  1. forget restaurants. cook for your lady friends. they are worth it.
  2. Everybody you mentioned except Bobby is rapidly phasing out of the Food Network. Their main draws now are Paula Dean and her sons, Rachel Ray, Guy, Sandra Lee, etc. true. but you said people with their backgrounds wouldn't have the personality to pull off their own shows. every single one of them not only had their own show (s) but also, put the network on the map. guy fierri, is the lone example of the next food network star that even has a show. sorry, this show is a freakin embarassment.
  3. five guys fries are really good.
  4. According to your definition every contestant would have to be a graduate of a high end culinary school, have years of experience and be an executive chef. These people might be able to cook but probably wouldn't have the personality that makes a show successful! ← sorry i just don't agree. what about bobby flay, emeril, mario batali, and alton brown? they went to culinary school and/or are exec chef's. they certainly can pull off their own shows. christ, emeril put this network on the map! and no, that isn't my definition of who should win. i never went to culinary school ,nor worked in a professional kitchen, but i do know how to make a decent chicken stew. i also wouldn't freak out if some one gave me a whole fish to prepare for dinner.let alone throw it in the trash. if you weren't at least taken aback by this complete lack of professionalism or respect for your food source, then i just don't know what to say.i know and am comfortable with the fact our food was once alive and didn't grow on a tree wrapped in a cellphane package.
  5. how many people did they feed at that final challenge table? 10 or 12? does anyone think lisa's one duck leg confit would have changed the flavor of their dish? that would be, what, a 1/2 a forkful at most for each dish.
  6. I certainly don't believe a good Food Network Star has to be into "The French Food Thing" as you call it. Matter of fact it's refreshing to see that some of them are not into it! ← i didn't say that, the contestant did. btw, i didn't lay out a definition. not sure where you got that from. but yeah, maybe i'm weird but, someone who they want to be a food authority, which is exactly what the stuffed shirt guy said, should know what coq au vin is and how to cook it. they don't have to like french food, but they should certainly be knowledgeable about the classic dishes. how do they beat the one contestant up for not knowing an udon noodle, but give someone a pass for not knowing what coq au vin is?
  7. Offended? That's the best advice he could've gotten -- otherwise, he would've been gone. He's stiff as a board because he isn't being himself, and if he isn't himself, he isn't going to be able to be personable or engaging. ← fair enough. what i just can not fathom is the executives letting their viewers see that they are okay with the next "food network star" possiblely being someone who: "...isn't into the french food thing" and called coq au vin "coq de vin"; a contestant, who by their admission, has only cooked one thing they liked so far; someone who the judges said "needs to become a food authority" (like that can happen in a week) ; someone who freaked when presented with a whole fish, and on and on.... yeah some of them have been bounced, but they were actually in the running to be the next FOOD network star. unbelievable!
  8. was anyone else a little bothered by the judges criticism of the african american gentleman? sorry, i can't remember his name. the fn lady was saying something like, " you just need to be yourself" "your not letting us see the real you, that's as honest as i can be." ummm, no it's not......... they obviously want him to be "black" or ghetto or whatever... it was obvious he picked up on this because his response was to give them some of what they wanted to hear. then all the judges cracked up. i mean, if mario batali was a contestant (god forbid) on this train wreck, and he wasn't being italian enough, you know they'd reccomend he throw in some ,"mangia mangia's" and some "boun appetito's". "c'mon mario be italian!!" i guess i wasn't overly offended by this, but it did bother me. this only the second episode of this season i have seen. except for maybe a couple of the contestants, these people can't cook.period.
  9. As info, there is another cheesesteak vendor. Spataro's has been making them since they moved to their new center court location. Anyone tried them yet? ← i had one shortly after they opened. i think i posted about it somewhere. it was pretty average. the only steak of ricks i ever had was at the ball park. i just couldn't wait in that ridiculous line at tony luke's. you know what? i thought it was pretty damn good. way better than my spataro's experience.
  10. not sure when you will be visiting, but the $45 tm is only monday-thursday. (i think)
  11. not sure i completely understand what your looking for but.... if money is no object and you want to eat in teh city, i would reccomend marcels. french cuisine, nice ambience, excellent service, very good wine list.
  12. i still maintain that talk of the town, down by the stadiums, make one of the best cheesesteaks in philly. they kind of fly under the radar, prehaps becuase of the location.
  13. i ate at pazo last summer and loved it. cool space, you can do small plates and the wine list was pretty good. i'd reccomend it assumed nothing has happened since last summer. (chef turnover, change of focus, etc)
  14. not in philadelphia, but my only trip to white house in atlantic city was by far the best sub i've ever eaten.
  15. i guess i just disagree. i've had good and very good prepared foods in many cities, but never great. the best sandwich in philly is, imho, either dinics or tony luke's roast pork. i would put them in the great catagory for sandwiches. but at the same time i doubt they travel well. best consummed on site.
  16. is isgro's really considered one of philly's best bakeries? as for dibruno's, prepared food sitting around waiting to be bought is rarely memorable no matter who is preparing it. i think of dibruno as a philly best for cheese, and imported meats.
  17. Actually, it sounds good! So good that in fact I think I'm gonna have some really soon. Maybe even tomorrow. Thanks, Katie. ← sparkling lambrusco is suprisingly good also.
  18. you would be fine to chill your bojo slightly. zins and bar b q is great. zin and summer heat not so great. you could find cru beaujolais for 10 or under wholsale, these would have a bit more complexity and maybe won't be as fruit forward as beaujolais or beaujolais village.
  19. rose is a great idea. there are plenty of liter sized bottles of decent reisling, gruner veltliner, and muller thurgau. look for some that carry the terry thiese selection label. for reds i'd look for some 2006 or 2007 beaujolais or beaujolais villages.
  20. i loved fish on right after it opened. which was summer 2005? maybe 2004. recent visits have been so so. they dumbed down the wine list just like striper bites did. it's okay, but i wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.
  21. This is only true on Sunday afternoons, right? Other times one has to get down to the 9th street storefront, right? (And it's actually Taquitos de Puebla...) or are we talking about different things? ← if you are referring to the taqueria set up at the headhouse square market, yeah, it's only sunday from about 11:00 am to ? It is damn good though. I had a quesidilla pollo, and taco pastor with a mexican soda two sundays ago that was practically life affirming.
  22. he said it. i heard it too. i want to party with that guy.
  23. i watched last night. this year's group just weren't as likeable as last seasons. so the reunion show was kinda flat for me. some obseravtions: i get the distinct impression this crowd really didn't like each other that much. i still think andrew is probably a better chef than he was able to show. i don't necessarily agree with tom c's estimation that this was the most talented crew yet. there were alot of misses this year and the meals presented at this season's finale looked pretty average. i'd take hung, dale, and can't remember her name right now, over richard, lisa, stephanie.
  24. i've eaten at most places in lewes over the last few summers and dining quality can change from season to season with new chefs. ownership changes, etc. of all the places in lewes i would reccomend azafran. a decent cafe and lunch spot during the day, but a better than average tapas spot at night with a decent wine list. someone obviously has put some thought into the wine list and the food. definetly make areservation. i can reccomend some other places, but frankly many are no better than average in my opinion. i have not been to the second street grill, which i have heard decent things about. this may be the most or one of the most upscale experiences in lewes.
  25. http://www.mojohd.com/ ,works for me. i've been watching this show for awhile now and i do enjoy it, but i'd stop short of calling it great. you see very little cooking.the bulk of the show is daniel interacting with the local and sometimes national celebrities that are invited to dinner. chef boulud comes across as great guy. definetly a guy i'd want to spend a few hours at the dinner table with.
