    Dry Baking

I'm smacking myself now. During the holiday season I had trays of 'icebox cookies' in the showcase. They sold like crazy. Different versions of shortbread would be good. I'm wondering if people would buy meringue cookies? I make them for passover... but for the rest of the year? hmm. ← I thought of meringues after I posted about the shortbread. I was in a patisserie recently near Toronto which sold many varieties of shortbread, and as well as meringue cookies, they sold meringue nests and larger meringue baskets which you could also do, depending on demand.

Shortbread fits the description... I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
  3. Khadija (and other Canadians), Lee Valley Tools sells microplanes. Here's a link to one of the ones they carry. Microplane at Lee Valley It does not have a handle, but is only $13 CDN. You can find others using the search function. Lee Valley also carries a number of other items for kitchens and gardens. Their main web page is HERE

    acorns

When I was in primary school (grade 2? 3?) I remember thinking that the other kids were crazy for eating acorns. Every recess they were out in the school yard like a bunch of squirrels. I think the teachers discouraged it, but the kids kept on eating them.
  5. Wonderful article, Bond Girl!
  6. Like a few others who have posted, I'm not Jewish, but I usually go out for Chinese on Christmas eve with my parents, my brother and his family & in-laws. My Mum decided years ago that Chinese was going to be tradition because she cooked a big Christmas dinner every year, and didn't want to have to do the same thing the day before also. I also have other friends (again, not Jewish) who are planning on Chinese for Christmas day this year, a departure from their usual Mexican (they're not Mexican either!)
  7. Roasted cauliflower - this has become a staple in my house Marshmallows! I just finished making a batch of vanilla, and a batch of coffee flavoured. They are so good!
  8. The entire batch of rum balls (well, Kahlua actually) that were supposed to go home for the holidays. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to make more!
  9. I was wondering that myself, so I went to the Karo website. They do now have a "Karo Corn Syrup with Real Brown Sugar" Click here! I looked at the grocery store yesterday but couldn't find it. I guess it's not out in Canada.
  10. Lemon curd Lemon curd thread here. I've tried (and love) the Fine Cooking recipe.
  11. An entire batch of chocolate chip cookie dough . I did show admirable restraint though - I took (just) over a day to finish it!
  12. I just noticed an article that the state has shut down Sweet Georgia Brown due to unpaid taxes. The doors are reported padlocked, and the contents are to be sold at auction. Article here.
  13. Here's another source, but it looks more expensive than freddurf's source for the same item. Chocosphere
  14. Brilliant! Thank you! I had always wondered how those were done and why they didn't topple over. And now I know the trick Now I just have to gather my courage and try it...
  15. It's 9am the next morning and I'm still full, but comfortably so. That was an absolutely amazing meal, and it was great to be able to put faces to names. Thanks everyone!
  16. You can add my name to the list of sous chefs... or dishwashers if need be!
  17. It's almost warm here in the Great White North, so it's a gin tonic for me tonight.
  18. Sounds like a great event! Count me in for the Saturday, since I just have to drive over from Windsor. Thanks for arranging this!
  19. Gary - Zingerman's sounds great! Unfortunately I usually don't make it past Dearborn (Merchant's Wine) before my wallet becomes suspiciously light. I'll have to make a trip one of these days and remember to stop in Dearborn on my way home! My family usually asks me to go to the US to buy olive oil, balsamic vinegar and chocolate so Zingerman's sounds like it could easily become the favorite. Tammylc - Thanks for the offer! I may take you up on that...
  20. Hi! Me too! Well, actually just a hop across the river in Windsor. I guess that's Detroit's Canadian suburb! I haven't actually made it to Zingerman's yet. It's one of those places that I keep thinking that I have to go to, but forget everytime I'm in Michigan.
  21. I'm solidly in the no blue food camp. I pick out all of the blue M&Ms or Smarties or any other candy that I'm eating. Food (other than a couple of berry or potato types as mentioned above) is not meant to be blue. I don't care for blueberries, so that's just another strike against blue food.
  22. OK - here's mine... The biscuits at Red Lobster - I don't know why or how, but these are soooo good. Kentucky Fried Chicken - Once a year or so I succumb to the power of KFC. So crispy, so greasy, so good! Poutine - Again, only once or twice a year, but so good when do break down and order it!
  23. I ended up using a tackle box like this one: Click! I had originally bought it for sewing supplies, but now I use one stowaway container for tips & couplers, one for food colour (powder & gel) and one for misc. bits and pieces. The storage area at the top of the tackle box is good for bigger things like my spatulas and a roll of disposable piping bags. I can take the box with me if I need to, but it's also fairly easy to throw into storage if I know I won't be using it for a while, since I don't have a lot of room in my apartment.
  24. I love pumpkin pie. Actually, I'll often make the pumpkin custard and bake that in ramekins - no crust to scrape the filling out of!
