  1. http://www.vistadoro.com As far as I can tell, the only thing the DON'T have is a winery. They have a cooking school, farm product, jam, a woodcraft artisan... We are really looking forward to it. And later in the season they sell all kinds of heirloom tomatoes. REALLY looking forward to that.
  2. I cook in silence. I loathe the radio, or any other distraction to what I am doing. Used to drive me mental at work. We took turns picking the tunes. I was not a popular girl on 'Silent Saturdays' as I used to call them
  3. This disturbs me in a way I can't even articulate. The FDPIR is a Federal program that provides commodity foods to low-income households, including the elderly, living on Indian reservations, and to Native American families residing in designated areas near reservations. The misappropriate of this resource is criminal. Next time "Big Lou" shows up with a bag of bakery mix, he should get a kick in the ass, and a lesson on what it's like to be hungry and finding all of the aid exhausted by people like him. I'm not even going to start on the ethics of accepting this food from him. Disgusting.
  4. Those puffy cheezies - you know, the ones in the giant orange bag that have the consistency of packing foam - have blue cheese powder as a flavoring...so if blue cheese powder exists, it stands to reason that one could get ahold of some and sprinkle it on a chip, right? Or, if you are really adventurous...try these! http://www.taquitos.net/snacks.php?snack_code=490
  5. The Bread Lady - some really nice stuff...'Sour dough breads are our specialty along with assorted sweet baked goods that are baked fresh daily in our country bakery. All bakery products are made with certified organic flour. We also feature granola, English toffee, peanut brittle, chocolate-covered almonds, chocolate truffles and other rich gourmet specialties. Purchase organic produce and herbs or pick flowers in our U-pick flower garden. ' Carol and Stuart Robson 47888 Prairie Central Road Chilliwack Phone:604.792.6240 Fax: 604.792.6240 The strawberries were just okay...fine for jam and a batch of ice cream, but not much good for eating out of hand...a little squishy for my liking. They weren't all that sweet, either. The jam turned out really well. Also made a pineapple ginger that is really great. Will see what I can pick up this weekend to mess with. We go in all kinds of weather...I figure if they have a store, then there is shelter and I am going anyway I was raised in the rain, and my husband is British, so it's normal weather to him as well. I'd like a Tardis myself...and am quite enjoying the new Dr. Who, Christopher Eccelston....although I could give Billie Piper a miss Maybe we will see you on the farm this weekend!
  6. I buy it at Shoppers Drug Mart...or Sears...sometimes Zellers or Walmart...for sure have it at Safeway and Save-On as well. It's pretty available in bar form. Good stuff...I use the 90% to make killer chocolate cherry macaroons.
  7. Clearly you aren't a Dr. Who fan...the Tardis is the Doctor's time travel machine Since you have a car, if you are interested in adventure, you might like to check out Vista D'Oro in Langley...grand opening is this weekend and I hear Jamie Maw will be on hand, as well as the chef from C. Then there are the Krause Brothers, who seem to grow everything under the sun, and have a market store at the farm. Vista D'Oro 20856-4th Avenue Langley Krause Brothers 6179-248th Street Aldergrove The two places are only 12 miles apart, so we are hitting both this weekend.
  8. Oh my God...you just changed my life! WOW!!!!! I want one of those! I'm going to make one this weekend, just because I can! I've never seen anything like it...my sister is going to have a cow! With regards to the cardamom bread...is it filled in any way, like with almond paste or is it just a sweet yeast bread with cardamom added?
  9. Sadly, Farmer's Markets of the 'stalls in a parking lot' variety are few and far between out here in Chilliwack. A few years ago we had a thriving market in Chilliwack, but then they hired a 'consultant' and that effectively killed it. The market has not made an appearence yet this year at all, and last year seemed to consist of a lady selling wool, two plant vendors selling hanging baskets and the odd veggie vendor, primarily with one or two items, like tomatoes or peppers. We have far better luck driving about Yarrow and pulling into driveways with signs up. Wisbey's, a farm vendor with a store, is opening on the 15th, and they are a good source of fresh food items. We also make frequent forays to the Aldergrove area for farm fresh produce, including sour cherries. We have excellent artisnal cheeses out here, and both places have stores, so it's easy to stop in and get cheeses, plus they have baby goats to play with! I do all my own baking and my hubby is a bread expert, so we have that covered, but there a couple of excellent artisnal bread places out here, as well as home baking to be had. It's a bit early, but this weekend we did get all the strawberries we could handle and I made three batches of jam, as well as cheesecake topping. Also made and jarred lots of snappy pineapple ginger sauce from a two for one deal on those super sweet pineapples from the grogery store. It's the start of preserving season for us, and as the product rolls off the field, our kitchen will be jam and chutney central. We are going to have to move to a bigger place soon, running out of room for all our jars!
  10. The Strawberry stands out here are in full swing...going to be a short season, so if you want them, this is the weekend to get them. Tomorrow it will be jam jam and more jam at our house. Test driving the fancy new maslin pan from Lee Valley.
  11. I think you mean David Hasselhoff...Hasselbeck is the football player married to that Elizabeth chickie late of Survivor, currently of The View...how I know that I do not know...hidden depths that astound even me. My only question about this place is what are they going to do when the tides shift and rise and the ocean starts creeping in the door? These things have a way of happening...have some appies while you dangle your feet in the water, perhaps?
  12. Here is a link to edible flowers... http://whatscookingamerica.net/EdibleFlowe...FlowersMain.htm yes to the roses...but you must get the unsprayed ones.
