  1. I'm not buying any more bottled water! After last night, when I paid $2.30 each for three 1 litre bottles because IGA was sold out of their 4 litre jugs, I've had it with schlepping around to stores and lugging the bloody stuff home. I live in the South Granville area and the water doesn't look much different than usual. I drink so much water that I was having to replenish my stock almost every day and decided that last night was it. They're just covering their asses with all this boiled water advisory crap.
  2. Well, the guy with the orange hands is 6' and 115 lbs; that is anorexic in my books. It seems that some people are willing to try absolutely anything to either lose weight, prolong life, etc. But I can't imagine wasting so much time weighing each item of food and ensuring that I was eating an exact number of calories per meal. These people have too much time on their hands!!!
  3. Tamarind at Broadway and Fir is no more. It's now O Thai. Don't think anyone has posted about this yet. Guess there wasn't room for another Indian restaurant in the area.
  4. Not yawning here, Deborah! I love Parkside as well and would go regularly if I could. Love to hear about your meals there!
  5. Oh, I'm so glad you're going to Parkside; I love the food there, the ambience...try and get a picture of the "Johnny Depp" waiter who you always mention when you you describe your meals there!
  6. There was a discussion on this some time ago...not sure how to link to a thread but I'll try. http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=68466&hl=
  7. This is indeed a fascinating topic and thank you Tim for giving us not only a glimpse into your life but one into the lives of the fabulously wealthy!! It certainly sounds like a good gig (I'd take the two bedroom condo!!) but I also understand your frustrations with meals being prepared and not eaten, and having to make KD for the kids. I'm also not surprised that their tastes are not "gourmand"; money does not equal good taste.
  8. Happy New Year Klary! I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy this thread; I have learned a lot about my Dutch heritage! My father was born and raised in Rotterdam but moved to Canada (Ontario) when he was 19 to become a dairy farmer; he worked on a farm for a couple of years and eventually became a veterinarian and he and my mother moved to British Columbia after they married. He had many Dutch farmers as clients and many times I can remember him bringing fresh-baked oliebollen home (from one of the farmer's wives). Every Christmas we would get a care package from one of my aunts in Holland and of course we all loved the marzipan the best - we still talk about the year we got a big marzipan pig with eight little piglets! I decided that as part of my Christmas baking this year I was going to make the filled speculaas as a special treat for my father and it turned out very well, despite the fact that I was kind of estimating some of the measurements because I don't have a kitchen scale. I didn't find the almond taste very pronounced in the almond paste, which is probably a quality issue so next year I will either make my own or find a different brand. That being said, my father loved it (as did the rest of the family). So thank you for introducing us all to Dutch cooking (and baking!!).
  9. I am loving this blog!! Granted I am from Vancouver and am familiar with the Okanagan and the other areas that Jamie is going to visit but so far it has been a spectacular ride. And am I the only one who feels that I could fall in love with Jamie just from reading his prose??!!
  10. Sorry to have to tell you because it appears that you don't know, but Bis Moreno has closed
  11. OK - I've bookmarked your friend's site. What a wild thing to do! What possessed him to embark on this experiment (other than the Airmiles)?
  12. Thanks Mottmott - I actually ordered some from Simpson and Vail just before seeing your post. For anyone else in Canada who can't find it, here is their website Simpson and Vail. So hopefully within a couple of weeks I'll be making the Pave
  13. Thanks laniloa but they don't ship to Canada. I have definitely not seen anything like that in the stores here. I will continue my search!
  14. Well, longtime lurker on this absolutely wonderful topic (and this entire forum, actually). I bought CDBPH quite a few months ago but have contented myself with reading it thus far. I REALLY want to make the Pave but am having absolutely no luck finding the stem ginger (I'm in Vancouver). For those of you who have made it, were you all able to find the stem ginger and if not, what did you use instead? Many thanks for any suggestions!
