If you want to collect some official data, the Lyndhurst Bake Shop and Mazur's Bakery are about 3 blocks from one another...both on Ridge Road in Lyndhurst.

Trust me--just go to Hoboken, park in the big lot between 14th and 15th at Washington, and go to The Jefferson.
-
Glad to hear it! Hopefully they'll get 'em up on the site...

Where's the sheepish smiley? This one ?? SO sorry, Lou! Folks, I can indeed report that a girlfriend and I had lunch at An American Grill (following a way-too-short trip to DePasquale Spa), and my friend ordered aforementioned pear salad for lunch. And she said it was wonderful! I had completely forgotten about the post here until Lou reminded me of it after we were done. Shows you how much that stuck in my brain... We also shared the mozzarella/roasted pepper app and I had the tuna app, which I looooved. And of course, we enjoyed the extra-special Lou treatment, which is always appreciated!

I'm guessing that China 46is the perfect answer...and it's easy off/on the NJ Turnpike as you're headed north! There are 10 pages about the place on that thread, but I know others will agree with me. Edit: No implication that C46 will have congee, but I do think it fits the bill otherwise! to my peeps.

I have an inquiry out for you...will let you know if/when I hear something! Edit: Foodie pal working at RU says she wasn't aware of any, but now she wants me to let HER know about any that you find!

The Italian deli/market near the Gulf station is called Lentina's. It's on the corner of Ridge Road and Ten Eyck Ave, 1-2 blocks south of Kingsland Ave (Pietro's is on the corner of Ridge and Kingsland, fwiw). Lentina's # is 201-531-9077.

I just knew someone had to have started a thread like this already! Great ideas here but since I'm going at the end of August, if any of you have updates (those other threads are at minimum a year old), please keep 'em coming! We're spending two days in Provincetown (not that there's anything wrong with that...) first and the next five in Dennisport, so I'm looking for restaurants as well as great markets, esp in DPort, 'cause I understand that the grill comes with a view of the Sound!
-
Appetizzio's and Michael's are definitely two of them...good call, Pete! I know that Pietro's (shock--also on Ridge) has a small 'market' of Italian products inside as well. I'll keep those coming as I remember/get names, Ghost!
-
Ghost-- A lot closer to home for you are the numerous Italian delis/markets on Ridge Road in Lyndhurst, North Arlington and even on the north end of Kearny! For the life of me, I can't come up with one name at the moment, but I'll try to do a drive-by and at least get a few for you. Fwiw, there is definitely one on the corner before/opposite my favorite cheap gas station (Gulf: 2.23/gal as of yesterday) on your left just past Kingsland Ave as you drive south on Ridge Road...green awning. I'll let you all know if I come up with any names!

You know the exit off of Rt 4W to go to Riverside Square? I think it's the same one I took to go to Fink's, if that helps. Take that, but pass the mall. The Pathmark shopping center is on the right after the mall. Sounds like it's going to be a fun place to try...

Too late now, and I have no clue of what the name is, but I've read about and been told by friends that the Indian restaurant on 46E immediately before the entrance to Willowbrook is great. I know it's a 2-3 store 'strip' mall and iirc, there's a Lone Star Steakhouse (?) next door. There's also River Kwai (Thai) all of a mile or so away in Little Falls... with Applegate Farms next door for dessert!

Wow...some great info here! I knew where to turn... I'm no help in the "what's the definition of a galette?" department, but in my mind, it has always been a loosely made pie with an open top. Then again, what do I know? So here's the thing; this recipe was from Cooking Light, which would explain why they're not including cornstarch (or flour, I'm guessing). I lightly floured the bottom crust before putting the fruit on top of it, but I definitely only used a sprinkle of flour. I like the idea of adding crushed cookies, but I think it would detract from the full fruit, not much sugar added and oh-so-summery flavor! Maybe I'll try some cornstarch next time--can any of you tell me how much? I'm also still interested in knowing if there is any way to get the bottom of the whole thing any browner, which I'm guessing would make it a little sturdier. Should I put it on a rack over a cookie sheet next time? Would the extra air flow help?

