  1. Yes. As someone who grew up in Vancouver, where most Chinese ingredients are common place in all supermarkets, I too am anxiously awaiting the opening of the T&T Supermarket.
  2. I checked out ottawafoodies and chowhound as well. I'm wary of any post that proclaims a place to have the best egg rolls. That's not the sort of Chinese I'm looking for. Thanks for the help. I'll check them out.
  3. that's just depressing.
  4. As someone who has recently moved to Ottawa from Vancouver I'm looking for at least decent Chinese food. I'm not asking for Chinese restaurants like those in Vancouver, but somewhere that is at least decent. Are the Yangtze and Chu Sing the best I can expect?
  5. Has anyone heard anything about Tojo's moving to a new location?
  6. Red Pepper is no more, being replaced by Portabelo Restaurant, to be opening soon, (looks like very soon). ← I noticed a sign on their window this morning. They are openning today.
  7. the first time I tried the pork jerky from the place on Fraser I kept eating it until my jaw hurt.
  8. the top Zagat ratings for Vancovuer for food were 29 - West 28 - Lumiere, Bishop's, Vij's, Pear Tree. 27 - Tojo's, Le Crocodile, La Regalade There were a bunch with 26 including C
  9. Bee Kim Heng Beef & Pork Jerky 4194 Fraser Street Vancouver, BC (604) 875-8688 If crystal meth was made from meat this is what is would taste like. It is that addictive.
  10. Go to Smiles Cafe and have a crabhouse sandwich. Like a traditional club sandwich, only instead of roasted turkey, it has fresh crab meat. Absolutely brilliant.
  11. I was messing around on the Vancouver Coastal Health webpage today looking at inspection reports at places I've eaten recently and found that if you search Memphis Blues you get a listing for a proposed location at 1629 Lonsdale. Is this new? Are they expanding on to the North Shore? Anyone know anything?
  12. They'd been in operations for maybe six months. I don't think I ever saw more than two or three of the tables occupied whenever I walked by.
  13. If you're driving through Swift Current, you *must* stop at the Husky Station for the baked goods. Not the big plaza one for the truckers, but the other one on the south side of the highway with the strip of fast food places and motels. 610 South Service Road East. The cookies are fantastic. The sticky buns are very good. You will not regret it. Gawd I miss the Husky station cookies.
  14. I really can't recommend trying the same duck dish Ho Yuen Kee (46th and Fraser) strongly enough. It is fantastic. But get it with a large group because it is incredibly rich. It's not on the menu and you have to order it when you make your reservation, but it is well worth the effort.
  15. Has anyone been to Cipriano's recently. It's been more than a decade since I was last there. I enjoyed it then and was thinking about going, but I have heard mixed reviews recently.
  16. If you're on the North Shore be sure to check out Hamaei. It's at the Westview shopping plaza. Yes, it's in a strip mall, but don't hold that against it. Very good fish, nice seasonal hot dishes.
  17. Well I made the full-sized version. I don't think I'm going to be making it again anytime soon. Not because it wasn't fantastic or didn't work, I just don't think I need to overdose on gingerbread pudding and gain 500 pounds and then die of a heart attack. I didn't make the ice cream. Instead I bought the ginger ice cream and instead of pumpkin bought nutmeg from La Casa Gelato. The nutmeg was fantastic and would recommend it to go with the gingerbread pudding. Once I figure out how to properly post a picture I'll do so.
  18. Oh no! I have 168 posts AND I joined eGullet one day before you, Neil, can a deal be struck? Pretty please? I'll bring you some yummy Japanese snacks! ← You can always spot a rookie eh Neil? The answer of course is ordering the $35 menu AND an extra order of Hanger Steak. Have the salmon (from the $35 menu) as a fish course, the hanger as your main, and the GBP for dessert. The "lightweight" way around this would be to order the $25 menu. Have the GBP as your dessert with a glass of Township 7 Late Harvest. The Dessert Duo would of course be eaten afterwards, with coffee ... or a cheese plate and port. See the benefit of hanging around us veterans?? A. ← I think I'll have to go with the lightweight version. I trust it comes with a cardiologist referral.
  19. I'm kind of sad. I just checked the HSG menu. I'm going to have to choose either the hangar steak on the the $25 menu or the gingerbread pudding on the $35 menu. I can't have both.
  20. I'm headed to Ho Yuen Kee on Fraser this week. Any suggestions for "must haves" on their menu? Anything I need to order ahead of time?
  21. From reading the Star's take it doesn't look like the techniques are very difficult, just the shopping and lots of time to follow the instructions. I'd bet she could have saved a lot of running around with a trip to T&T Supermarket where she would have found most of the Asian the ingredients in one place.
  22. In terms of complexity, how do the recipes compare with say the French Laundry Cookbook?
  23. Has anyone ordered the cassoulet from Oyama as part of their cassoulet festival? Is it worthwhile?
  24. Thanks all. Will likely bite the bullet and shell out the cash for the book. I don't think a library copy will do, don't think they would like cooking stains left on the book from spills in the kitchen when I return it.
  25. Has anyone seen a copy? Thoughts? Is it worth it?
