  1. Just to add my $.02. I've been buying my green chile's (about 50# per year) from Superbly Southwestern for 4 years now and have had them shipped to MD. This years batch are awesome. I think that I saw in their brochure that they will ship internationally. Someone gave the link to the website above. Here it is again: http://www.hotchile.com/ Good Luch
  2. I couldn't agree more. I'd rather have a chile dog from 7-11. But, try it your self and form your own opinion. Many people swear by Ben's.
  3. I am reminded of a song that was written when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash in 1959. Someone wrote and recorded a tribute song to them and with apologies to the author I'd like to paraphrase a couple of lines: "Julia's cooking for God now, a banquet in the sky, Gee, we're going to miss you Everybody sends their love." See will be missed.
  4. Nectar closes at 10 on Thursday's so I don't thin that we'll be able to make it. Sequoia & McFaddens sound interesting.
  5. I'm looking for a good place to grab an after theater dinner on Thursday night, where we can get to quickly and eat relatively light and good. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give. Price is not a major consideration.
  6. I'm looking forward to spending a glorious 10 day's in the area and have already taken Woody's words to heart and have Nage in our sights. Also will be trying Venus On The Halfshell. Have heard good things. I read earlier that AJ's didn't impress. I agree for the most part but my wife say's the crabcakes are the best around. Even better than Gilligans. And I've heard that they are now producing their own beer.
  7. After being in the DC area for forty years the only thing that I've seen around here that may be truly home-grown may be the porkchop sandwich. I used to order them in some of the poorer parts of town when I had projects in those area. They consist of two pices of Wonder Bread with a porkchop in between. I've also sampled chicken breast sandwiches, which were the same but a fried chicken breast between the bread and sometimes mombo sauce. A few years ago the Post (I think) had a contest to find a dish that was native to the area and the best they could come up with was a half smoke, aparently invented here and popularized by Ben's Chili Bowl (btw, I don't like their chili) and Navy Beans as served by the (I think) congressional Cafeteria.
  8. Where is Beautiful Foods It's in one of the first little strip centers on the north side of Rehoboth Ave. just as you come off Rt. 1 The shop doesn't reflect the name but the products they carry are awesome.
  9. Can you imagine my surprise when I sat down to partake in a wine & food tasting at one of my favorite Rehoboth resturants at a table with 6 strangers and the last two gentlemen to sit introduced themselves as Woody & Bruce. Knowing that SWoodieWhite was a fan of Celcius I casually looked over and sayd " Are you SWoodyWhite?" The stranger looked at me with a somewhat startled look and said "yes"? I intorduced myself and we proceeded to enjoy a wonderful event with a group of about 30. It was a pleasure meeting these two fine gentlemen. I'll leave it up to Woody to describe the meal and wines. he can do so far better than I. Also a report on AJ's Brewing Co. Not a review because I haven't tried their fare as of yet. I went by last weekend and the sign said that they'd be opening at 9PM on Saturday and another in the door saying they's be open at 7PM. I called and was told that they had just gotten the Dept. of Health OK the afternoon before and were scrambling to get open. The bar would be open at 7 and the kitchen at 9. That was a little too late for us to wait for diner and they were evolving the menu. This weekend we drove down on Saturday for the above mentioned Wine & Food Tasting so were limited in time, but two of our friends tried it out. One had what she said was a very good fish & chips and the other had lamb chops, but was a little disappointed as she wanted rack of lamb. They both said the food was very good. I stopped in on Sunday AM and picked up a menu and as I was doing so a voice came from the back room saying that the menu was a work in progress. Looks like burger, pizza some intersting sandwiches and so forth. I spoke with the person behind the the door and was told that they were brewing their own root beer as of now and were meeting with someone this week about setting up their brewing system. Until then their beer is being brewed by Fordham. We'll eat their in a couple of weeks and let you know what we think FWIW.
  10. Zebra was still there last April, but I haven't checked since. We may go again in a couple of weeks for my dear one's B'day. If not there I'll let you know.
  11. Ooops, that was downstairs at Dailey's.
  12. Exactly - I really enjoyed mid-town & the Virginia Highlands, though I don't know if these areas are considered as near-by. What really got me was the panhandlers around the hotels. I've never seen anything like it. The minimum seemed to be $5. Less than that I was insulting the "fellow". Also, so that I don't sound like too much of a food snob, I also ate at Chec-fil-a (man, I love 'em), Orange Julius, some unknown pizza place in the Peachtree Center (not too bad) and some Cajun fast food place. I love good fast food. I did try the chicken wings in the downstairs cigar bar whilst puffing on an Anejo. They were very good.