  13. Of course all you need is a sharp knife to cut the bottom off the carton and snarf away! Any nefarious ice cream eater would be in that carton in a second! Or maybe it's just me and my evil ice cream loving mind
  14. I did my own wedding cake...but opted out of the baking and bought the sponge from a local baker, which ended up being a blessing. All I can say is keep it simple, the fancier you go the more frantic you will be. Buy more icing sugar than you need, you will run out. And don't sweat it if it isn't perfect...flowers cover a multitude of sins. We had about 40 people...we did an afternoon tea reception for which I did all the food. I hired two teenagers from the culinary program at the high school to do the table and they did a great job. In the evening, we had a potluck dinner, which turned out great and everyone is still talking about it. Best wishes, keep the stress low, and remember, it's supposed to be fun!
  15. Eggs, in any kind of recognizable form. I've never eaten one in my life...even as a small child I would turn away and try to squeeze out of my highchair. They look good, they even smell good, and I want to like them, but I just can't get them in my mouth...slap them in a chocolate cake and I'm all over it, but give me a beautiful omelet or a slice of quiche and try as I might, I just can't get my mouth to open.
  16. this is irrelevant, but for those of you that own a copy of the Patricia Wells book on Robuchon, have a look at the picture of the pineapple dessert....there is a giant hair on the plate! Entertains me to no end, that does!
  17. I often wonder the same thing in relation to the purchase of a new computer or printer...what is is about opening that box that turns people into mental midgets? But I digress... I heard yesterday that there will be a grand total of 63 different food vendors at this years market...sounds like my kind of place. Where does one park? Is there a shuttle from somewhere? Public Transport of any kind? Can anyone recommend the least stressful method of getting there and then getting out again?
  18. I guess you live in a different world than I do...and that's okay. I recognize that some people live in a world of plenty, where everyone has a great job and plenty of money to spend on food and the luxury of a) knowing how to cook and b) having the time to do it right every time. But guess what? Not everyone lives in that world. My best friend works part time at Shoppers Drug Mart for 8 bucks an hour, then goes across town and cares for her 80 year old wheelchair bound mother, doing all her housework and shopping and taking her to medical appointments. She works like a donkey, and probably exists on less than you spend on wine in a month. And she does it all with a smile on her face. She had to work for 30 minutes to pay for those natchos and that lemonade and that is the best she can do with what she has. That she even has an hour a week to just sit down on the lawn chair that serves as furniture in her crap apartment that is all she can afford and eat natchos and gossip with me is a rare thing. And her friendship and company is so much more important to me than what she serves. You really me off with this...which is fine - that's on me, not on you. Your well developed sense of entitlement probably serves you well in some arena of life, but it's not going to fly with me. I hope the next dinner party you go to is nothing but Farnese, generic hot dogs on stale buns and beans from a can. I have to go now...my shorts are riding up and my flip-flops are chafing.
  19. Wow Keith, remind me to think twice before I invite you to my house for drinks... I'm with you, Deb - I'm just happy to be invited over for the company. I have a friend that routinely serves cheese flavored Natchos and lemonade she makes with RealLemon juice out of a bottle. So what. I love that woman. She has been my best friend since I was 10. We share everything, including a birthday, and I would be incredibly upset if she felt that she couldn't invite me over because she had nothing 'good enough' for me. Pan-a-Pan sounds like fun - I have added it to the list for the next trip to the city...if for nothing more than the wonton cups, because I can never find the right kind of wontons to deep fry - they always end up big and puffy and greasy. Thanks for the tip. And I too would like to hear about the birthday celebration
  20. I think they sell Paneer at Rangoli...but I could be wrong... could be Saag Paneer only.
  21. Okay, I feel dumb for asking, but what's wrong with the wrapping at Costco? Is it a plastic, cheese can't breathe thing?
  22. The Noodle Box...not much eat in action, it's primarily takeout, at least at the Fisgard location. But if you are looking for a meal on a Sunday night, it's good food, cheap and there are two locations. One on Fisgard and one closer to the Parliament Buildings somewhere.
  23. Ahhh Smithers.... I was a chef on the Babine River...boat in only, far from town, no days off, no trips to town. One hell of a long Steelhead season. Nearly killed me. And all the food I had to work with came from Smithers on a boat. Flour was always damp, lettuce always frozen...oy. It was a real adventure. No electricity...gas stove. My brother still lives there...he's a champion garlic grower in his spare time - says the best place to eat is at his house!
  24. Today, Happy Goats Dairy opened the cheese shop at the Chilliwack Branch...it's called 'Heavenly Cheese'. Heavenly Cheese 7350 A Barrow Road, Chilliwack, BC V2R 4J8 Phone: 604-823-7241 www.goatcheese.ca They have all things goat - cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream. Quite a few suppliers of cheese - McClennan, Natural Pastures, Mountain Meadow, Gorts, etc. I got Parmagiano Reggiano at $33.60 a kilo, Grana Padano was $24.40 a kilo. Got some ash chevrotina from McLennan that was only $1.15 for a round that weighs about 160 grams...I suspect it was a misprice but I wasn't paying attention when my hubby picked it up. They have fab Happy Days feta, too...voted 6th best in the world recently. and lots of other things...it's right close to Anita's Organic Flour Mill. Oh and they have all manner of European specialty foods, tiniest capers I have ever seen, some nice breadsticks, Himalayan pink salt, and interesting other little bits and pieces.
  25. Oh we have corn...or we will :-) Waiting for Joiner's to start selling it by the roadside. Best part of the goat cheese place was the baby goats...I didn't know they would try and eat my arm when I stuck it in the pen!
