Do I remember reading that the much maligned Barbeque category has been dropped? Because I don't recall receiving an invite to judge that one. Then again, my voicemail has been acting up ... and my email crashes often ... and my Treo battery dies ... there's always smoke signals though. I'm sure if the category still existed, you wouldn't have forgotten about me ... A.

No kidding! Did you have a look at the brochure in barolo's post?? Stunning! Let me know when you're going. J & I will join you with our Maple Leaf chef's toques! A.

A pretty fair assesment of Dine Out featuring the Hamilton Street Grill Now I've been to a Saltspring Island garage sale, and have NEVER seen wrought iron! A.

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 3)

Boston Pizza - Pitt Meadows (watching the All-Star game with my sons) ParkCrest Diner - Burnaby Panago - at home watching "Pirates of the Caribean" Our version of DOV ... and it doesn't involve a 90 minute time limit! A. -
I'm wondering about a couple things here Deb ... 1) Was this an "early" DOV menu (i.e. did Parkside start their DOV menu early)? 2) Your love of Parkside is well known. Why would you visit during the circus that is DOV? The second question can apply to anyone. Do you visit places you already frequent during DOV, or do you branch out and try something new? A.

Only a little? I think I'm going to print out that review just for the pleasure of shredding it! A.

You are a woman after my own heart! Was it the Gaugrey Epoisses? Truly awesome stuff. I've jad my fill of Vacherin for the year, but the Mozzarella sounds like a trip is required .... A.

International Sausage House is the place I believe you mean. Not sure about the pickled sausages ... but still worth a visit. How difficult can pickled sausages be to make? A.
-
Don't you mean Vancouver culinary icon Chef Michel Jacob as opposed to Chef Emile Jung of Au Crocodile? ← Easy mistake. Strasbourg ... Vancouver. It's like the same place, no? A.
-
Well Steven, I guess you'd have to ask the writer about that. It could be she feels Lumiere & West (and Tojo's, C, etc etc etc) didn't make the cut this year. However, considering each restaurant on the list is new, I'd say Canucklehead has it correct. A.

Thank you Richard Prior. A.

I'm surprised nobody has brought up barbeque, bar-b-q, or even bbq! I'm pretty sure the USA is the only place pulled pork has evolved ... although I'm sure I'll be corrected at some point HERE is a link to a similar discussion we had on Canadian cuisine a while back. I'm not sure cuisines in the "New World" can be defined in the same way "Italian" and "French" or even "Chinese" can since they evolved in isolation and under different socio-economic conditions. A.

what's the difference between a rangetop and a cooktop? ← Cooktop has the burners and controls on the same surface, whereas a rangetop has the controls on the front. The difference is the rangetop gives you more cooking area in the same amount of space because of the lack of handles. Rangetops generally tend to be of a higher quality than cooktops. A.

I think people who perform this stunt should be flogged and then black-flagged for the rest of the year ... and then flogged some more. No, there's nothing technically wrong with it, but you have to be pretty thick to miss how this flies contrary to the spirit of the event. It's like the folk that fill their gloveboxes full of napkins and ketchup from their favorite fast food joints, and then bitch when said fast food joint decides to start handing them out only at the cash register. Doofusses(sp?) A.

Yeah ... I was going to say something about that, but it just seemed so petty. Thin crust pizzas, calzones ... bread. This is a coffee place right? Would biscotti work? A.

Damn! Lousy time of year for a broken heart. Been there, done that, almost wrote a book ... I'll second Bacchus Lounge and add the Lounge at Le Soleil as well (although it was about 3 years ago when I was last there) If 12th & Cambie isn't too far, Figmint has a nice lounge and the food is quite good. Can't couch for the msuic volume tho' ... A.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing! Did you stop in next door for gaufres? A.

Just finished shopping for the Christmas cheese plate at the Daddy-A household: Fourme d'Ambert, Colton-Basset Stilton, St. Andre, Gruyere (forget the name ... begins with "K"), 3 y.o. Quebec Cheddar (again, forgot the dairy) and Salt Spring Island Chevre. Saturday night we'll be enjoying some Vacherin Mont d'Or baked with garlic and Reisling. What's on your cheese plate this Yule-time? A. What a friend we have in Cheeses.

Germania Bakery Challenges in Steveston Village

I call bullshit. Where did he immigrate from where a business doesn't require permits to renovate? I'd understand if he was used to bribing officials and ended up all red-faced because the nice city official wouldn't take his Borden offering. But "I didn't know you needed a permit"? Sounds like he tried to cut corners and got caught. Tsk tsk. And I'm with Keith on the nimby comment. Steveston only just barely nudges Kelowna out of first place. A. -
Remind me never to invite you over for dinner. You need help. A.

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 3)

Yeah .. I have to agree. Although I might be a little biased, since Shiro is right next door to my showroom and I eat there at least twice a month. People have even accused Shiro-san and I of being twins ... Eerie, no? A. -
Having recently enjoyed a post-drunken-Christmas-Party-brunch I feel qualified to add my two bits here. Get ye to the Lucky Diner. Me: 2 eggs poached (perfectly), bacon, sausage, hash browns and a cheese biscuite. Spouse: Corned beef Eggs Benny. (Is that the same corned beef that appears in the Reuben? Is it produced in house? Whatever ... it's GOOD) The bacon and the biscuit on their own were worth the trip. Hollandaise on wife's Benny was excellent ... lots of love and butter put in that sauce for sure! Glad to hear they've turned town the tunes to an appropriate level given the accoustics of the room (gawd I sound old and cranky). It was especially appreciated consider the state of my head. A.

Had lunch there with canucklehead a couple weeks ago, and am going again this Friday with some co-workers for a pre-Christmas lunch. Top-notch. really. The parsely & reisling soup with the poached egg was rich without being heavy. I had the duck confit w/ beets & green beans, and canucklehead had the chicken cutlet ... both were very well executed. The room is really cool from a designers point of view (which I am) but the bar stood out for me. I need to do a Friday night cocktail club there ... A.

Or maybe somebody from the restaurant is, like I should have done, giving the hack as much attention as she deserves, and ignoring her. A.

Here's the quote from the review: I don't get what the problem is. She's paid for a tasting flight, not an individual bottle. If all the wines in the $65 flight were of that value, then agreed, it's a porblem. But this was just wine out of several. Perhaps there were some other exceptional wines she hasn't described, and the Heartland just evened things out. Something else she never mentions: Did she like the wine???? Or maybe I'm not well versed enough in wine to appreciate what's she's driving at ... A.
