  3. Great Celcius has winter specials. In the past they were closed in Jan - Mid Feb. We'll have to try them out. Hillvalley - There's a new Amish market on Rt. 6 just west of Ellendale. My wife has stopped there and picked up some cold cuts and steaks. We haven't been there for an in depth investigation but if they're anything like the Amish market in Silver Spring it's worth the trip.
  4. I've been reading this thread with great interest because I've been in the area for over 40 years and have seen Silver Spring go through lots of changes. I've been to most of the places mentioned and then some and in the entire discussion there has been no mention of one of the great eating establishments in the downtown area, and that is the Quarry House. I don't know wheather it's still there but I've heard it was. The food is not so good but the ambiance is unforgettable. It's downstairs in a basement about 3 or 4 blocks south of Colesville Rd around the corner on the east side of Ga. Ave. Also I haven't tried it since it opened but just past the underpass on the west side of Ga. Ave is Mayorga Cafe. I was there before the opening and the food that Martin prepared was awesome. And the coffee kicked.
  5. I believe that Espuma is open year around.
  6. If you like Indian food there is a resturant near the courthouse called the Bombay Bistro that everyone loves.
  7. I just returned from a wonderful 10 day stay in Lewes. We found many place to dine but only dined out 3 times and once for a nice breakfast. We started with an after movie dinner at Big Fish wich never fails to produce a very nice dinner. A couple of nights later my sone came in from Philly and the three of us went to Espuma for Roast Duck and Lamb Wellington. On New Years we went to Sydneys for some live blues and another great dinner. We met up with a couple of friends from home one morning and traveled to Oas Orchard to have breakfast at the Whitecaps Cafe only to find it closed, but around the corner some folks had bought an local bar and eating establishment and reopened as a little better place. The breakfast was awesome. All of us are on different diets, veggie only, low carb, hi protien, and me (none). I had a fantastic sausage gravy over homemade buscuits, my wife, an omlet with no bread, home friews or any other carb ladened foods, on of our freinds requested scrambled eggs with whites only and the kitchen handled it with no problem. Next to Big Fish there is the Big Fish Market where you can buy almost anything they serve and cook yourself. We visited there several times. Although very quiet we had a great time and can't wait to get back.

    The Christmas Mix

During the late 80's and early 90's a group of about 8 of my friends and myself used to scatter far & wide collecting cases of holiday cheer. Unfortunately we have scattered to the wind, the search became harder for fewer rewards and I haven't participated in 7 or 8 years. It was a lot of fun. Sounds like you folks are going to have a great gathering. Happy holidays to all.
  9. My current fav is Delirum Tremens. Also enjoy Copperhead - Helles Lager
  10. We'll probably pick up a couple of lobsters and cooking them at home, after trying to see Lord Of The Rings.
  11. My wife & I have been making Hoppin John on New Years day for about 17 years. We are starting to serve Pasole on Christmas Day. We've done this for 4 years and plan to continue.
  12. Hi everyone. I love rum. Having said that I like Mojitos alot but they are a real pain to make the right way so I usually only make them in the summer on weekends and vacations. My simple rum drink is a glass of ice with Cruzan Single Barrel covering the cubes.
  13. I been to most of the Liquor stores in the area over the years abd can usually find something drinkable. The people in the shop on Rehobeth Ave are great and have been trying to get me a bottle of Pyrat Pistol for almost a year. I've never tried Fusion but have been tempted. It so hard to walk past Celcius and not go in.
  14. Hi. Thought I'd sahre my preferences with you all. Tequila Rum Vodka Single Malts Not very fond of Gin or Burbon.
  15. An excellent wine selection is a MUST in the area, but what I find shocking is the poor selection of beers offered by even the best places. The beer selection usually sounds like a frat house refrigerator. Dog Fish Head is the best that most places offer. Ican't find a good IPA anywhere except for the liquor stores and even then Miller Lite and Bud dominate.
  16. I spend a great deal of time in Rehobeth & Lewes and find the resturants there a never ending wonderland. FWIT here are my humble opinions. Casapulla's for subs - Agree 100% Dogfish Head for beer and beer food - Disagree...average at best Thrasher's for french fries - The very best, but an import from OC Ristorante Zebra (is it still there?) Great food & yes it's still there The Back Porch Cafe - was not impressed. It's lost some of it's luster. LaLa Land - never been but my wife went last summer and wasn't impressed 1776 - Average steak house even with $50 cuts of dry aged beef the Cultured Pearl - never been but have heard that it is great. Patsy's - haven't been, but will. It's the latest buzz. Big Fish Grill - Great. Eat there alot. Usually and hour wait even in Feb. There's now a market next door that sell everything the the resturant serves. Blue Moon - good food A few worth mentioning not covered above Upscale - Espuma & Celcius - $$$$ Good Mex - Poco Loco - great margaritas & much better than Tujuana Taxi. Breakfast at The Whitecaps Cafe in Oak Orchard. A call in advance and a drive to Bethany can net a wonderful meal at DiFebos.
  17. I raost inside, in my private little cigar room, with the exhaust fan at full blast so I don't worry much about ambient temperature. I was looking at one of them also, but the budget director wants me to get a hot air popcorn popper instead.
  18. Hi everyone. I haven't posted for a while but had to delurk to join this discussion. I've been roasting for about a year and a half. I use an Alpenrost and until recently have had great luck with the drum roaster. It's beginning to lose some of the heat so I'll be getting something else. Maybe another Alp. I like the 1/2 lb capacity alot 'cause I don't have great amounts of time to roast every night. I bought beans through Sweet Maria's. They have a great selection, but mostly I get my beans from Mayorgacoffe.com. There's nothing like fresh roasted coffee.
  19. Sure, come on by. Of course it may be done at the Delaware shore this year. Just follow the smell. LOL I will probably order this week and set up for the next few weeks, depending on the harvest.
  20. In my humble opinion noone in the DC area does really good green chile cooking. After a few attempts we've given up. At my house, every August, we order 50 - 75 lbs of green chile's from New Mexico, spend a weekend having a roasting party, bag 'em up in groups of 6 and freeze them. Then all year around we have the great flavor of roasted green chile's whenever we want and have the time to do the work of thawing, peeling & chopping. Can't have a good green chile stew without 'em.
  21. I was there a couple of years ago and we ate at a place called Tortuga's Lie (I think). As I remember it was down somewhere near the 10 mile marker. I don't remember what I had but do remember that it was very good and very crowded.
  22. I have to disagree with vengroff & =Mark ( the chilehead). Unless you make your margaritas with some sort of sweetened mix or add simple syrup to your drinks. I make mine by taking a shot of tequila, top shelf; a shot of tripple sec, cointeau, grand marnier, or curacao, and a shot made of fresh squeezed limon, lime and orange (tangerine, tangelo or blood orange) juice, shake and serve staight up in a salted glass. This mix allows the flavor of the agave to shine through, while giving the fruity tastes of the critus to give some tart flavor. I learned this recipe from my brother in law in Albequerque who learned from a friend of his who owns Marias in Sante Fe and wrote a book called "The Ultimate Margarita", if I remember correctly. Robert Redford wrote the forward for the book and if good enough fro Redford it's good enough for me. We NEVER use mixes or crushed ice. This recipe has become a Friday night MUST at our house, and in the winter keeps away colds and flu. I realize that this is a personal opinion but I can really tell the difference in an El Tosoro or Chinaco and a Cuereo Gold. In fact I never drink Cuervo gold, it ain't real tequila. Tres Generiaciones is OK along with Hornitos and Cuerve Tradicionale. I won't even order them in reaturants any more. But I'm a tequila snob.
