Which of Julie Sahni's garam masala recipes do you use? the basic garam masala from classic indian cooking(roasted and no nutmeg)
-
i use julie sahnis recipe for garam masala so that's fine then-i guess the coconut was the significant difference though it was barely noticeable.
-
that's good then-on both fronts!

i've eaten dill in vadais as well as in a kind of mixed greens vegetable in the south but i can't say how far back its usage goes.the vadais are very good with dill in them. Edward, could you please post your recipe for garam masala-i couldn't find one online-kept coming up with one that calls for '1/2 a cup of green peppercorns' as one of the ingredients..?

from Vikram's list-'rotis and naans' is one i would recommend to anyone interested in making indian breads.it's been around quietly for years and i don't know that there's been a better one yet.the non bread recipes are pretty good too. i like jasleen dhamija's book too-nice clean feel to all the recipes.i came a cropper with that detox soup though!i like her 'eccentric aunt ' style.

Verjuice,i've been downing the most delicious 'date syrup'with a lot of things.would you know if this syrup is made from the sap of the date palm or from the fruit?

once again Monica-enjoyed!the article also reminded me of a long running joke here-from the label on my pack of tulsi tea"tulsi reduces stress, enhances stamina, boosts immunity.......protects against radiation"!! -standing instructions in the event of a nuclear strike-brew up some tulsi tea! and if you're wanting your own doomsday pack, click here! your grandma would approve.

i think it's wonderful that you work around allergies and manage to incorporate all kinds of cuisines.there are probably many fringe benefits too-that lunch for instance has turmeric which among other things, has anti inflammatory properties.but i guess you know that! chimichurring something for dinner tonight!

looong line ups at little kiosks(hot and juicy i think) in gurgaon mall to get a plastic cup of sweet corn kernels with some chilli sauce poured over.

black sesame works wonders-but then we'd have to think of other excuses -
corn is actually grown in a lot of places in india and cultivation is increasing from what i read.the only flatbreads i've eaten are makki di roti and a tibetan version.kangra, ladakh, and other places( in the hills particularly) where corn is grown and the diet traditionally includes millets would no doubt include corn flour/meal in their repertoire.there is also a fair bit grown in karnataka in the south though i'm not sure that corn meal shows up in the diet-the hardy millet, ragi is common though.there's an interesting debate about just how old corn cultivation is in india. traditional role of corn in this indian's diet hmm-corn flakes- champion( cardboard )and mohuns' (only slightly better) brands. canned sweet corn niblets and canned sweet corn niblets cream style-usually tossed into 'bakes'. sweet corn soup indo- chinese style street food corn on the cob-roasted or boiled. corn off the cob and spiced up for a delicious snack. baby corn is big in india as a vegetable.i like it raw with a dip. i dislike the new, hybrid sweetcorn that has taken over the indian market.much prefer the older kind which was kind of chewy/chalky/nutty all at once. more when i remember!
