  1. I'm looking for places that serve pan-fried chicken, preferably in P.G., Montgomery or northern counties, or Baltimore, but anywhere will do for the real McCoy. I've had it many times at Crisfield's in Silver Spring, and I believe Florida Avenue Grill has it and maybe Flavors in Falls Church. But there must be (I hope) a bunch of places that serve it but I just haven't found out about them. Thanks very much, Kevin
  2. The Tennessee place is likely Corky's. Very famous (always in Food Network) and supposed to be very good. One ofthese years I'll try that instead of Carson's, but it's so easy to order from Carson's and I know he likes it. I'm sure you will like what you get. K http://www.corkysbbq.com/ ********************************************** Haggis man Posted Today, 12:14 PM Looks good! I placed a order
  3. I mail-order ribs to my nephew in Pennsylvania every year from Carson's Ribs in Chicago. The service is outstanding, the ribs and extras (sauce, bread, brownis) are delicious and the price, while expensive, is not outrageous (at least to me). Thanks, Kevin http://www.ribs.com/
  4. Shouldn't that have been a Pina Colada? Oh yeah, that was the werewolf Kevin There is something about a Martini, A tingle remarkably pleasant; A yellow, a mellow Martini; I wish I had one at present. There is something about a Martini, Ere the dining and dancing begin, And to tell you the truth, It is not the vermouth-- I think that perhaps it's the gin. - Ogden Nash
  5. Liquor in Montgomery Co. is actually controlled by the county and not the state. I've read it's the only county in the country to do this. The county liquor stores can order some things for you, but a ride up Rt 27 to Howard or Carroll County, or up 270 to Frederick are many liquor stores who can likely get stuff Mont. Co. may not be able to get. If you haven't already seen it, the Mont. Co. stores have weekly liquor and wine specials and often have very good deals (link below). Thanks, Kevin http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Apps/DLC...ts_specials.cfm
  6. It seems no one has already mentioned it, but Uglesich's has closed for the summer. I highly recommend Galatoire's for sunday night if your plans aren't already set in stone. Mandina's is also a great choice as well. Thanks, Kevin
  7. Not sure where in Metro D.C. you are, but most any liquor store should be able to order what you want from their distributor. I'm up here in redneck : ) Carroll County and the local store surprised me by actualy having a bottle of Gosling's Old rum in stock (after I'd ordered it from a different store). The Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star Ed mentioned is very good, and I've seen it many stores. If you don't see it, I'm sure your store can get it. Thanks, Kevin

