  1. I'll grant that Slow Food doesn't hurt anything. SB (thinks a new name would help)
  2. Now THAT is MY Tony!
  3. The Day of Saint John the Baptist is, of course, the Church's sanctioned substitute for the ancient pagan celebration of Midsummer Night. Midsummer Night and it's ancient customs were, of course, the subject of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. The Play contains some interesting food related advice in Act 4, Scene 2, where Bottom instructs the actors: " And, most dear actors, eat no onions nor garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath; and I do not doubt but to hear them say, it is a sweet comedy." SB (loves Mickey Rooney as Puck in the 1934 Hollywood film version)

Did we ever have a thread on Hippie Food? I don't mean hash brownies, tubs of ice cream or cold pizza, but the normal everyday fare of a distinct nature served up in communal settings Having visited many such places in my work as a financier of marijuana smuggling and distribution operations, I can recall: Hippies In General: Brown Rice Granola Dahl At a Specific Locale: Homemade Ravioli Homemade Ice Cream SB (Peace)
  5. To say nothing of the fact that Granny Smith had been to South Africa long enough ago to have planted a producing apple tree! SB
  6. Around here the guys used to stick Chiquita Banana labels on their lunch pail until it was totally covered up. SB
  7. After using my KA for bread making about once a week on average over the past fifteen years, I've concluded there is no single easy way to tell when dough has been properly kneaded, ie: cleans sides of bowl, climbs dough hook etc. I measure flour by weight and start with the minimum quantity called for in the recipe. Then I add more in small amounts until it looks and feels "right". Sometimes I finish kneading by hand, sometimes I don't. SB (interested in the new hook design)
  8. No offense taken, I'm just surprised to see so much criticism directed at the KitchenAid. Perhaps some of you are expecting too much? The KA mixer isn't meant for professional users. It's just a tool that does what it can. For most home bakers it's perfectly sufficient, especially with a few tricks and recipe adaptations like some posters have mentioned. Or maybe the quality has suffered since I got mine fifteen years ago? SB (was suspicious when they started offering designer colors)
  9. I was anxious to read some Korean food blogs after watching Tony Bourdain (and Nari) in Korea. What a sad coincidence that something like this would happen? SB
  10. Do they sell gored oxtail? SB
  11. Reasonable people can indeed disagree, and as long as they "put their money where their mouth is" I'm willing to consider their arguments and render my own decision. But, I wonder if the NYT offers more favorable advertising rates to smaller, socially conscious, family-style businesses, food related or otherwise, than they do do the corporate behemoths? SB (it always comes down to whose ox is being gored)
  12. jeez......this reminds me. My boyfriend said and I quote "you are more annoying about Korea than this girl" what's wrong with being "overly" passionate about your heritage/food? come on now. In the 2nd to last scene when they were having sam gyup sal/various gogi bbq, I agreed with her 100% when she said she was the most happiest as she was dipping her chile pepper in go chu jang I am so glad I am visiting my Korean mother in July ← Why don't you consider doing a mini-food blog while you're over there? SB (likes annoying Korean girls)
  13. I suspect the people familiar with every country featured on Tony's show have similar complaints. There's only so much you can fit into an hour program. This particular episode seems to have generated more interest than most due to Nari's personality. I know I have shamefully little knowledge of Korean food and culture, and I've become interested enough to want to learn more. Fomenting an interest in other cultures through food is the show's premise afterall. SB (would definitely buy a cd of the outtakes!)
  14. Something between them? Avuncular, I'm sure. ← How could anyone not have smiled so much? SB
  15. Choppys Pizza in Chisholm has long been known for its breaded pork sandwiches. SB (really cheap too!)
  16. On the show's Travel Channel Discussion Board there's some anti-Nari sentiment being expressed by, oddly enough, people who at least claim to be Korean? SB (suspects it's a case of sour grapes)(or, maybe sour cabbage?)
  17. I think the show's producers may have unwittingly hit upon something here. Nari's cheerful demeanor makes her the perfect foil for Tony's off-handed cynical countenance, which sometimes wears a bit thin. I'll bet if she had accompanied him on the visit to Iceland that episode would have turned out completely different? I especially like her remark about, "remember, no reservations" to a somewhat leary Bourdain during the show. How does "The Tony & Nari Show: With and Without Reservations" sound. Or, hell, just "The Nari Show"! SB (smitten)
  18. Now....the Korean episode was one of the best yet! Of course. Nari is cutern' hell. SB
  19. To keep on topic, it was Gouda/Rijsttafel 1 - Burek/Ajvar 0. Robben consumes all. ← Thanks! The only Dutch product I have on hand is some salty licorice. SB (has a Serb Cousin who's married to a Dutch guy)
  20. Miracle Whip was introduced at the 1933 Worlds Fair.
  21. Did Serbia beat The Netherlands? SB (trying to decide what to eat)
  22. You just reminded me of: Welch's Howdy Doody jelly jar tumblers! SB (there must be some for sale on eBay?)(YES!)
  23. Ehere are a lot of meat markets around Virginia, none too far off the highway. F&D Meats has always had a good reputation, and Pauls pretty well known. I'll ask about the Kosher Sausage Kitchen, (a customer of mine is a supermarket butcher in Virginia), because Kosher isn't exactly a big deal up here so it has to be an interesting story. I'd have to say that if you're coming up through Cloquet The Swamp Sisters Shop in Saginaw might be worth while to check out. It wouldn't be too far out of your way. I don't know about their meat, but I'll bet they have cute t-shirts? SB (doesn't get over that way very often)
  24. We're an "inclusive" group. Lots of Harleys and BMW plus my ol' Suzi sidecar rig. ← Well, if we're gonna have Harleys, I'd bring some beer. SB
  25. Getta Porketta. Fraboni's is a good brand. SB (available at any Range supermarket)
