  1. Just remember to pick the meat off the bones as soon as it is cooked, or it'll be flavorless mush. About 40 minutes into the simmering if you are using whole chickens or parts. Probably 10-15 minutes into the simmering if you are using carcasses or bones where most of the meat was already removed.
  2. FYI - the traveler in question went to An American Grill, but he didn't say hello to Lou. He had some comments regarding the food, which I'll forward to Lou anonymously for him. What struck me as weird is that we sent him to An American Grill specifically because there'd be a friendly face to make sure he was taken care of at a later hour. If you aren't going to take advantage of that, well, you figure out the rest.
  3. .... What about NJ blueberries, tomatoes, and corn? What about the rising status of NJ wineries? ....If the point of the show is to identify unique culinary experiences than cannot be duplicated at the same level anywhere else in the world, and the best they could come up with for NJ is a go-go bar and a sub sandwich, I'd say someone didn't do enough research! ← While I agree with a lot of what you just said, he did to a nice segment at Bobolink Dairy discussing farming, cows, cheese and bread. And, the episode was shot in the winter, so blueberries and tomatoes would be a little hard to check out. He went skiing at Vernon Valley Great Gorge, er I mean Mountain Creek, also.
  4. My direction link above is from the hotel to the restaurant (actually, I just tested the link, it's weird, it gave slightly different directions that time. The address is 246 State Route 10 West in Randolph, it's right on the highway). If you're going to An American Grill directly from the airport you take 78 West to 24 West to 287 North to 10 West. An American Grill is about 7 miles up Rt 10, on the right, immediately after Curley Stone Co.
  5. From Nizza's friend (via email): Address: 909 Parsippany Blvd. Since it is RIGHT off 287, the 78-24-287 route actually does make a lot of sense (according to mapquest (24.98 miles, 30 minutes), but yahoo counters with 280-80-46 (22.6 miles, 39 minutes). Oy, I'm so confused. So, you could go with many of the recommendations above. re: An American Grill, it is a great place and it always is nice to have that personal connection... here's a link to driving directions to Lou's place (9.8 miles from hotel, 16 minutes) (note to Lou - FYI - mapquest seems to thing you're on 10 East, so I used the link to yahoo, which correctly realizes you are on 10 West. You may want to send in an email to mapquest to correct them.)
  6. nizza, you've sparked an interesting debate. I'm sorry, but we simply must know which hotel the guy is staying at! And, what are his real priorities? Eating as soon as possible after landing or a short drive after dinner? Type of cuisine, too. Get back to us. - NJ
  7. I made the Blueberry Muffins from the recipe in the Baking with the CIA cookbook. All butter, and very simple version. The cake part was excellent. Highly recommended. If you don't have the book, you could probably check it out at your local library.
  8. This sounds like something you may have to make yourself. I've never even seen that at a big County fair (like Sussex or Orange County (NY).
  9. How did I know? Jason is NOT SHY about asking for the manager/owner and grilling them all about the place. BTW - he had Vietnamese for lunch, in case anyone was wondering, he said he had an excellent Pho. What will today bring?
  10. (It's an '87 Cadillac Brougham) If you think what you see on the website is disturbing, I can't tell you how pissed I was about the segment down the shore. I won't say anything more right now, but this thread is gonna take off after the NJ episode airs. Unfortunately, I didn't get the NJ tape until after the interview, and he's currently still in Uzbekistan, so I couldn't really get in any more follow-up questions. However, the Asian invasion segment is very good: he goes shopping at Mitsuwa and to a Korean restaurant with a knowledgable Korean-American woman. The part with Mario was good too, tape an extra minute longer to be sure you don't miss the ending (including the credits).
  11. Unlike the above, I'm trying to think of places that aren't out of his way. I mean, Montclair is nice and all, but he better get a GPS unit to find his way from the airport to the restaurant then to the hotel. American Grill is great too, but hardly in between the airport and hotel. Although if Lou is gonna take care of the guy, it may be worth going out of his way. Two of our favorite Chinese places are in Parsippany on Route 46: Noodle Chu (Chinatown style Cantonese) 770 US Highway 46, Parsippany, NJ 07054 Phone: (973) 299-6518 and Hunan Noodle House (specializes in house made noodles) 1551 US Highway 46, Parsippany, NJ 07054 Phone: (973) 263-8855 also (I think he'd be passing and at most would have to make a u-turn): Hunan Cottage (one of mine and Rosie's favorite) 14 US Highway 46, Fairfield, NJ 07004 Phone: (973) 808-8328 I can call later to see how late they are open, if he's interested in Chinese. Harold's NY Deli (for an enormous sandwich) 707 US Highway 46, Parsippany, NJ 07054 Phone: (973) 335-3339 Hmm, looking at mapquest, it suggests you take Routes 78 to 24 to 287 to Parsippany (it may help if we knew where he's staying). So, thinking of places along that route (not far off the highways, there's nothing commercial on those highways, unlike Rt 46): Basilico (very nice Italian, I haven't been, but it's highly recommended around here) 324 Millburn Ave, Millburn, NJ 07041 Phone: (973) 379-7020 Khun Thai (ditto, but Thai) 504 Millburn Ave Short Hills 973-258-0586 New Main Taste (Thai, more refined) 225 Main St, Chatham, NJ 07928 Phone: (973) 635-7333 Cinque Figlie Restaurant (Italian, one of my favorites) 302 Whippany Rd, Whippany, NJ 07981 Phone: (973) 560-0545 It's a too early for me to start calling, but most places seat until at least 9:30. Let me know if he's interested in any of these and I'll check for you.
