eyed peas, collards, scalloped tomatoes and cornbread. I've got a hankering for kielbasa, so I think I'll stop at the store on the way to our friends' house. I like it grilled with a good char, but with a low of 10F and a high of only 28 tomorrow, they may get broiled!
  10. Thank you, ma'am! I've got to get on it so that Mr. Kim doesn't think he's gotten me a dud gift. He was very unsure.
  11. @Shelby – glad you like those Scalloped Tomatoes – we’ll be having them New Year’s day. @liamsaunt – your sandwiches look lovely and delicious! Mr. Kim smoked a couple of turkey breasts for Xmas Eve dinner: They turned out beautifully. Moist, lightly smoky and incredibly delicious: The table: Bread and rolls: Ham (cooked in the Nesco roaster) and Mr. Kim’s smoked turkey breast: Salami, Cheeses (Gouda, Havarti, and Cheddar) and crackers: Liptauer cheese and pumpernickel: Pickle-y stuff: Pretzel crackers and Boursin: My grandmother, Bebo’s, fruit salad: Salad greens with my dad’s paprika dressing, bleu cheese dressing and torn croutons: Smoked salmon served with cream cheese, capers and Melba toast: Ranch Oyster Crackers: I also made Brunswick Stew (no picture). I posted the desserts in the "Sweets" thread.
  12. Those eggs in puff pastry look delicious @David Ross! I’m impressed – every time I’ve tried something similar to that, I’ve ended up with overcooked eggs! Christmas breakfast – the obligatory Pillsbury Orange Danish tree: My MIL’s Candy Cane: Sour cream dough, filled with dried apricots and maraschino cherries. My grandmother, Bebo’s, fruit salad: Sausage rolls: These were new to me. I’ve always made my sausage rolls with sausage links that I’ve cooked because I was never convinced that raw sausage would cook through and I also thought raw would make the pastry too greasy. So, I asked some questions here at eG, was assured that all would be fine and JohnT supplied me with a recipe. They were fantastic – we all agreed that they were much better than my old ones. So glad I have more in the freezer! Smoked salmon, cream cheese and bagels: Mini quiche:
  13. Xmas goodies this year included gluten free sugar cookies: I wasn’t impressed, but my niece and friend who needed them loved them. Peanut butter cookies, peanut brittle and lemon chess tarts: Cinnamon pecans: Sugar cookies: Sponge candy and Nyåkers gingersnaps, which are the best gingersnaps I’ve ever had: Some candy gifts and turtle candies on the bottom left: Happy Accident Candy: This is made from chopped milk chocolate and the crumbs of the broken up sponge candy. I'm feeling pretty good about that sheen on my chocolate. Reeses Cup fudge and Aunt San’s fudge: Aunt San was my great-aunt and her fudge is just that creamy milk chocolate, evaporated milk and marshmallow type. I don't like breakable fudge - only creamy.
  14. We are back spending NYE with old friends after two years of NYE weddings. We've been celebrating with this couple for about 25 years - since we were broke and had little kids. In those days, it was cheaper to do it at home and not have to get babysitters! Now, all our kids are grown, but we still like this way best. We do 1970's-style "party food" - meatballs (w/ jam and BBQ sauce), hot artichoke dip, pigs in a blanket, Velveeta and salsa dip, Knorr spinach dip, Crab meltaways, etc. It's fun and junky and really, really good!
  15. I got lots of lovely food related gifts this year, but the BIG thing is that Mr. Kim gave me an Anova precision cooker!!! I am thrilled and, to be honest, a little intimidated. I'll be asking for guidance, I'm sure. So where are the sous vide threads?
  16. I made the sausage rolls for Xmas morning - I used @JohnT's recipe (well, mostly - since they were for breakfast, I left out the garlic and since I detest cooked carrots, I left them out, too. They were fantastic - everyone preferred them to the ones I used to make. The sausage was fully cooked and they weren't too greasy at all (my two fears). Thanks so much @JohnT! These are now my go-to for sausage rolls!
  17. Here you go, @ElsieD: Breadmachine Brioche!
  18. A mess of greens: Smoked pork neck and a little side meat: Judicious application of heat, pepper, hot sauce and a little brown sugar: Excellent collards. So THIS had to happen: Dinner: Sausage, Silver Queen corn, sweet green tomato pickles and…
  19. My bookclub decided to watch a movie instead of reading a book this month since no one had time to do that! By request, I made @Jaymes caramel corn. Big pile: That is sitting on a card table. LOTS of good stuff. Close up: This is the best caramel corn I've ever made. But I've never gotten the hang of getting the nuts to stick to the popcorn. They tend to congregate in the bottom of the bowl. Since I was running late and giving someone a ride, this and a handful of Raisinettes was my lunch!
  20. A toasted slice of the Holiday bread I’m making to give away for Christmas: 5 done, one in the machine and 2 more to make!
  21. My maiden name is Younger and we are supposedly related to the Younger brothers who rode with the James gang. So, maybe your family entertained mine! Your advice is apt - my mom gave away a bunch of childhood books that meant a lot to my daughter - she wasn't "that bad yet".
  22. Mr. Kim smoked a whole brisket for a work party this week. (Nibbles while I sliced it were enough for a 2nd dinner, so I guess this is where this belongs) Out of the smoker: It was as tender as can be and had great flavor, but wasn’t as moist as it should have been: He was very disappointed and is going to have to do some research. But the taste was fantastic.
  23. Dinner tonight was salad: Ho-hum. Homemade white bread in the background. Frozen chicken Kiev and roasted smashed potatoes: Mr. Kim had riced cauliflower instead of potatoes (I'm not a fan).
  24. I tested out bread machine Holiday Bread for possible gift giving a few days ago. Froze it then and thawed today. We really like it a lot – even Jess. This will be added to my Xmas goody baskets this year. Loaf (1 lb.): Slice:
  25. Funny coincidence - I just posted a picture of this very bowl in another thread. My stepdad's mum brought it for my mother from England many years ago - a "welcome to the family, even though you are a Yank" kind of gift. Along with pudding basins that she taught Momma how to use. We adore the bowl, but neither one of us can use it because of hand issues. It is just to heavy. But lovely nonetheless.
