  1. That must be quite a commute from Seattle... Just looked at your Myspace page. Judging from the picture, you helped us today (right after you opened at 11). Next time I'm in, I'll be sure to say hello...
  2. Fleisher's just opened that store a few months ago. Before they only had the Kingston store. They specialize in locally grown, grass fed beef, as well as heritage pork and local chickens. In addition they have a wonderful cheese case with NY State cheeses. Add to all that different artisinal sauces, condiments, spice rubs, and some local produce, Fleisher's is a welcome addition to my local shopping circuit. People are raving about their rottisserie chickens too. And the t-shirts are hilarious.
  3. Is anyone familiar with current BYOB policies. While I have read in the past that they were open to BYOB (with corkage of course), I just want to make sure that they are still open to it....
  4. I just snip the leaves into hot water. Tastes super great.
  5. Whoa!! Don't go dragging vanilla into the argument. Vanilla is good shit! My wife didnt eat red meat when I first met her. Turns out her mother was a horrible cook, so she was never exposed to good red meat. Now she craves it nearly as much as I do. She still isnt as adventurous as I am, but she is definately much better than she was.
  6. Staying at the Beekman I assume. For terrific pastries, go across the street to Calico. And, while I wouldn't eat dinner there, Terrapin offers decent drinks and bar food in their bar area. While you're in Hudson, take time before or after Swoon to stroll around and shop. There are a lot of antique shops and galleries worth walking through. Have fun!
  7. In Rhinebeck, le Petit Bistro has revamped their winelist. The food is solid bistro fare, nothing fancy but good. For something a little more complex, head to Hudson and Swoon Kitchenbar. It's about 20 minutes north on Rt 9G. They were just reviewed in the Times, so it may be a little difficult to get in on the weekend. See Swoon Review here Gigi is still nice for a casual italian meal in an energetic environment. Up in Red Hook, Mercato Tavolio is doing great things with a new menu everyday. For people who remember Mercato as a sandwich shop, it has changed. They took over the space on Market Street where Luna used to be. They now serve a full dinner accompanied by well chosen Italian wines. Definately worth a trip. Don't bother with Terrapin. It's a beautiful space but the food is lousy. Savory items are too sweet and make me think of early 90's cuisine. Hope this helps
  8. I love the idea. When I used to order coffee online, Peet's seemed to have the freshest. Nothing compares to home roasting though. Come to the dark side...
  9. I used to work at a terrific French Bistro, where the French owner used to always eat his cheese and pate off of his knife. Ever since then, I felt it was ok for me to do it. Call me uncouth, but I love it...
  10. Khadija, I'm in your camp. While some cheeses with other stuff in them might be tasty, I usually steer clear of them. We have a purveyor at our Sunday farmers market that is always putting stuff in his cheese...grapes, peppercorns, peppers, sundried tomatoes. No thank you. Some cheese that have a tradition of having things added to them (blues, morbier, the scrumptious truffled cheeses) work fine for me. Sticking jalapenos into cheddar is heresy.
  11. The shells crack just as easily as any other nut. The problem is getting the meat liberated from the shell. It adheres to the shell and breaks apart when you try to pull it out, as opposed to regular nuts which seem to spring out of their shells in one piece...
  12. We have been blessed with many Shagbark Hickory trees on our property. Yesterday, I finally grabbed a couple of the nuts and bashed them open with a hammer. The delicious meat inside was a real treat....fatty, sweet, without being at all bitter...very pecan-like. The only problem with these treats is that they are a real pain to liberate from the shell. Anyone else enjoy these (free) nuts? Any hints on shelling?
  13. Wow, just finished reading this long thread. There's an hour I'll never get back. Things I learned from this post. 1) Sugar is addictive 2) Sugar is not addictive 3) HFCS soda tastes worse than cane sweetened soda 4) Never argue with someone who has access to Google Eat less sugar. Sugar can cause cravings for more sugar. Eating too much sugar can make you fat. Americans eat too much sugar. In the immortal words of the homeless man trying out for the job of Rickshaw Boy in a Seinfeld episode "The Government!!!" Thanks homeless dude...

    Home Roasting

I've been roasting for about three years now...better selection, lower prices, and the ultimate in freshness...there is no downside.
  15. A couple of spoonfuls of vanilla bean ice cream does it...
  16. A buddy of mine once bought a "family pack" of filet mignon steaks. He was taken in by the low low price. When he got home and cooked them up, he realized he should have read the label on the package. Top Round Steaks (aka the toughest steak ever) I agree with the above poster. Campari, while one of my favorite drinks, is very deceiving. Looks like it should taste completely different..
  17. I get that a lot too...weird ← I once had a customer at the store where I used to work ask me if we carried "the tool bartenders use to get the little pieces of ice on the top of martinis." ← I was watching a "reality" show on Bravo today. It's a show that is a "behind the scenes" look of a resort in Palm Springs (The Parker is what I think it's called).. Anyway, in the episode I saw, a high profile travel agent was there doing a tour/inspection of the property. She was having dinner at one of the restaurants and the hotel and RAVED to the bartender about how her drink had a lot of ice chips floating on top. This is an "expert" that is guiding people as to what is good service and not good service. what the hell?? ← Maybe it was a margarita...
  18. My wife's friend invited us over for an evening of dinner and games. Sounded like fun. When we got there, we started with some drinks and started playing Pictionary. As the night wore on and we grew hungrier, we came to the realization that they weren't making us dinner, and had already eaten with their children beforehand. We stopped at Wendy's on the way home for the most delicious fast food we had ever eaten...
  19. I'm sure there are people with the exact opposite view here, complaining that the server takes their glass before they are fully finished and the ice cubes have been vacuumed clean. I, on the other hand, like to drink enough that I don't care whether I am finished or not...
  20. Ok, maybe it wasnt a hoax... Click me This is like watching a tennis match...
  21. I saw this concept on tv once. I thought it was pretty neat idea. They had table service, full bar. I like it. In Barrington, IL, there was a theater and sandwich shop in the same building. People were encouraged to bring their sandwiches and snacks into the theater, which was connected to the shop with a door between them.
  22. OF course, but too much water is no good...
  23. I never thought it made much of a difference between shaking and stirring. Then, a couple of years ago, the old bartender mixing my gimlet pulled out the spoon and gave it a good vigorous stir. Best cocktail of my life. Since then I have been stirring my drinks at home, and find that they are in fact better. I very rarely see bartenders stirring drink. Last night I had two lousy martinis, watery with bits of ice in them. I wanted to tell the youngster behind the bar to stir my drink, but didnt want to seem like a pain in the ass snob. How do we feel about stirring vs. shaking?
  24. Well, it turns out that the whole thing was staged. The guy who did the "reporting" has been detained by Chinese police...
