  1. I love waffles and do make them occasionally, but they're more of a sweet treat. My vote will have to go for French Toast. It's something that can be thrown together quickly and it's so substantial and satisfying. I love it with crusty french bread, and cooked on high heat so it's moist yet browns beautifully (I'll usually brown my butter first too). Served with either fruit syrup or maple syrup. It's the perfect brunch on a rainy weekend.

I've never been particularly fond of pancakes. I'll eat them if that's all there is, but they're definitely a distant third.

  2. When I DO wash stuff by hand, I can "forget" to remove it from the drying rack and put it away. Seriously, I probably fetch half the things I need to cook and bake from the drying rack or the dishwasher.

Heh. All the dishes in my kitchen are currently clean, yet I have a huuuuuuge pile of dishes sitting next to the sink waiting to be put away. Looks like I haven't washed any dishes for weeks. So I'm always digging through the clean pile looking for what I need.

  3. Now, my bad habit is a little strange. First, I have to say, I clean as I go along usually. I wash dishes at stopping points, and during big cooking, I keep a pan of soapy water to wash certain things that I use a lot. Like, I've cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner with one bowl. I'm very tidy and efficient, in that regard...

But my horrible habit comes in when I'm prepping vegetables or fruit. I just shove the trimmings, cores, and peels off the back or sides of the cutting board. I'll peel carrots or potatoes right on the counter. During a big cooking session, or making a salad, it looks like I'm working in the center of a compost heap. I clean it all up very well, after, but when I'm on a tear, I just shove stuff around.

Ditto to all of that. I wash up my dishes as I go so I don't have a big pile to wash at the end. But like you, I just shove all my peelings and cores off to the side of the cutting board. But it's all clean, right? So no problem. Right?

Oh, and Anna, I do the thing with the broom too. But not just in the kitchen.

  4. I used to be much more into drinking tea. I'm not sure why, but I drifted away from it for a few years and am just now getting back into it again. I'm not sure it'll be to the extent that I used to be (with at least 20 different varieties of tea onhand at any given time), but I'm starting off with my old favourites – mint, chamomille, earl grey, and pearl jasmine.

  5. At the last place I worked, there were several of us who would have tea in the afternoon. There we'd make a full pot in the office brown betty, water heated with a proper kettle, and then kept warm with a cozy. Still, it was just made with tea bags.

  6. My office has a supply of different Tazo tea bags in the kitchen, but I prefer to bring in my own Forté bags which have a nicer tea and more room for the leaves to unfurl. It's still not as good as loose leaf, but it's much more convenient for at work.

I do have a strainer that will sit in a mug for brewing loose leaf, but when I'm at work I tend to get busy and forget my tea so it goes cold. Therefore, I tend to brew it in my thermos tumbler, but with the lid off so it's not overly hot. Anyway, my tumbler is too deep for the strainer to work. So until I can find a nice mug with a lid, I'll keep using the bags.

Oh, and edited to add that I just use hot water from the dispenser on our coffee maker.

  7. Now, is it a smoothie without fruit? Because one of my favorite breakfast blender concoctions involves frozen coffee cubes, soy or regular milk, and chocolate whey powder... It's this lovely creamy mocha protein bomb.

I would just like to say "yum".

  8. I'm a big breakfast smoothie fan, especially in the summer. I try to have one every day.

If you like a thick smoothie (like millkshake thick), then you must freeze your fruit, especially the bananas. And it you freeze your fruit, you don't have to add ice cubes (as has been mentioned upthread already).

I always have some bananas ripening on my counter. When they hit perfect ripeness, I peel, break them into small pieces and freeze them in freezer bags. I always have a selection of other fruits in the freezer as well – strawberries, blueberries, peaches, cranberries. I'll also freeze coconut milk in silicone muffin liners (ice cube tray should work too) and bag them so it's all ready to go. Plus I have at least a couple different kinds of juices as well as some soy milk (which I don't always use, but it's a good source of protein in the morning).

I always start with banana, and then mix it up from there. Today I had banana, strawberry, cranberry, coconut milk, soy milk & orange juice. One of my favourites is banana, strawberry, coconut milk, soy milk, pineapple juice and nutmeg. The simplest one I make is probably banana, strawberry and orange juice. I've had one at a local smoothie bar that I really like, although I haven't tried it yet myself – it contains papaya, almonds and dates (can't remember the other ingredients offhand).

My blender is a waring pro. I used to have a kitchenaid but my smoothies were always lumpy, so I gave it away and bought the waring. Love it.

  9. Hey guys. Does anyone have access to their book right now? I'm thinking of making the coconut tea cake tonight and I'll need to pick up a few things on my way home. Does the recipe call for whole milk? Other than the coconut milk and the basics (like flour, sugar, butter, etc), are there any other ingredients?

    thanks!

Many of the recipes can be found online. I left my book in Canada, so online searching is the only way I can get most of the recipe!

    You rock, thanks!!

  11. This cookbook was an impulse purchase recently, based on the enthusiasm of its eG fans.  I'm looking forward to reading thru this entire thread, but for now let me just say that I am addicted to the French Yogurt Cake recipe.  Addicted, really. I made it the first time to use up some leftover yogurt and now there's no going back.

Mmm, that sounds good. I have to admit that I keep returning to the same recipes again and again (they're just so GOOD). I was going to make either the mocha swirl bundt or the coconut tea cake again this weekend, but maybe it's time to try something new...

  12. I don't know what happened with my pvr (or maybe my brain) but I missed the finale.

I know I'm going against popular opinion, but I actually like Hosea. Did NOT think he had much chance of actually winning though. Given the final three, I'm happy that he won. Carla bugs me and Stefan is too cocky.

  13. I'll say it again – train wreck. I find it hard to believe that any of these people will ever be able to find work again after the way they're portrayed on this show.

And I felt so badly for Robert the other week when he got jerked around on the ferry ride, and then some of the comments he came out with tonight made me want to smack him. I can't stand Lacey, but that's based on her whiny attitude and her total lack of skills. Where does Robert, who is so large he wasn't even allowed to fly on a helicopter, get off making cracks about Lacey's weight? What an ass.
