  1. Not far, but my understanding is that the Fulton Fish Market will be re-locating to the Bronx. I would ideally like a place in Manhattan, but will consider something outside if it's worth it. The other question is whether you need to place a minimum order that might be a little bit too big for an individual to buy something in a market like Fulton. Here's a link to a recent NY Times article talking about the move: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/23/dining/23fult.html?
  2. Any thoughts on where to buy fish to make sushi at home? Someone had told me about "buying groups" of home cooks that will get together and buy straight from distributors. Anyone heard of this?
  3. Milla makes a good point about Michelin frowning upon multi-establishment chefs. It has been tough enough for Ducasse to manage his restaurants in France for them to award three stars to ADNY right away. I would not be surprised if they eventually got 3 stars though. If there is indeed one 3-star restaurant, I am going to have to go with Per Se. (in spite of Keller not being here that often). While FL is considered by many the best in the country and among the top in the world, you don't hear that about ADNY.
  4. If it's a quesadilla, it has to have cheese. In Mexico you will never hear someone say "Quesadilla de queso". That it has cheese is always implied in "quesadilla" but it can have other things in it as well. As for my favorite type, it's with cheese only, but once it's melted, they would open the quesadilla and grill the cheese on the "comal", making it crispy, then fold it back together.
  5. Same here... went there on Saturday, they told me they were still doing "kitchen tests" and serving people by invitation only. Mere mortals have to wait...

    V Steakhouse

I would be surprised to see it close down. Even if it's not a big money maker, I think it would hurt the Jean Georges' family of restaurants to have one close down, especially after such a short run. I am curious to see how they plan on changing the menu, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually moved AWAY from being a steakhouse, and try to sell themselves as another "high quality" Jean Georges restaurant.
  7. @SQC also carries a chili hot chocolate with chipotle and cinnamon
  8. La Merced huh? Make sure to pack some heat... Another place you should check out is Los Almendros. This is for food typical of Yucatan, try the Lima Soup, Pollo Oriental and the pheasant.
  9. Tezca and Aguila y Sol are definetly two places to check out (neither of them very cheap). I have to agree on the Hacienda de los Morales, way overrated, nice place but so-so food. I would much rather recommend San Angel Inn. Fonda Don Chon is excellent, but it's most certainly bordering on the "exotic". You'll be eating things like bear, lion, armadillo, worms. I would be careful about the street food. For tacos, El Tizoncito or El Charco de las Ranas is worth going to. For other "street food" I would also recommend Maria Isabel (tostadas, sopes, etc).
  10. Surprised to see that nobody has mentioned Valentina sauce from Mexico. It's probably the most commonly used hot sauce in Mexico. Has not really made it to the mainstream in the US, and is not as easy to find as some of the other sauces. You can find it at mexgrocer.com