  12. Just as a heads up to everyone, Tony is still in Uzbekistan. Feel free to post your inquiries, but it may take a little while for him to get back to us.
  13. We had one in East Brunswick Mall Too.. I remember a huge huge going on when it was someones birthday.. Sparlkers, sirens, lots of yelling.. ← That's where we had my, um, 6th (?) birthday party. I loved Farrell's.
  14. I'm sure you made Jason's trip with that Nationwide recommendation, Grub. I'll bet we see cell-phone pics here by tomorrow.
  15. I'd let the wasabi powder steep in the dairy for a while before freezing it. That will release more of flavor than resting after freezing.
  16. Come on! You have to post some pictures!!! Please?
  17. Of those four, the only one I could stand was the Coke. The pink one was a sour watermelon that was just way too sour and sweet. The orange one was some kind of Hawaiian punch flavor, that just tasted sweet with no actual flavor. That icky beige one is Mountain Dew. I hardly ever have Slurpees, when I do, I like to mix the Coke and Cherry if possible. But, mostly, I think I've outgrown them. I'd much rather have a snow cone with a good fruit syrup.
  18. If they want people to pay attention to how the cake actually tastes, they could have slices boxed for people to take home with them. They might pay more attention to it the next day.
  19. FYI - they are about 4-6 weeks away from opening their new dining room.
  20. These posts were in another Arthur Avenue thread, and I thought they should be added to a thread devoted to Roberto's.
  21. I hope you let us know who you picked after the party and tell us how they did.
  22. Actually, I have seen the commercial for Coke Zero, only I didn't realize it was for Coke Zero at the time, just thought it was for Coke. Anyway, it's a varient on the "I'd like to teach the world to sing.... I'd like to buy the world a Coke" song,* now it's "I'd like to teach the world to chill.... I'd like to buy the world a Coke and chill with it a while." The young, hip, er "chill" singers are holding Coke Zero bottles. You can see the commercial via the Coke Zero website. Click "Chilltop" then "commercial." You can even download the song as a cell phone ringtone. * You can also watch the original 1971 commercial, click Hilltop.
  23. Jason, we have been to the Country Pancake House a couple of times, a few years ago, reminder link. I think we did love the food, and the prices were reasonable, it's just that it always seems to have a long wait to be seated. But, I am very happy about the new Original Pancake House, which we originally discovered in Florida. Their buttermilk pancakes are fermented yeast pancakes, btw. We didn't have any last night (I happened to make blueberry pancakes for brunch yesterday), but both of our dishes came with potato pancakes, which are the thin, finely ground, lacy kind.
  24. Our town had it's Independence Day celebration last night. We do it up right, with live music and free goodies for the kids (glow stick necklaces), and adults (cold drinks, popsicles & ice cream sandwiches - OK, those are probably for the kids too ). A lot of people show up early to picnic on the grounds of the middle school, where the fireworks display will be after sunset. We arrived at 6:45 with our friends and were among the first to arrive, but we had a lot of picnic-ing to do! The Menu Appetizers Cape Cod Potato Chips Bing Cherries Watermelon Mains Cold Fried Chicken, not homemade, but from a new local place The Sangweech Sides Coleslaw (Fairway Market, NYC) Marinated Button Mushrooms (Fairway) German Potato Salad (homemade) Fiesta Corn Salad (homemade) Confetti Macaroni Salad (homemade) Sliced Cucumber and Onion Salad (homemade) Cherry Tomatoes, organic Dessert Blueberry Pie (homemade by our friend) with Cool Whip Watermelon Bing Cherries Drinks Iced Tea (homemade with honey and a little U-Bet Cherry Syrup, I brought a gallon and we drunk about half) Sodas India Pale Ale Some Pics
  25. If you are having a 4th of July Celebration and want to serve Deviled Eggs, ShopRite is having a sale on medium sized eggs, 3 dozen for $1. I like using smaller eggs for Deviled Eggs, they are a less filling hors d'oevres that way. For more about hard cooked eggs, click here for the eGCI course.
