  1. Sorry, it has been a while since all my nephews were that age, you are so right, my bad.
  2. Here is a story with the results from the Wedding Cake Challenge that was sponsored by the Food Network during the Oklahoma Sugar ARts Show. Clickity here.
  3. Having enjoyed a couple of brunches, if it were me, I would bring the little gentleman along. In my book, they are never too young to be exposed to the good foods in life. And brunch is not as time intensive as a collection is. A suggestion, what about sitting over on the sofas in the wine bar? Or is that illegal in MO?
  4. Natalie Mickles story from the Tulsa World. As to if you have to be a professional to enter, I don't know. There are other catagories besides wedding cakes for all levels of experience that also get judged. For next year the theme of the wedding cakes is Not all cakes, no matter how popular are winners,
  5. A friend of mine was rooting for the Marie Antionette cake. I was glad the cake from Sri Lanka took a prize.
  6. Rules for the cakes for the show . Rule 7 covers the question of cake or styrofoam dummy.
  7. This event was held in Tulsa, OK during the Tulsa State Fair. There was almost 700 cakes entered in all different catagories. It was filmed by the Food Network again this year for showing probably in May or June. Here are pictures of the big winners in the wedding cake catagory. For cake artists, this is becoming the show to enter and for good reason.
  8. u.e., a suggestion, go out and pick up those chocolates from all those different places and have a chocolate tasting to see which one you prefer. You might surprise yourself. Don't forget to invite the rest of us to the fun. Just remember that most chocolates don't get shipped in the heat of summer. So with the holidays coming up, you will probably find fresher newer bars. Have you checked with Williams Sonoma to see what they are carrying now? 'Aaron, welcome to the fun.
  9. what about this grilled cheese place that was in todays paper, I am drooling as I type.
  10. ARe these places anything like the Blind Pig used to be in Tampa?
  11. I can vouch for this dessert, excellent use of the fall flavors. It was tough deciding between this and the chocolate ginger one.
  12. from the Food Media and News Boards Her peers liked her writing enough to give her this award.
  13. I ordered my copy of the book through Amazon UK and was notified that it was shipped today. I am hoping that it arrives as quickly as my Spoon book did from Amazon France. Reading all the posts about it makes the book intriguing.
  14. Interesting. If I had stumbled upon their website outside the context of this thread, I would never have considered it a grocery store of any sort. Their "Kitchen Help" link leads to a recipe and mention of frozen food and party trays but with no tab or link actually labeled "grocery," either across the top or down the left, it looks more like a discount department store which, I guess is the point. How much of their typical footprint is devoted to groceries vs. non-food items? And I'm a little curious what you do with cheese, potting soil and a DVD but it seems too personal to ask here ← Judy, you don't know Fred's, Oh my. My Fred's was the one in North Portland until I moved to the mountain and then the one in Gresham became my Fred's. When I moved away from the PNW, it took a time of withdrawal before I got over not having a Fred's somewhere close by. And they carried everything, with a much better mix than any superwalmart I have ever seen. I wonder if that is where walmart got the idea of being an everything store. If I am not wrong, didn't Fred's also have their own bank instore. That and GI Joes and the Nordstroms clearance closet and you were all set.
  15. When I was there Memorial Day, the best meal we had was at The Flatiron Cafe in downtown. It was within walking distance to our hotel. Nice atmosphere, good service and excellent meals.
  16. jgm, have they finished the redo on this market yet? If so, is it anything like Cental Market in Texas? Did they improve the cheese selection, is there a ready made foods area, did they improve the quality of the vegetables? Did they improve the quality of the instore bakery? What grocery lines did they expand? Curious minds are curious, I love a good grocery.
  17. ← Yes I did, I will be in touch.
  18. I know I can find migas (MEE-gus) in Austin, does anyone have any recommendations to find this dish in north Dallas? Colleyville, Plano, Frisco, etc?
  19. ldenney, I have two blocks in the freezer to send to you. PM me with details. The restaurant was a real throwback to another day. And the line went almost out the door when I met up with Jaymes there at 11:30am, we were trying to beat the crowd but didn't succeed. One of the waitresses we talked to has worked there for over 10 years and eats the chili for breakfast. The plate of spaghetti red included spaghetti topped with a lot of chili, I opted for the beans, I kind of like them a lot, a plug for Rancho Gordo. We split an order of the Tamale spread which included three small homemade tamales topped with chili. In all an interesting experience, if your driving down I-40 or driving historic US-66 then by all means stop off and check it out. Nothing but counter service, no tables, no booths. Service is Quick and with a smile. I don't know that I would make it a destination again. But anytime that I get to spend with the dynamic Jaymes makes it well worth while. You can order a hamburger with double cheese, if chili isn't your thing.
  20. After a full day of running all over town, I opted to stay close to my hotel for dinner. And it was a good decision, I must say. I even made it up to North KC to Link Creek Park on NW Waukomis. In 4 years of coming to KC, I have tried to get to 40 Sardines at least once a year. And I have never been dissappointed with my visits to dine there. Tonight for dinner I had Lobster stuffed tomato with blackeyed peas and arugula grilled asparagus and artichoke salad with parmesan crisps Red Grouper with grits 2 ways and swiss chard ONce again, it was a hit with me. The service was excellent, being solo, the waiter took good care of me and made a good suggestion, to add goat cheese to the grilled salad. He didn't try to push anything on me, I opted for no wine and it was no problem. Tomorrow I head home, but not until I make my regular stop off at D&D to get road food for the drive down. In all, a successful visit.
  21. the town of Vinita Oklahoma has a whole festival each fall that is centered around the eating of calf fries.
  22. those things were darn good. I could eat one right now.
  23. Not really, I got there about 9:15 and all the display cases were full of great looking goodies. It makes me glad that I don't live nearby. The eclairs and the palmiers also looked yummy. You can see for yourself if you clickety here and then click on the products link.
  24. I went to Artisan Francais for breakfast this morning. The quiche lorraine was very nice, the crust flakey and buttery. It was heated to order in on oven. I also had the petit pain au chocolate to go with it and the medium cafe au lait. A perfect morning temperature to sit outside and read the paper. Zeemanb, I recommend you check this place out. The bread looked great. Chicagowench, thanks for the heads up on this place. I don't have to go to Dean and Deluca anymore for pastries in OP. And I saw where the Crate and Barrel is going in.
  25. War Eagle Mill I have never ordered from them. Just thought I'd mention that. ← I have, they are very nice to work with and shipped my order right away. I have actually been to the mill in rural Arkansas near Fayetteville.
