A fresh loaf of no knead bread put to good use at the breakfast table as crostini foils for bruschetta pomodoro and a home made smoked salmon spread, accompanied by a very ripe pear. HC

Baby bok choy that had been pan sauteed with garlic, ginger and soy then broiled on Tuscan toast with Swiss and tomatoes. Homemade smoked salmon spread on toast with chopped red onion and capers. HC

Tacos last night. I realized after I put away the camera, that the shredded lettuce was still in the fridge and never made it into the pics. I find it to be an integral part of the taco whereas Deb likes hers as they appear, sans shredded lettuce. HC

One of our favorite places for lunch this time of year is in the town I grew up in, Mystic, Connecticut. The Captain Daniel Packer Inne ( the DPI) is an ancient tavern that was brought back from near extinction many years ago. It was here that I first experienced the magical combination of roasted garlic, crusty bread and soft butter. To this day, I can make a meal of this just by adding a small salad. Mystic is a tourist destination in the summer, so it is off limits to us then, but in the early spring on a nice day, it's where we like to go. There is a full scale restaurant upstairs, but the little tavern room downstairs is one of our favorite places. Today we got a table by the fire. The prerequisite roasted garlic, bread and butter is always the starter and today I added a few oysters and a half priced draft, The Captain's Daughter, from a local brewery called Grey Sails. Deb chose lemon chicken with beurre blanc sauce and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. I will be attempting to replicate the chicken soon. The roasted garlic mashed potatoes (hiding under the lemon) is already in my wheelhouse and was inspired by the ones I had here. I chose another app, mussels fra diavolo. HC

It looks like the secret is pushing down the outside of the cap to expose the twist off cap. HC

I decided to take my cold frame apart and make a few design improvements. In the interest of getting this season started I got this new one from Gardener's Supply Company. It came in two large boxes, but only took about 40 minutes to assemble. If you look closely, you can make out the row of Black Seeded Simpson lettuce seedlings, one of my favorite lettuce varieties. Some rather hastily prepared fried shrimp po-boys. Light on the presentation, but heavy on the flavor. HC

I was just out to the ramp patch yesterday and saw that they were just breaking the surface. My first batch came from eBay as well. I remember getting a little card saying there was a package waiting for pickup at the post office. When I went in, on my way home from work the next day, handed the card to the clerk, there was a pause and then the look of realization on her face as she declared "Oh, we delivered those!!!" I got home and discovered delivery consisted of the heavily scented package being tossed from the truck onto the middle of the front lawn. I don't think they were appreciated in the sorting room. HC

The truck from Point Judith was backing up to the loading dock as I pulled in, so I made my way right to the fish counter to see what was coming in. Soon a batch of fresh squid was put out on the ice and that was all I needed to see. One and a half pounds of uncleaned squid is just about right for the two of us. The price was right too! They were just about the perfect size and took just a few minutes to clean and portion. Next order of business was some spicy kimchi tartar sauce. I whipped up a small batch of coleslaw and the rest is history. HC

Bangers and chips. These ale and onion actually have much less flavor than the original flavor from Aldi. HC

A few years ago a friend was having replacement windows installed and I asked if I could have the old ones. I slapped together a cold frame on a whim and was amazed at how much it extended the season. I wish I had taken the time to do a better job and taken better care of the windows. They should have been stripped down and painted. This winter, I took the windows off and brought them inside and scraped, sanded, reglazed, primed and painted them. The process has taken so long that the cold frame is not back in place as early as I had hoped. I planted lettuce indoors in the hopes that I can put it back together and have lettuce growing in it soon. Here is the hastily slapped together cold frame last season with a lettuce crop. HC

Bruschetta on a thinly sliced crostini made with homemade bread. A local supermarket sells basil plants at a ridiculously low price and I just replaced mine with fresh ones. This was so good, I'm afraid I'm back on the bruschetta crazy train. HC

I had to visit the eye doctor this am. Even though my vision was declared 20/20 in both eyes, I just couldn't see coming home without sushi. HC
