Has anyone else been to Teresa's Next Door in Wayne? It is, literally, next door to Teresa's on Wayne Ave and has an impressive selection of Belgian ales as well as other beers (and wines). I can't speak much to the menu, as I had only mussels (good but not Standard Tap "GOOD") and a Cuban sandwich (along with a Piraat Ale and a German Köstritzer Schwarzbier). Living in the 'Burbs, it is great to have a place along the lines of Monks, without the parking, smoking, and waiting.

Scottsdale / Sedona Dining Recommendations
phungi replied to a topic in Southwest & Western States: Dining
I am going to Scottsdale next week for a conference, staying at the Westin Kierland... are any of these places within walking distance? How far is Phoenix from Scottsdale? -
Love (as in Love LOVE LOVE) the Huevos Rancheros for brunch at El Vez. Sushi at Pod is reasonable, esp for lunch (compared to other dishes). Buddakan has always been good to me - great food but pricey and often really noisy.

Went to Mayuree Cafe in Devon this weekend... was surprised to find no eGullet mention, so here goes: They recently relocated to a strip of stores by Devon Lanes, in the locale previously held by a breakfast/lunch diner (if I recall correctly). The owner and his wife run the place, and the owner appeared to be the sole waiter. There was a bit of a wait, and it was somewhat slow, but I read this going in, brought ample spirits, and there were no extended waits that made things feel slow. We ordered 3 apps: shrimp toast (excellent), spring rolls (with banana since they were out of mango - more of a dessert than an appy) and satay (tasty but nothing more or less than you would expect.) The 4 plates we ordered were panang chicken (excellent red curry sauce), pad thai (I don't usually like pad thai, but this was absolutely delicious), a shrimp fried rice (best fried rice I ever had), and some other dish that I cannot recall, but was somewhat redundant with another dish we ordered. Everything was delicious, and the bill was about $80 plus. Other than the somewhat awkward nature of the owner/host/waiter, it was great, and I will definitely be going back. Curious if anyone has been, and what their impression is... other boards say nice things and also talk about the quirky owner.

As the OP, I was asking where one could go for a meatball sandwich (with good texture, tasty sauce, and a good roll), and posted a few of my favs out of the area. I know the meatball sandwich is not a culinary Everest, but the fun of eGullet discussions is learning where others go and where others recommend you go. I appreciate the suggestions for places I have not yet visited, and do not understand the "DIY" tone or direction. If this is turning into a make at home thread, so be it... however, short of an invite or recipe, DIY posts leave me nothing to eat by way of actual meatball sandwiches.

never thought of John's for a meatball... (h)mmmm....

I am forever in search of the great meatball sandwich. I like good homemade meatballs, not too firm, softened from cooking in tasty sauce, and on a great roll. The cheese can either be on the roll or baked on top, Thus far, the best I have had is at White House Subs in Atlantic City. The homemade meatballs almost crumble from the sauce and pressure of the bite, but a hard/half meatball never falls out of the roll... oh, the magnificent Jersey shore roll. Sacko's in Ventnor is a close second. In the Philly suburbs, the best I have had is at Rittenhouse Deli in Armore... homemade meatballs, great sauce and consistency, but not quite "the best" and not in the same league as White House and Sackos. Dakota Pizza in Wynnewood has a good meatball parm, with meatballs on the firmer side... the center of the meatball is sometimes too firm and not softened by the sauce... the roll sometimes is too firm/crispy, but a decent sandwich. Where in the Philly area do the eGulleters point me for that elusive "great" meatball sandwich?

Never had a bad meal at Buddakhan.. in fact, every time I've been there, it has been superb.

Nice pics... I almost thought I was in an archived FoodKitchen thread!

I recently read the article, and saw that although there was an initial dip in customers/traffic, things returned to normal shortly thereafter. I cannot imagine why Plotkin would want to pursue this... if the ruling is against him, there will not only be legal costs, but likely a 2nd dip in traffic. Ego defense can be very costly...