  13. Heading that way on Friday with great hopes that AJ's Brewing Co. will finally be open. BTW, SWoodyWhite have you been to Beautiful Foods, yet? My wife & I stumbled in there last weekend and found a selection of cheeses that is unrivaled in the area.
  14. David, I hope that the point that I was trying to make, before I got carried away , is that the area around the hotels is very expensive and better deals can be had elsewhere.
  15. Very true. I'm used to meals of the not inexpensive variety whe traveling but I did a bit of menu surfing in the area and found most of the pricing around the hotels to be fairly pricey for what the food was. MY friends were probably trying to show off. I did notice an ESPN Zone around the corner but I don't usually frequent those type of places. BTW, I really did enjoy each dining experience. I thought about going upstairs at Daileys but one of the people wanted to take me to Wisteria. Well worth the trip.
  16. Stayed at the Haytt a couple of weeks ago and found a couple of things that you should know if you haven't left yet. First of all, stay off the streets in the Hotel area. All I ran into were a bunch of panhandlers that wern't happy with a buck. Told me that I insulted them. Good eats in the Virginia Highland area. Had a friend pick me up and take me there so I don't know what a cab would cost but I ate in two resturants in the area. The first was Manuels Tavern. They had excellent pub style food and a great beer called 606. I hasd a lamb sandwich that was great. the second was an upscale place called Wisteria. I had a crab bisque and aa salad. Also dined at Mid City Cuisine. Very good but pricey. Our table had A duck breast, rabbit & one of the largest porkchops that I have ever seen. Nest was a very pricey diner at a southwest style place called Nava in buckland. It was exteremly costly but the bartender made me one of the best Margarita's east of Santa Fe. I had to describe what I wanted but he did it very well. The most remarkable dish that I had was a lobster stuffed soft taco with a chipolte sauce, that was to die for. Way out was the 5 Seasons Brewing Co. About 7 inhouse brews and a fantastic menu. I had a buffalo quail on a bed of carrots & something else that I don't remember. The cab ride was $35.00 one way. Luckly I was meeting some people and got a ride back to the hotel. Except for the food court in the Peachtree Center ....NOTHING was cheap. If interested, though, On International Drive, just across the street the was a very nice Martini & Cigar bar called Dailey's. Very nicew people and good bar snacks. There is a resturant upstairs that I didn't try but is supposed to ver good, but again $$$. Good luck and stay out of the Parasol Bar unless you want to spend lots.
  17. "Any chance you know the address to Granny's?" Not the addy buy it's on the corner of Franklin & 11th St NE. You can't miss thae building, it flaming pink.
  18. bbq4meanytime - Before going looking for Granny's try finding a phone # and calling. As I've said they're sporatic as to opening. I haven't been able to figure out their schedule. BTW, they do have other kinds of BBQ than NC style. But this Carolina boy uses that as a gauge.
  19. Some of the best BBQ that I've tasted around DC is a place called Granny's on 10th NE a block or two N of Rhode Island Ave. They serve NC style BBQ that I haven't eaten the likes of in 40 years. They always have collard greens and some corn bread that is unique. They usualluy have 5 or 7 different kinds of BBQ available. Chicken, ribs, short ribs, pulled prok, etc. The biggest problem is you never know when they will be open. It's very sporatic.
  20. I've been using an Alpenrost for a couple of years now and after the learning curve, I've been roasting a pound or more a week. It's fairly easy to use and clean, the results are very good. The cost is high.
  21. The sign says AJ's Brewing Co.. I don't know what that means but I'm very hopeful.
  22. bbonz14 - I respect you decision not to reveal your resturant. I hope someday to stumble in and enjoy it. Long Neck and area has some good things going. There are a couple of great breakfast places at the end of Rt. 5 in Oak Orchard and I've heard that the newer on, Serindiptiy had good dinners. My friends also say that Villa Rosa is very good Italian. At Peddlers Village the old Ashby's is undergoing new ownership and renovation into AJ's and it's looking like a brew pub. I hope so as I have a little weekend place near there. Capriotti's over Casapulas? IMHO - close but I'll still take Casapulas first.
  23. Susan in FL....Hummmm....There seems to be some negativity in you response. We are getting ready to make reservations for Valentines dinner there.
  24. Anyone tried The Villa Rosa on Long Neck Road? The menu looks good.