Let me start by saying that I am not, not, NOT a baker! But I recently made a peach and blueberry galette recipe that was so ridiculously easy, tasty and elegant that I had to make it for a dinner party I went to tonight. The problem is, there was a ton of juice running out of it this time, and it made for a completely soggy bottom crust! Don't get me wrong; this one still tasted delicious, but it was a floppy mess! The first time I made it, the soggy factor was lower, but still there. So I'm turning to the experts...what's the secret? I can't imagine pre-baking the crust b/c then it wouldn't be malliable enough to fold up around the fruit. I did sprinkle a little bit of flour on the fruit before baking this time, as I had read that would help to keep it from running, but I either need a lot more, or another solution. And I was very careful not to overload the crust, so that wasn't the problem either. I also used a slotted spoon to get the fruit out of the bowl, so I left lots of juice behind even before baking. I'm stumped! Fwiw, the short ingredient list is (in this case, fresh) peaches, blueberries, 1/8 c of turbinado sugar, and a TBSP of heated jam on the open portion of the galette. I used (gulp) a pre-made crust from the dairy aisle (both times). And I baked it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Heeeeeeeeeeelp?

Green Field Churrascaria 450 Hackensack Ave Hackensack NJ Anyone been to this place? I've been invited to a gathering there (disclaimer: by non eG folks), and I've never heard of it! From the directions, it appears to be in one of the strips of stores behind the Pathmark on 17. The invitation was a riot... We're having a meat party! We invite you to come with us to the world's greatest restaurant. It's a Brazilian barbecue; you have a thing on your table that has a red and a green side. If you flip it to green, they bring you meat. Lots and lots of meat. When you can take no more meat, you flip it to red. When you want more meat, you flip it back to green. After an hour or two, you depart, engorged. It's brilliant. And this ain't no crappy meat, either-- they have the best tenderloin I've ever had. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! In addition to the copious meat, they have a regular buffet, and a sushi buffet. That's right, SUSHI BUFFET. So if meat ain't your thing, you will still eat like a king. Or queen. Or some other sort of wealthy, non-elected ruler. Btw, the evening is going to end with Scrabble and mint juleps at their place--so you know I'm going regardless of what you all tell me about the place! But please-DO tell if you have any insight! Thanks! Curlz

What does a city have to do to get some respect?

It really is an amazing store/chain, and well worth a trip if you're in the vicinity of one! Now if we could just get them to open one in northern NJ... -
Anon-- I put in the zip code for River Vale on their product locator, and got three locations within 5 miles of you! Upper Crust (3 miles) 610 North Maple Ave. Hohokus 07423 201-652-8232 Teas' Tea Whole Foods Market (4 miles) Ridgewood Plaza 44 Godwin Place Ridgewood, 07450 201.670.0383 Teas' Tea Heal Thy Self (4 miles) 152 Veterans Drive North Vala, 07647 201.768.7970 Teas' Tea I'm assuming that the entire WF chain carries this; there's also a huge WF in Englewood. Happy shopping... EDIT: I think I meant Edgewater! You know--one of those 'E' towns near the Hudson and the GWB.

That was quite possibly one of your funniest posts ever, Rosie! Fwiw, it has probably been 10 years since I last went to Pal's, and I could have given you the same description of the decor. And from other posts, it sounds like they still have the same group of waitresses...

Melissa, I'm not sure why you're fixated on places like D&D and Balducci's when what you should really be pining for is WEGMANS!!! And, hey--it could happen. They're as far south as VA already! Start the petition... -
One suggestion I'll toss in the mix: freeze whatever you make in batches appropriate to the # of mouths it will feed! I quickly learned that freezing a huge amount of anything wasn't working well b/c after the 3rd meal of ____, I was sick of it! So I started using smaller containers, and voila! Two meals of anything is fine, and then I can move on to something else. Simple solution, but it took a headsmack.

Or better yet, next time try Casa Vasca!! In addition to the food, I just love the neighborhood feel of the place, and they always make us feel welcome. In general, I don't think you're going to find more than the standard fare at most places in the Ironbound, but I don't think that's a bad thing--just the reality of what they are. Adega Grill is a bit 'fancier' in the way they do some of the traditional dishes (i.e., flaming a whole chorizo in a ceramic dish tableside), but in general, the menu is still like most other restaurants 'down neck.' I do think there are a lot of mediocre spots, however--and you certainly hit one last night!
-
Two words: CASA VASCA. Good local place, and they have a parking lot. Terrific sangria, great food; been going there for years. 141 Elm Street 973-465-1350 Two other words, if you want a dressier atmosphere and a slightly more expensive place: Adega Grill. They also have their own parking lot, but it's around the corner (on Madison St, iirc). 130 Ferry Street 973-589-8830
