  1. Can we now officially call this horse that we are STILL whipping "dead"? Jesus Christ, for everyone but Michael and his employees, it's JUST A FUCKING RESTAURANT! PS - Michael what'll the reservation system in SS look like?
  2. I guess there's enough room around here for more than one Peanut. Mine got the name when I looked at the first MRI and exclaimed, "It looks like a Peanut!". Congratulations to all three of you. Pitocin and no pain meds? Good god, that's one tough lady you got there.
  3. I'd like my eGullet without extra snark, please. ← oooh oooh OOOOH! If you don't want yours, I'll take it. I LOVE snark!!!!!!
  4. Next happy hour, I'm tempted to request only a trough of those raviolis, but the lamb is just so damn good. I see a Firefly v. Corduroy lamb loin challenge coming up.
  5. All true. Another good one is to tell hospital that your water broke (helps if your OB/GYN is in on it)
  6. It DID take a while to load (with no "skip" option). I guess I'm lucky that I don't have speakers hooked up here at work ← I don't have my speakers on either. The headache was caused purely by the visual. Those rolling bars of orange shades and the trying to decipher the dropdowns with the pictures rolling beneath them.
  7. Any designer who would create a web site that takes 5 seconds to load over a T1 line desrves to crushed under a load of Commodore 64's. Please restaurants!! Quit utilizing designers that create sites that are so "noisy". Almost without fail, they only load up on "cool" tricks to hide design incompetence. I think that this is a perfect example. Excuse me, I need to go take an aspirin now.
  8. The bistro at Eve does take reservations (recommended). I generally sit at the bar where the bistro menu is available. There are some small tables in the bar area where they will serve you as well. ← Those little tables are more like coffee tables in height. Can make it a little awkward to eat. Try to get a spot at the bar if at all possible.
  9. Do the Spuds still play there regularly? Now there's a Pgh institution.

    Greek wine & cheese

Sounds interesting. Be careful with the Retsina. It is definitely an acquired taste. Serve it as an apperitif as it will overwhelm any food. The demestica blanc is cheap, generic, usually drinkable table wine. The Mavrodaphne is a dessert wine. To me, it is also an acquired taste.
  11. Chicken confit -- spectacular. Beautifully crisp without being too salty. Thank you greatly for that one Chef Tom. Red Snapper Bisque -- Another Tom Power soup winner. Very nicely balanced tastes. Went very well with the Chardonnay chosen by fero style (could you pm exactly what that was please, ferhat?) Lamb loin with mini-raviolis -- Oh my! The lamb was beautiful. Perfectly prepared. A nice simple dish that really hit the spot. The only problem was that by this time I was stuffed. My buddy matt had told me that after sitting in hearings all day he had been starving and had already grabbed a burger and didn't want to eat anything. Then he had the chicken. I gave him a bite of the lamb. He said that he'd be kicking himself all night for having earlier given into hunger before arriving at Corduroy. His two other quotes-- "This is in a Sheraton Four Points?!" "When I come back to DC, probably in a month or so, we're coming back here. The (insert name of overfunded medical association he works for) will be paying."

    Some stock questions

Me too (and not just the bones). That's why I was wondering

    Some stock questions

good point, and rest assured that I don't use knawed turkey bones...just the carcass when I make the after holiday gumbo mentioned above. ← Forgive me if I am wrong, but for the home chef, what could possibly be the problem with using the bones off of peoples' plates? I mean, these things will be going into 180-200 degree water for the next x number of hours. Is it an actual germ thing or just squeemishness?
  14. From what I have read there are two main reasons 1) With reservations, people who walk in see empty tables and can feel mis-treated when the reservation walks in. Not saying that they should, only that it happens. 2) With no reservations, restaurants don't have to hold empty tables out of circulation. This means more covers for the night and more $$
  15. Different. You are making the claim that RFD food sucks all the time based on repeated observation of the identical phenomenon. You are not claiming that the food sucks at all beer-centric restaurants. Add in that the food stinks at the Brickskellar and ain't too good at Cap City. Now we're seeing the basis for universal causality.
  16. Exactly. You made your choice based on having a good school system. I made mine to make it easier to expose Peanut to a wider variety of cultural experiences available inside the beltway. I am in no way saying that one choice is better than the other. For me my choice was better. For you, your choice was. No need to get defensive. Please reread my previous post -- You are one person. Most of the people I have met who end up choosing to live in the outer 'burbs are not the same as you. We can agree to disagree pleasantly. have a lovely day.

    Firefly

Get them. You will be happy. Very happy. Very very happy. Not that I've been out too much recently, but these are my favorite new app of 2005. Good call Derek. Another loverly wine happy hour. Thanks to all. John, could you PM the name of that Bordeaux you were pouring last night? And a final special thanks to jparrot for his addition to the evening.
  19. Frankly Joe, I don't think anything much above a family restaurant has a chance out there. Are there exceptions? Sure. But I'm not talking specifics here, but generalities. So no one nail me with PagoPago syndrome. The fact is that the types of people that tend to want to go to a Firefly, or a Corduroy, much less a Galileo or a Citronelle, tend not to be the people who choose to move to Vienna or Herndon. People who tend to want to patronize those types of more upscale places are more likely to want to live in more urbanized environs where they can take advantage of other cultural opportunities. Herndon and Vienna are suburbs, granted they have small town centers, but they are indeed largely populated by people who expressly do not want to live within the beltway and take advantage of the cultural opportunities of a central city. You may, but you are an exceptional person Joe. As a side note and not limited to this thread or pointed at anyone specific, I complain about it all the time on this site, but goddamn some of the people around here need a lesson in basic priciples of scientific inquiry and logic. Anecdotoal evidence does not universal causality make. Statistics is not absolute, it is relative. Edit to add - rant over, time for une verre du vin sous l'arbre

    Defensive Chefs

Hey now, Nobody wants to be seen as causing a scene while at a restaurant. Here, by confronting him in what appears to be a very hostile manner, the chef forced him to be the center of attention for everyone in the restaurant. I, too, would probably have been embarrassed in this situation. It seems that until the chef came out both the patron and the owner were acting in a very polite manner.
  21. Quick, and without looking it up, how many Starfucks are there around DuPont Circle? I remember first coming to DC in the late 80s to visit when Georgetown was a funky place with second hand stores and dive bars. Now all it really needs to become a mall is a roof over Wisconsin Ave. Tyson's already is a mall and deserves the mall restaurants it gets.
  22. Surprised I didn't see you as I stopped in for a sandwich about 11:20. I'm always amazed at how packed the lot gets at lunch, almost entirely due to the Chipotle. Luckily since I get to work so early, I generally grab a bite at around 11:30, before it gets too bad. If you have a hankering for a sandwich there, stop in at "Tribes Grill" next to Chipotle. Very seldom crowded Eastern Mediterranean place with decent to very good schwarma and gyros.
  23. Alas, my camera was out of order last night, but dinner was- 1)Chinese sausage salad 2)Padd Thai - Bangkok style Wife said they looked very pretty.
  24. Heather, Not exactly sure how far it is for you, but I'm actually a big fan of the new Safeway on Shady Grove (?) just south of Rt 28. It's in the strip mall with the Chipotle, Krispy Kream, Chevy Chase bank etc. By far the nicest Safeway I've ever seen. It's a 5 minute drive from my office and I end up there 3-4 times a week to buy lunch. PS - Coincidentally, there is also a MoCo liquor store next door.