    To go cups

I feel your pain as another over-regulated citizen of Maryland. I'm not sure about your local liquor ordering (I guess you're Anne Arundel Co.), as I used to order from Corridor Wine (the big store at the B.W. Parkway & Rt 198 in Laurel, which is in Anne Arundel) and they'd get the liquor from a distributor in Baltimore. Maybe it's different for beer than for liquor. People in NOLa don't know how good they have it until they come to Maryland. Though in Charles County (Waldorf) you used to be able to get a cup of ice at the drive through window at the liquor store. Probably no more Thanks, Kevin
  9. For steamed hard crabs, the Maine Ave. Waterfront suggestion above is a good one. The seafood stalls are probably no more than a 10 or 20 minute walk from L'Enfant Plaza metro station, and there's a lot of ready to eat seafood to buy as well. For a more upscale hard crab experience, you could take the metro to Bethesda and go to the Bethesda Crab House down on Bethesda Ave. It's a longer walk than the Maine Ave waterfront would be, but it is a sit-down restaurant, and they have excellent crabs (though more expensive than Maine ave). I am not associated with Ruth's Chris in any way, but am curious about the vehement anti-recommendations against it. While I haven't eaten there in over a year, I've never had a bad steak or bad service. I don't think it compares any less favorably than say The Palm, Sam & Harry's and the like. The next time I do go for a "big-name" steak, it will be at The Old Homestead as it's a smaller chain than Ruth's Chris, and I've never been. I'd be interested to read if there's been really bad food served, or horrible service, to warrant the "avoid at all costs" warning. I mean no disrespect at all to any R.C. naysayers. I myself despise Smith & Wollensky (service both horrible AND indifferent, but great hash browns & pretzel rolls) but know that many love it. Thanks, Kevin
  10. 1 & 2 . Knob Creek (I like this very much and always get it on sale for $17.99). 3. Wild Turkey 101 4. Maker's Mark 5. Bulliet Thanks, Kevin
  11. Though you probably figured this out, the picture in the link is what bevmo uses when they don't have a picture of the actual bottle. Thanks, Kevin
  12. After reading the article, I ordered a bottle of the OLD rum. At $60.00 (yikes) I hope it's as good as the article and the Gosling's website make it out to be. The store I called also can get the GOLD rum, which I'll probably order in a few weeks as it's much less than the OLD. Thanks for the post as I likely never would have known about the OLD rum and wouldn't have seen the GOLD anytime soon. Kevin http://www.blackseal.com/Editions/Oldrum/OldRum_2003.htm
  13. Here is what snopes.com had to say about Two-Buck Chuck. They noted the divorce theory and the airline security theory. Thanks, K http://www.snopes.com/business/market/shawwine.asp
  14. My uncle who lives where there are no Trader Joe's likes the 2 Buck Chuck (okay, now $3.29 in Alexandria, Va) and I bought several bottles for him. Does anyone know why the wine is so cheap? I've heard it has to do with a divorce, and that it's the winery nose-thumbing wine snobs. My uncle likes it and has some wine knowledge, but I've read that the wine stinks. Any thoughts/opinions? Thanks, Kevin
  15. "historic landmark"??? Thanks, Kevin
  16. Not sure of your route as you mentioned Annapolis, but if you're going up I 95 then G & M is indeed a great choice. Probably less than five or ten minutes off of I 95. I have never been disappointed in the almost softball size cake of lump crab with little filler. Some gainsay G & M but it's one of my favorites. Good coleslaw too. Thanks, Kevin
  17. Love the Navy Blackstrap! I drink it both on ice and with cola or ginger beer. Kind of like alcoholic molasses. A stronger taste than the Black Seal (which I also love). I disagree that it should only be used as a floater, but that's why there so many different kinds of rums. Thanks, Kevin
  18. Though it's likely more money than the tiles, you can usually get a good sized pizza stone on ebay for <$20.00 or so. Thanks, Kevin ******************************************************************** yes, I'm cheap and would rather pay $5 for the tiles than $40 for an actual pizza stone. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can go in the area to find these tiles? THANKS!! ********************************************************************
  19. When Washingtonian list Weenie Beenie in its "Cheap Eats" issue, then it will have credibility : ) Thanks, Kevin

    amarone

I thought the line mentioned Chianti and not Amarone. ← Chianti in the movie, Amarone in the book. Thanks, K

  22. It's my understanding that Maryland prohibits shipments that cross county lines, so in effect, they prohibit in state shipments. That is why they will likely still prohibit out of state shipments. Thanks, Kevin
  23. I finally cracked open the bottle of Añejo Especial and liked it very much. It had a strong, but not overpowering aroma and a smooth taste. Some rums (esp Cruzan Single Barrel) have too strong a taste for me, but the Especial was very good, both straight and mixed with a little coca cola. The Añejo Especial was lighter in color, taste and aroma than both the Añejo Reserva and the 7 year old but certainly wasn't lacking in quality. Hopefull I'll get out of the country soon to snag a couple more bottles. Thanks, Kevin
  24. Perhaps I'm too used to the old Diet Coke, but the stuff with Splenda tasted funny (neither funny ha ha, nor funny queer, mmmm hmmmm : ) It had a kind of bitter aftertaste, and a hard to describe drinking tatse. It wasn't as cold as could have been so that may have been a factor. I will give an ice cold one a shot soon. Thanks, Kevin
  25. Was anyone else in line at 9:45? What did you eat? It indeed seems they will stay open in a limited menu capacity which is great as I should get back to NOLA mid-October. Thanks, Kevin
