  1. My only suggestion is to move to Vancouver....! On a side note, do Winnipeg Jews eat Chinese food on Christmas like we do in Vancouver? And then goto the movies?
  2. As above... I would rate Benares on the low side of the High-End Indian places...! The room is great tho!
  3. I recently ate at Crazy Homies, a small mexican restaurant in Westbourne Park Area in Notting Hill. Considering the dearth of quality mexican restaurants here in London I was quite excited to try this place on the recommendation of my American friend (she attends Cordon Bleu in London... so I do value her opinion... plus she grew up in the States, where I believe Mexican food is probably more prolific than hamburger joints!). Upon arrival I was already impressed. The place has a real Mexico-city trendster aesthetic. Sort of like the Mexican version of Hoxton, but far more fun and brighter... I really liked the look of the place, and the servers, etc., all looked very cool. The place is quite cramped, though, which fits quite nicely and makes it all the more fun. The drinks are ALL tequila based, which is good if you like tequila (which I dont... usually) but despite this I found their margaritas to be excellent! They muddled lots of real fruit and were quite heavy-handed with the liquor, albeit premium varieties! I've never really tried premium tequila (aside from shots.. which i still find repulsive), and strangely, it is actually not as gag-inducing as Jose Cuervo, etc.! As soon as we sat down we ordered chips and salsa, which were GREAT! They make their own chips which are very thin and crispy. Most tortillas in the UK are really thick and generally terrible, as is the store-bought salsa (usually low-quality american brands). The salsa was all freshly made and on par with anything I've had in the US. Main course I had a Chicken Enchilada which is comprised of a fresh flour tortilla filled with soft-baked chicken, and then covered with enchilada sauce and cheese. It was served with beans and rice, both of which were quite tasty. I usually order beef in American mexican places so i cannot really compare, but hte chicken was very soft and very tasty. Overall, I would definitely return and recommend this place to anyone that wants mexican in London. In my experiences, it is the best mexican in london, and possibly some of the best mexican i've had outside mexico/US. JOsh.
  4. Interestingly, Marmite is also an old army remedy for crabs. ← Hahaha... awesome!
  5. I saw a REALLLY old school bench tabled cafe today in Fulham Broadway London... cannot remember the name, but i belive its on Fulahm street. Seriously, incredibly perfect for your show! They make omlettes, etc., but way cool old school spot.
  6. I've been a Bovril guy my whole life... though my sister love Marmite..! I usually spread Bovril on toast with butter, its so delicious i cannot even say!!! My god, its 4:30AM and i just walked in the door..... need a piece of taost w/bovril ASAP!
  7. I was in Greece not so long ago and found that Canadians do greek better than the Greeks....! Okok , thats not true, i havent even been to greece....! I am exhausted, but thoroughly proud of myself for hanging my plasma on the wall... hopefully it wont fall...? Anyway, I always ate at Ouseri.. the lady that works there is totally awesome and calls me Sugar...! xoxo Josh.
  8. I like buying that 3-1 Lipton Tea... its milk, sugar and tea and you just add water. It tastes really artificial but delicious! WICKED AWESOME TEA EXPERIENCE!!!!
  9. I'm looking for a truly exception sandwich in London.....! I cannot stomach the run-of-the-mill sandwich shops selling tinned tuna with corn, egg salad, prawn salad, etc. etc...... Thanks in Advance!
  10. Providores Cafe (Marylebone, London) - Food was sensational, service excellent. Truly a rare find, especially considering the prices were very reasonable. I had one of, if not the, best risottos of my life, along with the best lamb samosa i've ever tasted... very eclectic menu, but every dish so far has been a hit. River Cafe - Nothing more to be said. Arbutus - as above! Also, I tried a terrific Gastropub in Chelsea named "The Crown @ Chelsea" just off of Fulham road. The place itself is delightful and the service is excellent.... its tiny but they truly make u feel at home. The food is simple, but delicious. Will likely become a regular considering how close i live.
  11. My sister attended Oxford for a number of years doing her PhD and swears that an Indian place called Saffron is the best indian restaurant she's ever been to, as does her boyfriend (she claims it is better than Benares or Chutney MAry, though i cannot comment) I went to visit her a few times and found there to be quite a dearth of good food to eat in the city center.
  12. I find the chinese food in chinatown to be pretty dire. That being said, there are certain places with certain dishes that are quite good. I had a roast duck the other night at New China and was actually EXCELLENT. The duck was very flavourful and the meat was fresh. The rest of the meal was mediocre, but the duck, at 7.80 for a whole bird, was a great deal and very delicious. My friends and I (all from HK) often goto Cafe TPT or Cafe De Hong Kong (Charing Cross Road) for cheap HK style food. Cafe De Hong Kong has a reasonably good Beef Brisket Curry, and TPT has good noodle dishes. Usually, i dont bother with 'higher' end chinese in London b/c franky, I'll be disappointed.
