Jaymes - what you described above (the meat being cooked on a slotted grill) sounds different from what we've experienced as Mongolian BBQ. Actually, it sounds similar to Korean BBQ. The Mongolian BBQ is cooked on a large flat round griddle about 4' in diameter. The cook puts your raw ingredients on the griddle and maniputlates it around the griddle with extra long chopsticks while walking around the circle once or twice, adding sauce as he goes. When going to either type of restaurant, I always watch to make sure the cooked food is served in a clean bowl (not the one in which you gave him the raw food) to avoid cross contamination. Another note about Khan's. We appreciated the cilantro on the veggie bar which other places we've been to have not provided. Also, the ginger was not the finely minced jarred type, but was julienned and seemed to be fresh. We occasionally go to the Oriental Grill at the Bergen Mall on Rt 4, but this place is way better and about the same drive for us. I look forward to returning even if we aren't planning on going to the mall.

Just to update... The electrical is done, painting this week. Various punch list items to complete. And, unfortunately, the Garland stove has a small gas leak in one of the burners. Charlie thinks it is a fault in the turn off knob (like it's not turning far enough to turn it off), so we have to deal with servicing that before being able to really cook. But after it's painted I should be able to start moving stuff back in. The kitchen is so close to being completed I'm waiting on additional pictures until it's done then I'll post a new album. For those keeping track, it's been four months. Just like several people predicted it took twice as long as expected. There are several factors that went into the renovation taking so long. We are dealing with EXPO, discussing possible partial reimbursement, and I want to complete that offline before I make any additional comments about it here.

Great comments, Hank. Sounds like a place we should try. On another note - may I kindly ask that when anyone is starting a thread about a restaurant, it would be appreciated if they did a search for said restaurant first. Instead of starting a new topic this post could have been added to either of the other two threads about Zarole that already exist. This would hopefully consolidate all comments about a restaurant in one place.

Forums are spun off when there are both enough posts to support them and an appropriate coordinator is found. If you know of someone who would be an appropriate site coordinator, be sure to introduce them to eGullet without mentioning the possibility of them becoming a site coordinator. One of the criteria is that they are already active site participants before being asked to moderate a forum.

I last bought it at my local Shop Rite. I poured it into a 16 oz Corian dish and heated it on the top rack of our grill last time we made dogs. Along with saurkraut and some chili in other dishes, it was our own little hot dog stand.

I laughed till I cried and nearly peed my pants! Sounds incredibly like a Tom & Jerry cartoon (the ones with the bulldog). Did I mention that Bailey came into the house a couple weeks ago with another mouse? Eek. Got him outside and made him drop it. It was shortly after we came back from vacation. Everytime we go on vacation the mice take up residence in our backyard only to be killed by dog or lawnmower upon our return.

My mom called this morning and asked me how the lunch went. I forgot we rescheduled it and thought I forgot about it. Rechecking, I am now reminded that the date was changed. But has anyone confirmed when exactly? When it is finally settled upon, the organizer (that was lreda, right?), should post a reminder a couple days before to keep the thread at the top of the forum.

Let me loudly second that. Worst "tummy upset" ever was this past summer from an unwashed watermelon. Doesn't matter that you are only eating the inside, the knife touches the outside of the rind before the flesh. Now I scrub all melons with a brush and anti-bacterial dish soap.

This thread is the best example ever of what eGullet is all about! Can't wait to see pictures of both cakes!

I think ChefJeff specifically mentioned wanting "to try them out before buying." Of course after trying them out there's nothing wrong with buying them online.