There is also a Tony Luke's at the "food court" at the Borgata Casino, and they appeared to be the busiest merchant the 2 times I was down there. The Roast Pork was as good as Oregon AVe and the cheesesteak comsumed by my friend looked the same and was reported to be very good. While I would prefer to take the extra minutes to drive to White House, TLs will get a LOT of casino traffic and likely make a fortune. Opening in high-profile/traffic locales (i.e, casino, stadium, RTM) appears to be a great move for the franchise, perhaps in response to isolated drive-up locales that appear not to have panned out.

I tried the mango, cherry, and chocolate (with real chips)... all very good.

Stopped by Just Chill yesterday with the kids after camp, on Manoa off Haverford (Near City Ave and Haverford) and was pleasantly surprised. Prices were cheaper and the water ice had more flavor than Rita's. Mango was excellent, the chocolate had chips, and the cherry was really good. Talked to the owner, and all is made in-house. Plus, it is indoor with seating, which is always nice on a 95-degree day. They opened only a week ago, so stop in if you get a chance. Living in Wynnewood we only had Rita's on Eagle Road or City Ave, so this is a great addition to the area. (No affiliation with the store of relationship with the owners)

I didn't even think of Fork, and it is one of my favorite places!

A colleague is planning a rehearsal dinner in June 2008 and is interested in Old City locales. A Thursday night, open bar or beer/wine, either a private room or an entire place. They have looked into Patuo, Spasso, and Lamberti's Cucina, but I offered to toss it out there to the eGulleters for ideas.

Not "served" but I bought some tonight at, of all places, Genuardi's in Wynnewood, on sale for $9.99/lb. First time I had Cooper River Salmon, and it was much better than "regular".
-
Definitely not limited to sushi, but those were the closest listings. By the way, the title should be "near" not "new"...

I'm going to Comedy Sportz on Saturday and have been given the task of finding suitable eats. A Google Maps search turned up 3 sushi places: Sansom Street Sushi Maki Rocks Fuji Mountain Any recommendations or other options nearby?

John's Roast Pork?
-
In a previous thread, Bob recommended Pig Daddy's after Zeke's closed down. I finally made it there today, and they make one fine pulled pork sandwich. The owners are very nice folks, which never hurts the "experience". Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely be stopping back again!

Wine & Spirits Bargains at the PLCB (Part 2)
phungi replied to a topic in Pennsylvania: Cooking & Baking
Yes, Pa does. Giving stores the pricing flexibility that would allow managers to do that sort of thing was one goal Chairman Newman talked about often. Current Regime strikes me as having no such priorities. Though admittedly we still know very little about them. ← Thanks for the info... hard to see how this translates into anything but monopoly-rent-revenue for the State, esp. when you can get the same (read: exact) wine in neighboring states for less per-bottle and with a 10% case discount. -
Wine & Spirits Bargains at the PLCB (Part 2)
phungi replied to a topic in Pennsylvania: Cooking & Baking
I always purchase cases of wine while in NJ or DE, but was at the Narberth store yesterday and they had Dyed in the Wool Pinot Noir in stock (one of my personal favorites, and one of the better sub-$15 Pinots out there). The price was $13.99 a bottle and when I asked about the price per case, I was told "$13.99 times 12". Aside from what appeared to be a snappy asnwer to a stupid question, does PA have a rule against case discounts? For the $28 discount, it was worth waiting... -
No since every time I've gone there I get the all you can eat deal. I might rethink this approach in light of what you've just mentioned though. There is a bit of a language barrier with some of the servers there. That is to say I speak zero Portugese and they speak little English. I suppose I might have a word with one of the guys that I remembered spoke English pretty well and tell him my preference and ask if it would be possible to get rarer meats. ← I prefer medium, and always ask for the "outer" or "crust" portions, and am always happy with the cut... then again, I always walk up to the "counter" so I am not sure if the same process works for AYCE served table-side.

Helped the parents unpack the car after 3 months in West Palm and was rewarded with a trip to White House in AC. Remembered to share a photo after wolfing down 1/2 a CS hoagie with fried onions and hot peppers. Cell-phone image quality does not do this masterpiece justice. IMHO: Definitely the best cheesesteak around...

Agreed, although how much salad does one want to eat at what amounts to an AYCE meateria? The tomato/onion/herb salad is very good, and the black beans over rice are also quite tasty. The salad bar rotates hot dishes as well, usually of undiscernable meat origin, but I never have more than a 1/2 plate before tackling the meats...