  13. Thanks to everyone that has contributed.... so many excellent suggestions!!!! I am leaning towards going to Rye in Sussex as it sounds to be exactly what i am looking for and quite close to london for a day-trip. Hopefully i'll have the opportunity to try a few more places as well in the coming weeks.
  14. Hello All, I was considering going to Dover, as per another topic, but am now rethinking. I would go anywhere with up to 2 hour via train from London, and would most like a quaint type town with a nice pub, some good sights (a cute towncenter qualifies), and a restaurant. I would love a great smaller restaurant with some 'heart' if possible. The type with a fireplace, and a robust woman / mother figure serving food whilst reciting proverbs....! Any suggestions would be mich appreciated. Regards, Joshua.
  15. As per the topic, I am looking for the best restaurants in Dover. Need not be fancy, but would love something truly delicious. Not touristy, if possible (local haunts....)! Thanks in advance, Josh.
  16. I moved from Vancouver Canada where there are literally hundreds of pho places... to london where there are like, 10, all congregated on one street in the east end (kingsland road). Granted, i lived on that road for a few months when i first moved here, but honestly, they cannot compare to the pho i rmember from home (which I ate at least 2-4 times a week)..... very sad...!
  17. I suppose I wasn't clear enough.... I was joking outright! Who cares about health codes or fire codes? I store my meat in the shower, use my garbage disposal to chop vegetables, and use my bbq in the living room....
  18. As a tax payer and restaurant owner (well, one day maybe) i am furious that no one exposes these illegal operations. Not only are these meals undermining our taxation revenue schemes, but they are jeopadizing customer health and safety by cooking in kitchens that may have health code violations, and fire safety violations. That being said, the whole scene seems a bit pretentious, but without merit. I like the idea of having a members only restaurant better that is exclusive based on strict criteria.... like a restaurnat that may only be frequented by heart surgeons, queens council barristers and royals. That way, rather than being envied because 'you know someone that knows someone,' you're resented becuase you're actually superior. I strongly believe in reincarnation and social hierarchy so why bother being a good person in a past life if you cannot take such advantages in your current life?
  19. If anyone is PMing a/b it, I'd like to know as well....! I am not affiliated with any law enforcement agency, or other government organization. I am naturally secretive and highly underhand and would thus be perfectly suited to dine at such an establishment.
  20. Its funny... doogh is absolutely gross IMO in Vancouver... that fizzy concoction is nothing like the doogh in Iran. In Iran, it is sold alongside milk.... most people drink doogh instead of milk there. It is freshly made and NOT carbonated. Its basically just a salty (less so than this one) yogurt drink.
  21. I was REALLY disappointed by the 'cakes at Cupcakes... they are so heavy... i find the cake part flavorless and floury, and the icing, overly thick and too sweet.... A good cupcake, to me, is light with a thin layer of frosting!!! Shouldn't make u feel sick afterward!!!
  22. Around Bond St. itself there aren't THAT many restaurants, tho i enjoy going to Sothebys Auction house for lunch.. the food is good and it is a very interesting atmosphere.... art dealers and buyers, etc.... In the Picadilly area, just a few blocks east of there, you have a plethora of good restaurants... i really enjoyed Cocoon the few times I've been there, its a really busy place with excellent chinese/asian food. The bar extends through the restaurant so you feel like you're in the middle of the action whilst eating. On Dover St. there is an American restaurant called Automat which has mac'n'cheese, hamburgers, etc in a slightly upmarket surrounding. i saw Bill Clinton eating there the last time i went... the first few times i went there it was rather inconsistent, but they appear to have gotten a bit more consistent with the food... the mac'n'cheese is quite good, as is the rest of the menu.... tho i dont know if american food is a worthwhile choise if you're just in for the weekend.
  23. thanks for all the suggestions.. shoudl keep me occupied for a while to come!
  24. I've been living in London for a few months now and am looking for some suggestions on where to go for energetic yet fine dining restaurants. I've already gone to Hakkasan, Cocoon, Yautacha, Amaya, Benares, Chutney Marys, Veeraswami, and am looking for a few places with the same sort of 'vibe.' Any suggestions? I like places with lively bars attached like Coccon/Hakkasan...! Thanks.
  25. And no I don't think its discrediting noone to say nuffink about Wendys. I always thought their burgers were great - expecially the Hamburger Deluxe which have a lovely sweetness from the tomato and the sauce ya just don't get a MaccyDs. Didn't think the bigger burgers were as good though... ta J ← funny u say that, as i always order 2 hamburger deluxes in leiu of a larger burger (they are sorta sickly)... but in fast food world, nothing beats the junior hamburger deluxe at wendys (excpet maybe teh baby burger at A&W)...
