  1. Starve a fever, feed a cold. A high fever usually causes the contagious one to become nauseous, so you shouldn't eat anything with a fever. You should keep hydrated though, sipping clear liquids. Flat soda (gingerale, 7-up) is best. Juice pops and ice pops are good too. You don't want to be spewing anything with chunks, or have to clean it up, I might add. Can you tell I have kids? For a cold, here is a recipe from Epicurious for ginger tea. It's a nice sipping tea, and it is soothing to drink when you have a cold. When I was a kid with a sore throat and coughing, my mother would squeeze 4 or 5 fresh lemons and add honey to taste. She'd put it in a container and keep in the fridge. I would be given a dose of 1 or 2 tablespoons when needed. I always thought my throat felt better after I had some . I have been doing that with my three kids as well. My fourteen year old son, who loves anything spicy and/or sour, has always loved to take this when he's sick and even when he's well. He thinks this is a great little treat, and says he feels better after he takes some too. Now that I'm a grown up, I like to medicate myself with shots of Sambucca when I have a cold. Natch on the chicken soup. When I'm making it for a "sickie", I add a couple of slices of ginger root and a lot of garlic with everything else, strain all those cooked vegetables and herbs out of the broth. I've found that adding acini di pepe to the soup is easier for the "invalid" to swallow. Noodles are too big and Pastina is just too small. Hope everyone afflicted, feels better soon.
  2. On Nigella.com she says about this cake~ "It tastes like on of those sponges you drench, while cooling, with syrup, only you don't have to. This is the easiest cake I know". I've wanted to make this cake for quite a long time. Ever since I saw her make it on Nigella Bites. The last crate of clementines I bought at Christmas is not moving as fast as the first 4 crates I bought. I think the kids have had their fill. (I couldn't pass up that last crate for $2.99 at Shoprite) Since you made this, please tell me how many cups of nuts you used. The recipe calls for 2 1/3 Cup of ground almonds. Just how many chopped almonds should I buy to get this amount of ground almonds? I'm not sure of the Cups? pounds? before I grind and process. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I would appreciate your help. I want to make this for New Years day.
  3. Is that right? Costco in Japan? Small world. Happy New Year! Looking forward to your blog.
  4. Mr. Bourdain will be missed. FoodNetwork keeps coming up with new ideas though. Dweezil Zappa and Lisa Loeb will have a show in January. Here's some of the press~ Dweezil and Lisa with guest Bob Taylor with guest Jessica Simpson

  6. Maybe Chik needs to work on the restauranteur "schmooze". On Seinfeld they still lined up for the Soup Nazi. No soup for you!!!!Step aside!!!!!
  7. Molesting aside~ It's been years since I've seen one of his shows. What I remember is Jeff Smith annoying the hell out of me when he would always say, "I wish you could smell the ODOR of this". Odor, to me, conjures up something foul and offending. So, no matter what he was cooking, I dismissed him, since he didn't know the difference between Odor and Aroma, when it comes to food. I still watched the show though, since there were very few cooking shows on TV. And I remember him talking about the wife, and the aubergine colored dress that made her look so sexy.
  8. Regarding those glue traps~~ ~~Someone told me that the little buggers will gnaw off their own limbs to escape them.
  9. You are taking the situation quite well. I'd set the traps, or you're going to have to live with them. This spring I took my car to be worked on. I found out I had a Mama mouse and 4 babies living under ther hood of my car. She had made a whole nest in there out of soft things she found in my garage, where the car is always parked. The mechanic wanted to stab them with a really big screwdriver I asked him not to. He "poked" at them instead and took the 'stuffing" out. Then he took the car for a ride. When he got back they were gone. He told me it's not unusual for mice to do that when a car is parked in the garage. And they often do damage by gnawing at the hoses and wires. I'm going to keep a better watch this winter on who's living in the garage and under my car hood! I hope your "boarder" isn't doing any damage to your stove/oven.
