  1. Right area, wrong lake. The original Grotto is at Harvey's Lake, where I caught many a fish as a kid. From Grotto's website: Grotto Pizza & the Grand Slam Sports Bar Rte. 415 • Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania (570) 639-FAST (3278) Description: This is where the legendary taste was introduced to the world in 1953.
  2. If not Chickie's then Sarcone's.
  3. I'm not all that impressed with Yocco's. I've only been to one of their locations (Rt 100, just south of I-78), so maybe the quality varies by location. The hot dogs they use are pretty mediocre, and the chili, while it has decent flavor, has always been dried out.
  4. Is that the same Tacconelli family that operates the store in Port Richmond, or is it like Pat's King of Steaks, where the original store is in the hands of one branch of the family and the franchises are owned by another, and the two don't speak to one another? (I've eaten at one of the franchises--Oliveri Prince of Steaks in the RTM; Herb Oliveri is forbidden from using the name "Pat's" within a (I think) five-mile radius of 9th and Passyunk--and I think it inferior to the orignal Pat's.) The way I understood it, Papa Tacconelli is a one-man show in Port Richmond. ← Without going too Googling mad, I was able to find this write up The 70 year old Philadelphia pizza making institution has crossed the Delaware River and has opened a second location in Maple Shade across from the Moorestown Mall. The pizza oven is from the same manufacturer as the original oven in Philadelphia. That of course does not directly answer the question, nor have I been to the original, but seems to indicate it's not a pretend franchise. Cool Mama Bell also liked it. But we both think Pizza Fresca is pretty close. ← The way I heard it was that there was some sort of falling out between the father and son (or it might be son-in-law), so the younger one moved across the bridge and set up shop across from the mall.

    Herbs

I recently had an heirloom tomato salad with salsa verde . The salsa was basically pesto w/o the cheese--basil, parsley, mint, EVOO, garlic and anchovies (in place of salt). You could probably do the same with your basil/EVOO popsicles after they thaw.
  6. I couldn't resist the Styx pun... I have a bunch of thyme left over after only needing a few tsps for a recipe. Can I freeze the rest, and if so, on the stem or off??
  7. A story about the Jug's "Bald Eagle" wings (the really, really hot ones)--years ago, I see my old neighbor across the bar. A while later, he comes running over to my table, beet red face, sweat pouring from everywhere. He grabs my almost full pitcher of beer and chugs it. I'm wondering what the heck is going on. He then says, "Sorry, I just ate six bald eagles on a dare, then my friends took my beer away. I'll buy you a pitcher before I leave." I'm still waiting for that pitcher.
  8. The one in Voorhees? If that's the one, I'm amazed that it's still open. The food was always good, but the location sucks.
  9. I think Radicchio is the offspring of NJ's Laceno, of which I am a big fan. Two Laceno apps are memorable, but I don't know if they made their way onto the Radicchio menu--shrimp/asparagus/canellini beans served in a radicchio leaf, and smoked mozzarella (slightly melted and browned) over a bed of sauteed mushrooms and radicchio.
  10. Whistlers has damn good baby back ribs, too. Their smoker is a converted ice house, over 100 yrs old, in the parking lot.
  11. And where is their Haddonfield location? I get over there on occasion. ← It's actually in Haddon Twp/Westmont, on Haddon Ave. From the middle of Haddonfield (intersection of Kings Hwy and Haddon Ave), take Haddon Ave toward Collingswood. PJ's is on the left, about a mile down the road. Their other south Jersey locations: Rt 70 in Cherry Hill, Lenola Rd in Maple Shade (across from the Moorestown Mall), Washington Twp (next to the hospital). PJ's wings are pretty good (I like the hot & honey), but the Jughandle Inn's wings are still the best.
  12. Have you considered eating in Collingswood, NJ (I'd recommend Tortilla Press)? You can take the PATCO high speed line into Camden then the Riverlink trolley/train right to the Tweeter Center entrance.
  13. I used a recipe I found by googling "grilled pizza recipe" and I wasn't thrilled with the crust. The next time, I'm going to use the recipe in "American Pie." There's also a grilled pizza article/recipe in August's Cooks Illustrated.
  14. Same here. I can do without the blue/red discussion unless it's, "Which cotton candy flavor is better?"
  15. I'll be in Manhattan for a two day seminar next month. I don't have the schedule yet, but I'm guessing we'll have an hour break for lunch. Is there anywhere within a quick walk of 48th/Broadway that's good, moderately priced, and not a chain or tourist trap? Almost any kind of food is fine--deli, hot dogs, pizza, ethnic (but not Indian), burgers, etc.
  16. Lots of seeds. Here it is: http://huyfong.com/no_frames/garlic.htm
  17. I admire your devotion to such a simple but delicious food. Beer obsession is a good thing, too.
  18. I bought an 18 oz. jar and only needed two tsp. for a peanut sauce recipe. What can I do with the rest of it?
  19. Now that I think about it, the one time I ate lavendar creme brulee, it reminded me of creamy perfume.
  20. I was left wondering why Katie didn't just serve a classic creme brulee, omitting the lavender when she found out that she left lavender off of her mis list.
  21. Where is Pizza Fresca?
  22. Since he'll be at the Swan, wouldn't it be easier to take the boat (or walk) to MGM then take a bus to AKL from MGM?
