In times past, it was rude at a dinner party to comment on the food favourably, as it suggested you were more interested in the food than the company- the hight of poor manners. Of course, I wouldn't think of not praising a host for their efforts now, but the point is that I am there to see him or her, not to be impressed by the food. If all someone could manage for me was cheese in a can on crackers, I would still be pleased that they invited me into their home. Not everyone can cook, not everyone can afford costly ingredients. Who am I to judge what their best effort was? Most of my friends are non foodies, and I like their parties as much as those of my more culinary minded aquaintance.

I agree on the spinach and artichoke- tomorrows spinach and chestnuts in a sourdough. Yam fries and shortribs are everywhere. Be-foamed food. Mojitos. Small plates. Fusion spring rolls, ie tuna wrapped in a wonton, etc. Seared ahi. Green tea infused dessert. Raw food. I love all of the above (except, of course, for the raw food), but their ubiquitous nature leads me suspect that they will soon be snickered at by those food cognosceti who actually care about whether something is au courant. The rest of us will still be happily chowing down on those short ribs : )

Upon having eaten a bunch of shrimp from the Quickie Mart at a special 'past its sell date' price: "Vision fading...must eat faster" not an exact quote, but love it.

Jamie, The Only is open now- did it close and then re-open?

Manitoba, 1/2 a block south of East 2nd Avenue. I believe it's the The Argo Cafe. Right around the corner from where I used to work and the source of many an office lunch. Very greasy spoon-esque. Bang on the money if that's what you're looking for Jane. ← thanks Mooshmouse- I only went once, but loved the ambience.

This is one of those etiquette rules that goes back to eras gone- a lot of these type of rules are there to show "non threatening" behaviour. Hands under the table could be seen as being ready to grab a weapon, such as a hidden dagger... For similar reasons, the knife is held downwards at all times, in case it could be seen as a threat.

What is that little house place just off 2nd on Manitoba or Yukon or something? Is it Molly's? I think it qualifies.

Liberty wines is gone? Say it isn't so! I like the Mexican place in the quay. There is a greek place at the bottom of Lonsdale that is pretty good, and Thai house is only 2 Blocks away. There is a dessert place up on 2nd or 3rd on Lonsdale, and Cinnamon's Chocolates also on 2nd or 3rd and Lonsdale.

I totally agree with you Peppyre. I live in False Creek and I think the average resident would be a WF shopper. Fairview Slopes the same. As well, there is alot of "upscaling" going on in Cambie, Mount Pleasant, City Hall neighborhood, above the hospital etc.. The Cambie corridor is becoming a bit of a shopping/cafe destination. Anyway, in my hood there are a hell of a lot of Capers bags in people's hands as they trundle around the park w/ their dogs.
-
It is a like a giant Capers- lots of beautifully presented organic produce, meat and everthing else, plus an inhouse cafe. I find the prices competitive as well. It looks like there will be a new Capers opening up a few blocks on Cambie as well, at the "Olive" development.

Sadly, Grand King is no more. There is another Chinese place in there, but I haven't tried it yet. I think it is Dun Suan or something similar.
-
Ack! I was just there on Friday- Occo Bucco, linguine in Rose a Caprese and a number 10. I am so choked and sad for them. It was a fantastic little place.

Would you consider Main Street as a halfway spot? Lots of good options there.

I have noticed recently a few Taco Del Mar's opening in Vancouver. The most recent one on West Broadway. Anyone tried their fish tacos before? ← Yes- the one I had was basically like a frozen fish stick in a taco. However, everything else I have had there was pretty damn tasty for fast food.

I went there for brunch last Sunday and will definitely be back. Had a frittata with potatoes, spinach, goats cheese and heavenly chorizo. Can't wait to try lunch or dinner. So glad to see a good neighborhood place in this space. It is long overdue. That flatiron looks fantastic. I know what I am having next time I go. Thank you for the pictures, Mooshmouse.

Well, this being Vancouver, you won't get any looks as long as you are not wearing sweatpants. I would say casual with decent shoes. I am to take my mum to the Pan Pacific for the MDB (after repeated murmurings on her part as to how wonderful the Easter brunch was),-brother is absconding to Mexico for a wedding, and my DH has to work, so it will be us and my little guy. The buffet menu does look fabulous, but I know it is going to be like the annual shoe sale at Army and Navy in terms of crowds. It is exactly the same as the Easter menu, only 10 bucks more. I just found out that the Four Seasons is giving out an Hermes Gift Bag to all mums at their brunch- if I could get a reso, that might tempt me to swtich. For non hotels, I keep hearing great things about Adesso- also, I went to Ocean Six Seventeen for brunch on Sunday and loved it. Nice little patio right on the water (although on Sunday there were about 12 dogs in attendance so watch your step) and very reasonable. It will definitely be a new neigborhood hang for me.

Could you get smoked sablefish through customs?
-
Chocolate Arts chocolates? They have those Haida designs.
-
Definitely the Imperial. Beautiful Food, Beautiful View. Mmm. I will have to make a pilgrimage soon. ..
-
Oh Oh. My wallet is going to take a beating.
-
Mooshmouse, I am so glad to hear that about Ocean Six Seventeen! I haven't been yet, but really want to go. I live very close. It has been a bit of a cursed location so far, and I would love to see it succeed. I understand that the Chef used to work under Gord Martin. Can't wait to see your tasting notes! Ann

Monk Mcqueens Sandbar Arts Club Back Stage Lounge, The place in the Granville Island Hotel Can you tell I live in False Creek? Does Malones on Kits Beach count? What about that place by the yacht club as you are driving to Lions Bay? Is that Seafood place that was on an old boat at Lonsdale Quay count? What about that place upstairs at Lonsdale Quay overlooking the Water? And there is a new little place in the space next to Stamps but I can never remember the name. Oh, and lets not forget the Whitespot inside of Science World ; )

And they used to have a fantastic scotch selection if you made through to the early evening. I used to hang out there a lot. I will have to make my way back. I remember the rib dinner being huge and well priced. Alligator was good, and they used to have a salad with pear, stilton and calvados dressing with some kind of nut on it that I used to always have for lunch. I have GOT to get out more. Ann

Seriously though is Cate Simpson not doing Rob Feenies PR anymore?

Does Alka Meats have all organic meat? And where is the Jericho Centre Mall? I noticed that Armando's has organic beef for about 25per pound. What are the prices at Alka like?
