  1. My question was from a thread that I started when I could not seem to find anything on the subject already here. Now that I have had a chance to read the thread, I am off to the home depot, and will give the box trick a shot. I have a copy of photoshop, I just not have learned how to use it :( I am sad to say.

I am in the process of learning to make and keep a food blog and in the process of doing this I have come to understand the pictures you put on your blog is just as, if not more, important as the writting. But my camera, a Casio exfilm 8.1 megapixel, does not seem to take that good of pictures. Now, my kitchen is kind of dark, and the light is a bit yellow so that maybe the cause. My question is this, what does everyone that has a blog do to take such good pictures? Do you "stage" the food? Use a special light? if so, what kind?

  4. Its funny this post should come up. For the longest time I have been wanting to get a food blog going and have not been able to figure out how to promote it enough to get any traffic on the darn thing. Participating in these challeges may just be one way of doing it. I have not particpated, I kind of gave up on the blog in frustration. I would contact blog rolls and see about having blog added with NO response.

    I don't get it...

  5. I have one of the adiago tea ones and I do like it and use it for a quick brew at home. I liked the fact that the travel mug had a lid on it.

    Oh well, I will have to get the water hot in my mug then pour it in the travel mug. :)

  6. I bought a Republic of Tea travel mug and was so excited to start using it, I threw away the packaging. I was wondering if anyone had one, and if they do have one, do they know if the bottom part of the mug (the double walled plastic part) is microwavable? I am thinking it is plastic so it maybe, but it being double walled I am hestitant. I searched the internet everywhere to find out, short of emailing the company, I am asking here....

    I never ordered anything from another country (I live in the US) I would love to order this book and have no problems working to get a translation. How would you order this book, being from the US, would I just pay in dollars what the exchange rate would be? Would they charge my credit card the amount in dollars, taking care of the exchange rate difference themselves?

  8. I am in the T shirt camp. I have "bake shirts" that are really messy old t shirts that I put on. They are comfy and I don't care if they get messy. I don't really own a chef's jacket, but if I had one, I would give it a shot and wear it, just for the fun of it, really.

  9. All of you who are telling me to run... do you think that, apart from trying to cook/taking him to good places... I can use any other tactics to get him to like food? When we're out and he just wants to stop at the first random place, should I just be more assertive and put my foot down and say, 'No. We are going to find somewhere actually good.' ?

    He's very stubborn and complains that my 'planning' (e.g. investigating what are great places to eat beforehand) is stressful (though I don't make him do any of it, I just make a little list of good places wherever we're going to).

    For me I think the fact that when you talk about what you are passionate about, his attitude is negetive. Being supportive of the interest of the other person is important in a relationship, you don't have to like everything the the other person likes (it is helpful, I admit) but you do have to support. And it makes me wonder if the relationship goes any further what else will he not support.

    I am fortunate in that my hubby likes just about everything I cook, however, there are only a couple kinds of seafood he likes, tilapa and salmon. Likes shrimp, don't like lobster, likes scallops. But that is it. I grew up in Seattle going down to Pike Place Market..it hurts.

    Eats far too much fast food. Way too much. Fast food don't even rank as food to me.

    No meat and fruit combination, or fruit in salads.

    And lately has been on this kick of "basic plain stuff is good" like plain blueberry pie, plain brownies. While yes, it is good sometimes, sometimes I like a blueberry pie with lemon marscapone cream, plain is sometimes just that.

    But I have to admit, he has come a long way since we first met. When we first got together he ate frozen or packaged food all the time. Was amazed the first time I made fresh pasta or cake from scratch. He even does a good deal of the cooking now and all from scratch. :wub:

  11. As a rather devout Buddhist, yes, it would be a little offensive to have pictures of the Buddha on the cake.

    Since the area looks foresty, I would go with berrys, I love the idea of a blueberry curd in the cake. Or you could decorate with them sugared on the top. Think elegant..simple... berrys, pine coneish...

  12. I am thrilled. I finally got my soil test back, and I am ready to lay that down and plant! I went and got some lemon grass to plant this year, and I need to transplant my rosemary out of the containers and put them in ground after I get some nitrogen in (there is NONE! NONE according to the test! I got some organic stuff in there now and it still not enough! so its 34-0-0 for me this year anyway) my beans are going in containers, and for the first time I am planting squash. I want to do blackberries, but I don't think my grown is acid enough. I need to read up on what it needs...does anyone know?

    I think blackberries only need slightly acid soils. Blueberries (grow naturally in the woods) want it very acid.

    Peat moss or oak leaves will acidify soil pretty easily. I have to amend with large amounts of peat moss because my soil is very sandy and basic for almost everything.

    Isn't soil testing great? It helps a lot to know exactly what is needed.

    Oh, there is also elemental sulfur. Probably quicker acting, but dramatic.

    Yeah, soil testing was the best thing I ever did...I am going to plant some now that I know only slightly acid. I love blackberries, it's the one fruit I don't mind spending extra to get it out of the store during winter.

    edit to add: I have not planted yet, I was going to this weekend, but it is going to snow here :shock: this weekend. So I am holding off until april.... :angry:

    I am jealous of all you that have stuff growing!!!!

    I happen to live in a neighborhood where lots of people use food stamps. Many have nice looking sneakers, and you know what a lot are buying with their food stamps - trust me, it doesn't come from the produce department; it's giant bottles of Coke, it's cookies, it's chips, it's spareribs and it's assorted other crap. So, while beautiful Star Farms organic produce, or $4 a pound grapes may not be attainable, a little education might go a long way.

All I know is, as I watched him during those reflective scenes in the easy chair I thought to myself "now that is one impressive index finger, how does he point it straight up in the air like that?".  My sorry index finger couldn't get me an open mic gig at the Chuckle Hut in Topeka, much less a reality show.

    I about spit my coffee out across the monitor when I read that! Way too funny! But strangly true...

    I liked the show. It's one of those guilty pleasure kind of things...

    I like Marco tries more to teach people and not just yell at them. Granted in Hell's Kitchen watching GR go off is the joy of the show, for me anyway.

    And yes, maggiethecat, there a certain something about him, isn't there...maybe its his presence, I can't quite put a finger on it. However, the vans do need to go, IMO.
