I bought this corn meal dusted hard roll to make a sandwich for Deb to take to work, but she opted to take red curry chicken and cilantro lime rice, leftover from dinner so I decided to make a breakfast sandwich and everyone was happy! HC

Your Daily Sweets: What Are You Making and Baking? (2017 – )
HungryChris replied to a topic in Pastry & Baking
Thank you @Shelby! I am surprised to hear about your rhubarb not growing in Kansas. I worked as a computer programmer for a number of years and my first mentor, Steff, was a Polish immigrant. In addition to introducing me to many Polish food items, she overheard me say, one day that I wanted some rhubarb and brought in 2 plants from her yard. Steff is no longer with us, but those plants are, and are kind of special to me. HC -

I am not much for baking normally, but the rhubarb was just getting too big and blocking the sun from the blackberries I look forward to harvesting, so strawberry rhubarb pie seemed the logical solution. HC -

Korean BBQ rotisserie chicken, scalloped potatoes and a cucumber and onion salad. I did 2 of each, 1 as a dinner gift for Deb's Daughter and SIL. HC

I find the early morning hours to be the best for simple cultivation with the garden hoe and this morning was no exception. Using the row of soon to be picking lettuce as a reference, in front of that is a row of bush beans just emerging and up against the fence in the foreground are sugar snaps just starting to climb the fence. Just beyond the lettuce is zucchini. Just past that you can make out the next crop of lettuce (red leaf) just forming a row. Up against the fence to the left, are my shishito peppers (still quite small) and to the right are an assortment of red bell, jalapeno and habaneros and yes, green bell haters, there are some green bells as well (we both like stuffed peppers on occasion. Assorted tomatoes, I put in a few extra for fried green tomatoes, a taste we both acquired in NOLA. Here is a row of pickling cukes. Here is what I call the auxiliary cucumber patch up against the house. Lifting that big rock to the bottom left is what caused me to need dethatched retina eye surgery. The garden fence is something that I put up each season, because it is not unusual for deer to wander through the yard. Here is my little orchard. One morning I looked out the window to see three deer, two of which had both their front feet up in the pear tree in the foreground.

@Kim Shook, I have found that the best results are gotten when you buy the crab frozen and keep it frozen until you are ready to heat it up. Put it, still frozen, in a steamer basket, in a large covered pot over boiling water and keep the heat on high until about 2 minutes after the steam starts rattling the lid. HC

A sudden crop of mushrooms in the asparagus bed. I am too afraid of them to harvest any, however. HC

I boned some chicken legs and used the bones with pork neck bones for tonkotsu ramen the other night. Tonight we had the pan sautéed chicken leg cutlets with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and carrots. HC

I have often thought the same thing. I planted these chives easily 20 years ago and every year they come back rock solid. Many of their neighbors need to be replaced each season. This year it was the thyme. The rosemary always comes inside for the winter, but never the chives! HC

I have had the poached egg cling even to a non-stick pan quite a few times, so I put in a little olive oil before the water and vinegar this morning. HC

Last night was a cicchetti night, with pork and leek pot stickers, pan fried artichoke hearts and a cucumber salad. HC

What Are You Preserving, and How Are You Doing It? (2016–)

@JohnT, Sorry I missed this for a while. They are refrigerator storage. Every so often, Aldi has mushrooms on sale for 79 cents for a half a pound pkg and I make 2 quarts at a clip. I like them on their own and as a side or in a salad. They keep very well in the fridge. HC
