Based on my several visits to Rebecca's, it's definitely a first class place. I don't think we're known there, and didn't receive any special treatment, as far as I could tell. For those who didn't see the original review: http://www.bergen.com/dineout/dineout22001123012.htm

That sounds like an excellent recipe. It gives me a sense of how home cooks in the South must have mastered time management to cook 30-40 pieces of chicken, each one perfect...

FWIW, Mr Latte has now been elevated to the "boyfriend" as of last Sunday's Magazine. Previous episodes have dwelt on his increasing food sophistication
-
"waitstaff" is often used by persons of the left persuasion to describe persons who assist at the table I don't know if that means the person for whom the diner waits to take an order, or the person on staff who waits on the wishes of the diner

David's in West Caldwell (555 Passaic Ave) has excellent kosher deli. Next to the Bank of NY.

4302 votes so far, moving up nicely. Please continue to vote early and often. There's a cluster of sites which can be demolished quickly, which will put eGullet at 41 Rosie's increasing her lead in the 11 position. -
Good luck on your jaunt! Be sure to report back on your discoveries. Rosie - This sounds like the place just south of the Holland Tunnel and north of Newport Center Mall. I often see people with wheeled bag carriers boarding PATH at Pavonia, brimming with food and merchandise.

Plugra is also very good. I believe it's made by Hotel Bar/Keller's. Kings and Shop Rite carry it for ŭ a pound. 85% butterfat, compared to the usual 80-82% IIRC

Steve Plotnicki - OK, I give you credit for a statement you made last week in the steak thread. I stole it from you and used it in a comment I posted in September of 2001. So. There! You said it first. Paul

Steve - you raise an interesting issue with your comment about chocolate makers lacking the verve and spirit to make interesting and risky chocolates. Micro-brewing seems to be driven in part by the search for unusual and new interpretations of grain and liquids as well as the customer's acceptance of a price perhaps 2x a typical commodity beer price. Bud is ű.99 a case on sale, Catamount is ฤ, Ramstein is ว. Is there a similar need for chocolate lovers to seek out unique flavors and interpretations? Paul

nothing beats a yuengling porter... They're building a new and improved brewery just outside of Pottsville, scheduled to be opened for full use in June, IIRC. The beer is widely available in NJ

California Pizza Kitchen for good, high quality ingredients and fresh preparation even their airport locations have open kitchens, fresh produce, etc. (Perhaps we should open a thread about fast food dining in airports?)

Twenty Eight in Montclair gets VERY loud. Great people watching, though. Tre Piani in Madison (the former Three Central) is good, with several large tables. Not in the same league as Scalini or Il Mondo Vecchio, but less than half the price. I like Liberte in Montclair. Nice, French country house atmosphere set adjacent to a garden waterfall (probably turned off, now). Not loud. You might want to try out a few of these places (perhaps as a couple) and see how you feel about them.

Interesting reports. We dined at Mohave in mid-November, similar experience (good steaks, well prepared, dining room absolutely empty at 7pm). Pints of Bass Ale went well. Blue Sky seems to have hit a rough spot. We were there before Christmas, didn't have the sense we were guests, more like we were keeping the staff from doing something they wanted to do. Food was fine, courses were delivered in a timely fashion. I'd contrast that to Deja-Vu, across the street, or Liberte, where there's a more hospitable atmosphere. Best wishes on your baby, get those meals in now...

I'll plead guilty. Dee and I were cajoled into watching a nine year old niece and her friend for a weekend. They demanded to go to an OG. We went to the place on NJ 3 just east of the Giants Stadium. I found the food to be generally bland, and more expensive than I anticipated. My guess is you'd be better off picking any NJ Italian storefront out of the yellow pages and walking in. Kids loved it, had a great time. The restaurant had a magician at Saturday lunch, organ grinder music. Didn't see Uncle Nick, though. FWIW, the Best Buys located just east of this store is in a NJ special tax zone. Sales Tax is 3% on video, sound, TV, etc. Home Depot is in the same zone.

Tommy - where's the Harold's NY in Lyndhurst? I know of the location in Parsippany, but Lyndhurst would be a big plus Thanks Paul

now at 52nd place...on a roll! there's a need for 500 votes to move to position 51, 300 subsequent votes will move egullet to position 46. Rosie's got a shot at moving to position 10, so put a vote there, too VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN!!! -
Rutt's Hutt is just over the border in Clifton. I think River Road goes right past it. Great hot dogs, very 1950s (real 1950s, not imagined) atmosphere. Village Gourmet in Rutherford is only a few minutes away. Moving up the ladder, Cafe Matisse in Rutherford, Park & Orchard in East Rutherford are also within 10 minutes.

Well, they couldn't say it on TV if it wasn't true. And, all the people on the commercial are smiling as they eat. Momma, Nonna, Uncle Nick... So, it must be true.

eGullet is now 56 on this list. With just over 100 new votes, it will move to position 52! Then there's a huge jump of several hundred votes to the next cluster (51-45), so remember - VOTE EARLY and VOTE OFTEN -
David Corcoran reviewed it, gave it a very good: third step down from nirvana, fifth step up from ptomaine dregs. Loved the Shanghai casserole (pork, scallops, cellophane noodles, fish balls and nappa cabbage), seaweed dipped flounder, tiny snails, tripe, vegetable chow fun. Corcoran comments that some items are standard Chinese fare, no better, no worse. Other items are sublime. Liked the Beijing duck, too. The guy sounds like he enjoys eating, and knows what he's talking about...

Back when the joint was known as the Lighthouse, you entered thru the very smoky bar, and walked to the dining room, which was built on a porch with a drop dead SE view of the river and the city. If your table wasn't ready, you waited in the bar. Back then it was a very small dining room, perhaps 10-12 tables. I vaguely recall the restaurant was Portuguese. I didn't recall an upstairs room, perhaps there wasn't one back then.
