  1. Interesting news! Does the pizza at Carambola have any similarities to Piasan's?
  2. If I recall correctly, Maggio's is the sole descendent of Piasan's which was on the corner of Verree Road and Bustleton Avenue back in the 1960's to the early 1980's. Piasan's begat Piccolo's on Red Lion Road, home of the "Steak in a Pouch" and continued Piasan's tradition of the swirl of red sauce over the cheese, which you now find at Maggio's along with the steak in a pouch. Many old-school Northeast Philly folk have a fond memory and nostalgic tastebud for Maggio's due to the lineage.
  3. what a beautiful way to shorten your lifespan by a month or two!
  4. Hate to break it to you but Aldo's just might have the worse pizza on the planet. I live in Stoney Ford Estates and can see the restaurant from here. Avalon Cafe is better but still not good. Fact is there is no good pizza around here, we go to Trenton or make our own. ← I think we are talking about two different places. Aldo's Pizzarama is next to George Washington High School on Bustleton Ave. It is not in a class of DeLorenzo's or Tac's or even the best in the city, but it is widely held as "damn good 'za". It was converted in the late 70's from a Hardee's and has ample sit-down space.
  5. thanks for the Hana recommendations ... went there last night with family for someone's birthday dinner and the sushi was excellent: very fresh and well presented... the service was quick and friendly, and overall it was a great meal... the decor is a bit strip-mall-ish, so this is not the romantic hide-away locale. byob was a nice bonus and even though the tab was on the father-in-law, he hapilly stated that this was the cheapest birthday dinner ever.
  6. drive down Bustleton Avenue to Aldo's for an excellent take-out pie.
  7. You can't see it online, but there is also a photo of Shola working his sous vide in the paper-version of the Food section.
  8. Why didn't you go to the Hudson Street one? Much better than Hamilton Avenue, both red and white, not even close. ← it was on a whim and I know how to get to the Hamilton Ave locale... never been to the Hudson one, but read that there are fewer seats and I figured it was not worth the hassle since I had to be in Newtown by 7:15. I will be sure to go to the Hudson locale (on a weeknight.)
  9. all this talk of DeLorenzo's had me salivating, and a Saturday night middle-school play in Newtown was the perfect excuse for a trip to Trenton (they make, I take...). Even at 5:15 PM , there was a 15 minute wait for a table (Hamilton locale), but the 'za was excellent as usual. Their white pizza does not top Tacconelli's but their red pie is as good as it gets... Definitely belongs on the "last meal list"
  10. Talk of the Town is just north of Packer Ave, 6 or so blocks south of Snyder. You can easily walk there from the arena parking lot. ← jmbrightman is correct. I meant Packer not Snyder.
  11. Walk about 5 mins up Broad just past Snyder: Talk of the Town has one of the city's best cheesteaks (flipped, not chopped...in the style of Steve's Prince of Steaks).
  12. Sacrilege! Yuengling at Delorenzo's is meant to be drank straight from the bottle! ← It is sacrilege to drink decent beer out of a bottle; good beer deserves a glass whenever possible. Yuengling Lager or Chesterfield Ale, both superb partners with pizza, are such beers. ← If my memory serves me, given the red plastic "glasses" at said pizza mecca, the closest thing to actual glass is the bottle... now then, if you are tlking BYOG, pour me in!
  13. Sacrilege! Yuengling at Delorenzo's is meant to be drank straight from the bottle!
  14. Haven't been there but someone was raving about the place last night... "best sushi in Philadelphia" was her statement...
  15. You can never go wrong with Magic Hat #9 on tap... and no smoking!
  16. Lemongrass on Lancaster Ave. at 37th street is also a great option if you have a car. They have a price fixe menu with 3 courses and everything I have had there was great.
  17. Drove by Zeke's this morning and talked to a guy waiting outside (he appeared to be working there) for them to open. He said they have cleaned the place up, that they will be opening next week, and that I should tell everyone. From the outside, I could see that they have new menu boards hanging up, and the place appears very clean. I'm ready for some good BBQ!
  18. Went to Johnnie's today... luckily I did not require a chili-colored shirt and there were about 10 kids who were metabolizing milkshakes by yelling and using the limited available floor space for sprinting. Dogs were very good though, although mid-day pre-holiday parking in Wayne was an interesting experience.
  19. Yes, aside from a "lunchy" crowd, I was wondering if they had enough tables to seat people for walk-in... however, any dress code tips or proper vernacular are always appreciated!
  20. I was planning on meeting a friend at Johnnie's and could not tell from their web site if it is eat-in or just take-out. If it is eat-in, what is the lunch crowd like?
  21. there is a Bonefish Grille on 611 just off the PA Tpk. It has been discussed in the NJ forums...
  22. I tried to search the thread, but leave it to me to find a wine with 4 words 4 or less characters. Anyway, I had a bottle of Dyed in the Wool Pinot this summer and just purchased a case for the holidays. If you haven't tried this and like a nice smooth Pinot, give it a shot. If you have had Dyed in the Wool, what did you think?
  23. Thanks for the good news, as it is like the perfect present for the holidays. Tell Zeke the faithful are waiting and ready to support him!
  24. Driving up Lancaster Ave. last night, I happened to pass Zeke's, and there were holiday lights up and the hand-written "closed" sign on the door was gone. The phone number is still out of service, so if anyone drives past during the day, please report back any signs of life or activity.

    Bagels

I live near Delancey Street Bagels, but prefer NY bagels on City Ave/Haverford Ave in the strip mall behind the McDonalds (7549 Haverford Avenue 215-878-8080). I do not think they are "boiled" but IMHO they are the best in the area, and the bialis are excellent (closed Saturdays).
