  1. are they the fried pickles? holly- what are bbq'd onions?
  2. anyone catch the reunion show last night? a nice diversion from watching yankees run around the bases. beyond that it was truly awful. i guess the formula is 1) gather a an odd group of people 2) add alcohol 3) film.
  3. there is http://www.braborestaurant.com/. this is relatively new and i haven't been there but, i have always eaten well at robert wiedmaier's other places, marcels and brasserie beck. the brabo tasting room or supper menu may be a little more budget friendly.
  4. sounds like you hit them on an off night. the pizzas i had last weekend were crisp and delicious. no soggy centers. totally agree with you on the wine list.
  5. i'm sure the seats will fill.
  6. what was the deal? you couldn't reserve more than 5 seats? so they grabbed two reservations for 5?
  7. agreed. i also will add that the sommelier (sp?) was a huge help in the wine selection process. he let us try two or three different things before we decided. i was happy with the wine we had with dinner. i just find the list kind of uninteresting and overpriced for what it is. but, damn the food is good!
  8. all the food we had saturday night was very, very good. expensive, but worth it in my opinion. my only gripe here is the wine list. decent enough, but not interesting for what they charge. in their defense, that's probably more the plcb's influence than teh restaurants.
  9. i was there saturday night. it was awesome.
  10. the ramapo tomatos are awesome. as good as the more expensive heirlooms imo. delicious in gazapacho tonight. i'm going to can a bunch this week.
  11. i love france it's people, bistro and brasseries as much as you do but, there is alot of bad food to be had in paris. i'm sure there's plenty of whatever the french version of sysco is making deliveries in paris.
  12. mr culton made a point of saying that the 50 cents an ear for mirai was just for that day. i thought it was pretty delicious. a little chewier than silver queen.

    Brasseries

i'm not sure i know the diffference between a brasserie and a bistro. (long ago didn't a brasserie brew their own beer?) but if your looking for a bustling place with classic french bistro dishes, wine by the carafe and half carafe, stella and leffe on tap, french waiters and waitresses, then go to wash dc and spend some time at Bistro du Coin. also in dc are brasserie beck and michels'. both excellent places that are a bit finer establishments than bistro du coin. not sure why dc seems to have the bistro/brasserie thing down so well.
  14. do they really need another iron chef?
  15. good list but, how do they leave off roast pork sandwich at dinics or johns?
  16. if you like cheese, i wouldn't miss downtown cheese. anything form here would be nice in your cooler for later down the road. also, they usually have unusual vinegars and olive oils. very knowledgable help at the counter.
  17. just a follow up to philidinings post; i think it would be a shame to miss the italian market. if you are staying with friends you could pick up a seriously good meal for reasonable cost. fresh pasta from superior ravioli or talluto's (sp?), sausages from sonny d'angelos, cheese from dibruno's, bread from sarcones, produce from any street vendor or anastasia's, the possibilites are endless. d'angelos also has unusal meats like ostrich, kangaroo, whole rabbit, etc. this would be about as authentic a philly experince as anyone could have. while there get a panini from dibruno pronto, check out fante's cookware shop, good people watching too.
  18. if you're into belgian beer www.monkscafe.com has one of ,if not the best, selection in the country.
  19. i would add: taco's at headhouse square market. available only on sunday roughly 11:00-1 or so. i haven't been yet this year but am assuming they are doing this again. it is a local restaurant that sets up at the market on sunday morning. i think the best deal in town currently is at marigold kitchen. www.marigoldkitchenbyob.com they are currently offering $30 for three courses on sundays. the food is superb and it is byob to boot. unique because of location, and its setting which is a converted city home that still feels very much like eating in someone's house. i had a seriously good meal here last weekend and have to believe this is one of the best byob's in town.

    Union Trust

i think those costs for retail orders must be to protect the retail business's that buy from them. d'artagnan is the same deal. i can get whole pekin ducks at jannssen's in wilmington (which is an insanely expensive grocer) for less than ordering from d'artagnan's site.

    is that 4 8 ounce steaks for $140? $70/lb?
  23. if you are in wilmington, how about the hotel dupont? the green room oozes class, and the brandywine room is really nice also.
  24. state line is awesome. i go there all the time.