All I can say is Wow! And many, many, many thanks to new eGullet member Beachcove for recommending Tapas de Espana to us in another thread. Jason & I met Rosie & Lowell there last night. We had one of the most delicious Spanish meals any of us had had in a long time (and we are all frequent Ironbound goers). We were very impressed with the fabulous food and friendly service and definitely plan many return visits. As the name implies, the menu features a large assortment of tapas. These are small plates of food meant to be consumed with drinks. The plates aren’t so small, however, and two or three could easily be an entire dinner for one person. We ordered a decent assortment of tapas, including: - Tortilla Española (Spanish omelet with potato, onions, ham, red pepper) made fresh and served hot, really good. - Jamon Serrano (Serrano ham) - Tabla de Queso Mixto (Spanish cheese sampler including Cabrales, Mahon, Tetilla and Manchego) the semi-soft Mahon was my favorite, Jason threw non-dairy caution to the wind and relished the Cabrales. - Gambas Al Ajillo (Shrimp Sauteed in garlic sauce) only one of the best versions I’ve ever had! - Calamar a La Plancha (Grilled calamari) a little spicy and so tender. - Chorizo Salteado con Cebolla (Spanish sausage sauteed w/onions) I’m generally not a big Chorizo fan, but this was amazing, the onions really add something. - Sardinas a La Plancha (Grilled sardines) ordered after reading the rave in the Bergen Record review (from 2000, I can't find it online), but Lowell seemed to enjoy them more than I did. - Papas Fritas (Fried Potatoes) the only true disappointment, they weren’t really the Spanish Potatoes we were expecting, much too thin, like potato chips. Next time we’ll get the spicy or garlic potatoes. The tapas are listed in three different places: the tapas list, which is a separate laminated page from the regular menu; the appetizer section of the regular menu; and in the specials menu which is in a separate leather bound menu (entrees on the left, tapas on the right). Be sure to examine all three before you order. They range in price from $6-11 each, with most around $7. Also, only order a few at a time. There wasn't enough room on the table for all we ordered. I recommend ordering two or three and when they arrive order your next round. In addition to the tapas, our meal was preceded by a bowl of their soup of the day. Yesterday, it was Cream of Asparagus, which was very good, rich with chicken broth and fresh asparagus flavor, while being light on the cream and not too thick. I assume this complimentary starter changes daily like at most Spanish restaurants. After all the tapas our one main dish arrived, Arroz con Pollo (Chicken in saffron rice) at steal at $11.95. Jason wanted something simple, which this was and wasn’t. It was served in a paella pan about a foot in diameter. The chicken pieces were on the bone and tender, but the star was the rice, Rosie and I just couldn’t stop eating it. I described it last night as a chicken paella and was definitely, to repeat myself, the best arroz con pollo I’ve ever had. We had arrived just before 8PM on Friday night, and the place was already jumping. The dining room was about ¾ full and the bar was just starting to get crowded. As mentioned in the thread linked above, the bar is beautiful but it is also the smoking section. Fortunately the dining room is non-smoking and it was welcome. By the time we left a couple hours later, the place was packed and the music was pulsing. Alas, we missed the flamenco dancers and live music that I see on their website (linked below) arrive after 10PM on Friday nights. We had a reservation which I would definitely recommend; I saw them turn away a couple without one when we arrived. The parking is also an issue, I lucked out and got a spot right across the street, Rosie and Lowell were about 4 blocks away. If you do park at a meter, be sure to feed it through 9 PM, we could see the meter reader writing tickets through the window. However, this is definitely one restaurant that is worth the extra effort. Although already dangerously full, we felt we had to at least sample their desserts. We ordered one regular flan and one special, guava, flan. The regular flan was the eggy version, which Rosie particularly enjoyed. Jason and I preferred the creamier texture of the lightly flavored guava flan. We had also ordered a pitcher of red sangria. Here’s I go again, it was the best Sangria I’d ever had. Quite fruity and boozy, you could really taste the brandy. Even the bill was a pleasure; it was almost exactly $100 with tax. After the tip we got out of there for under $30 per person! Of course it would be more if we ordered less tapas and more main dishes, and we probably would have left with lunch for today. Oh well, as it is I left wanting to return again and again. Tapas de España 7909 Bergenline Avenue North Bergen, NJ 07047 (201) 453-1690 Edit: The bread was really fabulous, too. Very crusty on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. :gushing:

One last suggestion, when was the last time you calibrated your oven temperature? Maybe it's running hot.

OK, I reread it. From your own link there, it appears that calling the cold turkey/ham/swiss/coleslaw sandwich a Rachel may be a midwest thing, I've certainly never seen it on a menu in the tri-state area. I've added a post to the Sloppy Joe thread (see page 3) validating my calling a club version of a Rachel a Sloppy Joe.
-
Yes...I tried to point that out on the Sloppy Joe thread (the irony of Rachel not knowing what a "Rachel" is...) but, alas, I guess the thread had disintegrated by then! I'll have to go re-read that thread...

pnapoli - if you are interested in reading about our obsession with Weebl & Bob, check out this thread, starting on Page 2, with a post by jhlurie on Sep 25 2002, 10:02 AM.

Thanks for the followup. I think it would be great if you posted something similar on the South forum (maybe linking it to this thread).

I thought Rosengarten was crazy with that one, too. I love your Barbereuben. I've never heard of a Rachel as a sandwich before - sounds like what I was calling a Sloppy Joe on another thread (ala the late Short Hills Deli).

Butcher recommendation in Northern NJ
Rachel Perlow replied to a topic in New Jersey: Cooking & Baking
Yes, about a 1/4 mile off Rt 10's west bound lane in East Hanover. -
From FG's first installment it sounds like our popcorn popper would do a similar job to his current model.

I just noticed Suvir changed his avatar. Yeah! No more cut off head. -
Did they say if it was going to be located out of/near the factory on Dean? I finally saw the trucks just the other day.
