Yikes! We were there last week for a late lunch/early dinner (around 4 PM on Wednesday). The dining room was empty, as would be expected at that hour. But, our waitress, surprisingly, said the full menu was available (that's never been the case any other time I'd been there). I had the chicken fricasee (I usually have the ropa vieja, and wanted something else), while Jason had his usual Cubano. We also had some empanadillas and maduros, coffee and bread pudding (pudin de pan). All the food was up to par, including the rice & black beans. Also, they have more sodas than Coke or Diet Coke. She brings a glass of ice to your table, and you can go directly to the case up front to choose your beverage. It is possible that your server's limited English restricted what they offered you. Also, Jason's Cuban-accented Spanish might influence our service. Frankly, I don't know what their busy time is. We have been there for dinner when the restaurant is about half-full. I would think it might be more fully occupied on Friday & Saturday, especially later in the evening, with Cuban ex-pats. However, at that hour, they are more likely to not have everything on the menu. I hope she can survive in her larger location, the small takeout place was always jammed, with four always-occupied tables as well as people waiting for their take out.

Probably why I couldn't think of the name, and since I've never been there. But, it does have outside seating. Although, if I were going to Harmes and wanted outdoor seating, I'd walk the 50 yards to Thai Chef.
-
What's the name of that place next to the Harmes Theater in Englewood? They have outdoor seating.

Rosie's already edited some into her list, like Assembly and (your favorite?) Cafe Angelique.
-
I finished my edit of the list, so I've updated my post above. Several markets changed days or locations or time, so check the list before heading to your regular Farmers Market. And, once again, if you find an error or have an update or know about a town not listed, please post.
-
I spoke with Montclair. Walnut is correct.
-
I went through the USDA site for the list above, now I'm going through the NJ site, and there are discrepancies (for example, Millburn is now on Tuesdays, but only one site had the correct info, for others the times or locations have been wrong). However, they have each been wrong, so no comment on which is better. I've been calling the towns where I've found discrepancies between the two lists, so they can contact the appropriate website to update their info. If anyone finds that the info we have on our list above is wrong, please let me know so I can update it.
-
According to the USDA website, Rivervale starts in July. I have a call into the town to confirm a start date. More than half the markets start in July. Edit: According to the NJ website, River Vale begins July 7th. Oh! and they just called me back, so that confirms it. Is it Rivervale or River Vale? I see it both ways on the various websites.

OK, I removed the info from my post above because I just compared it ot the current usda link (in Rosie's first post, above) and updated it. This was the list, updated as of Jul 20 2004, from last year. Anyone know of any changes? We'll update it then add it to the first post above, for easy reference.

Well, we got there at 11:45 and the place was almost full. There's a larger table to the left where some singles (friends?) were sharing a table and asked us to join them, but we were expecting two more people and there were only two seats left at that table. Thankfully, a couple at a four-top moved over to the shared table so we could have the four-top. Very nice of them. So, I would say get there by 11:30 AM.

I've added captions to Jason's food pics, above.

That barbecue shrimp po-boy was one of the best things we ate on our trip. Definitely worth the drive, the trouble finding parking and the wait for a table!
-
To add to your list: Assembly, Englewood Cliffs Thai Chef, Englewood Cafe Angelique, Tenafly Panevino, Rt 10, Livingston
-
Must be an in store special. Not on sale on the online shopping list. (which is your local store?)
-
Yes. You should have waited out the crowd and gotten your burgers to go. Then go sit by the river out back to eat them.
-
Or, just buy a bag or two of ice when you hit the local liquor store.
-
I've noticed a running theme on that show that country/rural/poorer mom is usually the more adaptive and accepted than the city/sophisticated/affluent mom. It can't all be editing, can it?
-
I didn't see the episode. Could you give us a synopsis? What did the Thibodaux mom cook for her foster family in San Diego? Or, wasn't the rest of the family Vegan? What did the Vegan San Diego mom eat in Thibodaux? Did she try to make her foster family eat Vegan while she was there? Also, I agree with you that extreme vegetarianism is only possible in an affluent community. But there are exceptions, like in India, where there are some Vegan sects, despite the poverty of their region.
-
Did Maywood ever expand their seating area? I know he was talking about adding a dining room a couple years ago.
-
It seems OK, I guess. I don't buy a lot of fish (Jason doesn't like most fish), but when I do, it's usually at Han Ah Reum. The fish at the Englewood ShopRite is mostly pre-wrapped, they do have kosher fish (wrapped) at the fresh fish counter. As for the lobster, see my post above, click, for more details about SR's occasional lobster-fest. I steam them in seasoned water, about 1-2 inches at the bottom of my 16 quart stock pot. When I get these big ones only one at a time fits in there. Tonight we'll be having them with corn (12 for $1.99) and coleslaw. Another lady at the store said she didn't want to buy the large lobsters because last time they were tough. She had the store cook them. Well, duh. I don't do that -- kill'm yourself!
-
Big Lobsters on Sale at Shop Rite. 3+ pounders for $5.99/lb. But they only had 4.5+. Guess what we're having for dinner tonight?
-
This one, or better yet, this one of a bunch of the pitmasters is great. I love the series of pics of people biting sausage, and both seemed to catch the same guy passed out OD'd on 'cue.
-
I find they're better primarily because you can allow them to ripen fully on the vine and you can eat them while still warm from the sun. You can't even get them at farmers markets that fresh and ripe.
-
OK, now that we've established that food festivals and the like are to be listed on the eGS Calendar (send me a PM if you have something you'd like to have listed), and further brought to the attention of NJ forum visitors by a thread that I will use as a NJ event index (coming soon), I am locking this thread. Any further policy questions should be addressed via PM. Thank you for your attention and input.
