Aha! That's the spot my friend keeps talking about. Only he was so vague about the place. "It's this place inside a senior center and it's really home style japanese food. I think it's somewhere in vancouver but it could be burnaby. Definitely in BC." Thanks buddy. I'm excited to try it out.

Those 3/8 (or something) circular booth seats look comfy. I hope they are!

I can't help but be excited to see our "little" city get onto a list with the words "best..." even though there are probably a million questions as to what criteria they used. I'm happy to see my neighbourhood Aurora Bistro listed as well! World class food comes to Vancouver! We certainly have an amazing variety of food which I think makes us, in many ways, very unique. Since they rated Degustation pretty highly in New York (I loved that place!) I'm going to assume there's some reasonable unit of measure they're using to make these Kudos

http://www.tequilakitchen.ca/ Just heard about this place. Has anyone gone yet? I was hoping to try it out sometime this month. It has a soft opening right now. $25 set menu 1043 Mainland Yaletown

That's my favorite yogurt! I was so excited when they handed some out at the skytrain to students going to SFU. Woo joy! Again one of those "so fat, so good" foods.

I get different pronunciations from different friends: "fuh" is the most common but I also get "fah" and "fu-uh" like you extend the "u" sound and move it up and octave as you say it. I'm still working on "Cha Gao". every time I order it the waitresses laugh at me.

Everyone loves a good old fashioned Pho Down! I'm excited to see the article! How do the places get on the shortlist for a visit? I know my criteria weighs heavily on, of course, the soup but also the freshness of the basil. The basil for me is key. The Cilantro falls just behind that.

I got a Christmas gift class for Feb. Sticky Buns yum!!!

That blows my mind. People actually book like 10 places and only show up to like 3 or 4 so they can have places "reserved" in case they want to go. This explains why Lumiere and C were booked up so quick. I guess in a strangely comforting way maybe we can snap up a cancellation (if they were polite enough to at least call to cancel). We're signed up for Lift and La Terazza mmm.

Wow so the news of Mr. Feenie and Lumiere hasn't deterred the dineout crowd one bit. Lumier is sold out of tables for 4 (at least) already!

Where to buy Japanese snacks: Calorie Mate and F-C
fud replied to a topic in Western Canada: Cooking & Baking
I'm dying to find Sapporo's "Diet Water" in stores around town as well as it makes for a great gift! Other good places to try would be: - Fujiya (Clark, south of Hastings) - Yaohan (Richmond no 3) - T&T Supermarket (The one by chinatown or the one in Richmond tends to have more japanese snacks) -
Williams-Sonoma Granville opens this weekend
fud replied to a topic in Western Canada: Cooking & Baking
I'm more of a fan of Crate & Barrel which is also pretty classy but I find the prices a little more in line with reality. Looks like I'm still going to Seattle for some gear. I actually did not know Williams Sonoma owned restoration hardware. That is quite the street ownership they have on Granville. -
I could not have put it better. I've been a fan of his show forever. I think I probably watched more than half of his shows for the enjoyment of watching him enjoy cooking more than to learn how to make something.
-
No wonder there was quite a showing last night when I popped by! I was beginning to think it wasn't closing after all!

The Taro Duck is amazing too mmmm.

I'm amazed at how popular this place is! 40 minute line-ups for cream puffs? I will say they are pretty tasty but definitely not worth waiting in line for. I'm sure as the "hype" dies down so will the lines. My friend was at beard papa in Hong Kong 2 years ago and she said the hype had already subsided there. Has anyone looked at the franchising information? It's pretty steep - again for ceam puffs!

Does the Richmond night market count? Of course it is already over but next summer, you can enjoy some rather oily but still not bad dim sum fare (but be aware you'll be paying more for it) well into the night. I've always said night-time dim sum is such a great idea. The all-day breakfast has always been a popular item, why not all-day dim sum?

That's a little silly. Mr. Feenie hasn't been COOKING in these kitchens in a long time. The execution of the kitchen and the food is a tribute to a good menu (by Feenie) and excellent execution by his kitchen staff. Just because he's out of the restaurant in the media's eyes doesn't mean the quality would drop overnight. Seems like a good time to jump on this opportunity!

Ooh ooh exciting. I was planning to get some Lee's this weekend (yum!)

I guess they're lease was up? I don't think an owner can raise rent after the lease was signed over a certain percentage as per the same type of rules as the rental tenancy act (perhaps a percentage allowed is higher). Commercial Tenancy Act I guess that is the nature of renting space for your business right? The owner does reserve the right to kick you out when the lease is up. I am pretty sad SOMA had to move though as I really liked their space and location.

Sorry chowman I was misinformed. My friend has been summarily flogged. I walked there myself tonight and found out the samw sad news. There is also no indication of when it be open. ←

I've had my head in the sand clearly since I live not 5 blocks from this place and I just drove by it last night remarking "hey! Cascade Room is open!" Looking forward to giving it a shake.
