  1. do you mean where the Globe (vegan cafe) used to be? As there is also a new liquor license notice in the window of the still closed 1200 bistro at 12th and pike
  2. I have been able to find info on the French editions it just seems odd he doesn't seem to have been translated. My French is pretty rough these days and was hoping for a poetic translation out there a la Fisher's version of Physiology of Taste. At this point if I could find the original text in french I'd be happy to run it through a translation program. Anyone savvy with the Francophone websites? Since it must be public domain at this point any ideas?
  3. He's often quoted and was such a character but I can't seem to find any translations or anthologies of his Almanach. Amazon, Alibris, Addall, the Seattle Public Library reference librarians all come up empty, any suggestions?
  4. The people watching from the 4th and Pine corner windows of Juan Valdez would be hard to beat. Watching the foot traffic from a former Bon Marche display window is major entertainment. They claim to be owned by the coffee growers association of Columbia who have the trademark on the fictional namesake. I'm mostly a drip drinker and prefer theirs to the more roasted others in town.
  5. What do we know about the new Victrola going in on Pike? There is a liquor license application in the window but I don't know anything else. Its right at the bend in Pike at summit in the old auto repair space.
  6. Ceasar tossed at the table, steak tartare, lamb chops, steak, souflees and creme brulee? Is this a restaurant or a museum?
  7. Tango serves decent tapas and is immediately uphill from the Convention Center at Pike and Boren and has a privatish glassed in room for groups of maybe up to a dozen. As close as it is, just being on the other side of I-5 puts it in a different neighborhood and it feels that way.
  8. Today is supposed to be the opening. Someone go get some and report back.
  9. The thread is getting long forgive me if I repeat, but my favorite is the lamb burger at Vios. at 6ish bucks it seems a best buy for a restaurant sandwich. Although that hybrid counter service with waiters at lunch leaves me confused. I don't know whether to appreciate counter service with a little extra or to go short on a tip and leave ruffled since everything wasn't done for me. I'll get over it.
  10. the indigenous fast-food that should not be overlooked for its pervasiveness is the local teriyaki joint, with its daily special of spicy chicken with gyoza. Daily meaning of course its the same special every day.
  11. Any new info about the Sushi/Coffee/NeighborhoodBar on 15th across from Walgreens on Capitol Hill? Work continues and the paper is off the windows but yet not quite looking like its opening soon.
  12. Is there a bar where one could have a drink and an appetizer in lieu of an entire meal? If the space is small I'd hate to fill a table with a small order making my support actually a loss. Or would early or late in the service be an option? (Ladybug is having a tight budget month.)
  13. The Bagel Deli is supervised and listed on the Va'ad HaRabanim websiteSeattlevaad for sale of whole kosher items but not as a kosher restaurant per se. For details and explanations of kosher requirements and a restaurant directory see the site.
  14. My first job in Seattle was in a little warehouse to the left and behind Pecos Barbecue on First. As good as the food was, smelling it cook every morning grew tired and that stuff is exhaustingly hot and spicy. There was (is?) a public cafeteria in the Sodo building a couple floors up we would escape to. Alternatively a zip south into Georgetown (usually quickest by Airport Way, but watch out for the speed trap) and I would goto Maruta Obento Japanese grocery for the best premade sushi in Seattle, better than many a restaurant.
  15. the bagel deli on 15th on Capitol Hill is an actual kosher, family-owned operation with better than most bagels. Fairly authentic with the exception of the breakfast bagel with bacon.
  16. Poussin-- sometimes they come really small. Don and Joes sell bags of tiny ones as quail. I think the term is usually just a general one for "spring chicken" and not a specific breed or species.
  17. Dinette is now open on Olive in the former Local Cafe former Green Cat location. Ricotta gnocchi and some double cut pork chops were some of the items on the menu in the window but my memory fails me for the rest except for the general impression of "looks good"
  18. New menu items at the Broadway Noahs Bagels include bagel dough baked around various Anhuls sausages including pork andouille. Considering their theme marketing of the products should one be offended at the insensitivity, could it possibly be extreme ignorance?
  19. Three examples of a growing trend of "better than just fast food but still counter service" would be Vios on 19th, Redline at Denny and Olive, and Baguette Box on Pine. Though not the finest like Lark IMHO we are going to see many more of these and the trend should not be ignored.
  20. Local's windows are now papered with a tiny sign anouncing "Dinette coming soon"
  21. Tony Bourdain's comments on the subject of Eggs benny made them forever after unpalatable to me. I think that was near the beginning of Kitchen Confidential when he explains when and what he won't eat in a restaurant. My copy has been on an extended loan or I'd quote. Anyone got a copy at hand?
  22. Local Cafe on Olive has gone "on vacation" most likely an extended one is my understanding.
  23. On Madison on First Hill there are Zeenas and also the First Hill bar and grill (acoss from Vitos.) Zeena's is friendlier and brighter, sort of an independent version of an IHOP, The FHB&G is divier but not as low a place as The Turf. It has more of the classic Greek diner feel to it imho.
  24. Also the former trinkets and treasures space on 15th now has "espresso -- neighborhood bar -- sushi" painted on the still papered windows. No name yet visible, any more info anyone?
  25. Two new Liquor license application notices are in windows on 15th; at the former Jacks Bistro and the only recently closed Maguires. Anyone have some inside info on these?
