  1. Pepsi One gets my vote for diet colas, but overall I'm mad about Canada Dry Diet Ginger Ale. Crisp, not sweet, refreshing.

    Shake Shack

    I'm happy with the dogs (Taxi, for me with mustard). The custard was disappointing. The chocolate has the barest taste of chocolate, the vanilla was better, but not really satisfying. The chocolate sprinkles were so few in number I would have rather had none. I prefer Custard Beach for custard.

    Green Bean Recipes

    Blanched then pickled with onion, dill, garlic and a touch of hot pepper. Keeps in the fridge for a couple of weeks, although they never last more than a couple of days.
  5. Gourmet because I came across it as a kid, about 11, back in the early sixties. Spent part of my allowance on it every month, in the one store in town that I knew carried it. It was very different then, fewer ads, less photos. I devoured the articles, columns, food, wine, travel. Leslie Chateris' Along the Boulevards was my favorite, I think. I still recall many of the articles (including a very romatic piece by a USNA grad who detailed his marriage proposal to his girl at a hotel well out of his price range, with the generousity and connivance of the hotel staff. I've reread that one a few times over the years.) Beacuse it was so long ago, the reminisences were of pre war years often, and serve more as food and social history then cooking, although most of my early stock recipes came from Gourmet, and I still use many of them. In sum, Gourmet opened the door to a world that I found irrestistible and indispensable. Still do. Can't throw the early ones away. Cook's Illustrated but I don't subscribe. I look through it at Border's, if there are things I'd use I buy. I have big problems discarding cooking mags, so I try to limit the ones which come over the threshold. Food and Wine Again, I don't subscribe, just buy it on occasion.
  6. This might be obvious to all, but when I first had it about 20 years ago it was a revelation to me: thick, chunky, blue cheese dressing globbed high on a square of warm yellow corn bread, (with kernels).
  7. If you are partial to Italian pastries (I'm not, really) and happen to be near 11th St on the Eastside check out Veneiro's between 1st and 2nd. Prices are reasonable and I think it's worth a taste. Also E 19th between Park and Broadway is 'wichcraft. Try the cream filled chocolate cupcakes. Far better than the cupcake specialty places I've tried, IMHO.
  8. I'm partial to the Bakewell Cream biscuit recipe. If you have access to Bakewell Cream give them a try: simple, light, never-fail.

  10. I just caught up with this thread but was happy to see the Cook's Illustrated recipe represented. It's my old faithful. I am looking forward to giving the other cakes a try as dietary considerations permit.
  11. My Mom seldom drank, but when she did, as often as not she'd order a Rob Roy, which, when I was a child, she explained to me was a Manhattan made with Scotch. I'm fond of Manhattans, and occasionally toast my Mom with a Rob Roy.
  12. I was wondering what the consensus is on Beard Papa on B'way in the upper 70s. I found the cream puff to be delightfully rich, not too sweet, a nice pick up and eat on the go sort of thing. Wish they had a Beard Papa in my neck of the woods.

  15. I'm pretty traditional with tuna, mayo, a dash of vinegar, chopped onion & celery, chips on the side, pickle or olives or cornichons on the side. Instead of lettuce I sometimes slice cucmber paper thin to line the bread. My special treat: Hot Tomato Chutney (Nervous Nellie's) spread on the bread. Delicious.
  16. Can he eat nuts? Almonds or peanuts seem to be effectuve. Beer. Olive oil.

  18. I'm a Pepsi One fan for cola, my fav though is Diet Canada Dry Ginger Ale. I tried the Diet Coke Lime because it was on sale 20 oz for 89 cents and I was thirsty. It wasn't bad, but I have a personal problem with all lime (sometimes lemon pre-flavored drinks. When we were kids the sick stomach remedy prescribed by our family doc was something we came to call "green medicine". It had a citrusy-lime flavor, and everything I drink which is lime-flavored (unless I add it fresh myself) brings back the taste of that medicine and the sick feeling I always had while swallowing it.

  20. Let me weigh in with Maytag. I find the taste clean and crisp.

Rear Window isn't a food movie, no food at all really, but there is a scene where James Stewart, Grace Kelly and Wendell Corey are all holding brandy snifters warming the brandy by swirling it non-stop in their hands. I must have seen that movies over a dozen times, and I noticed this for the first time this weekend. Once I noticed, I was mesmerized by the activity. I lost track of what they were saying because the swirling was so constant. I wonder if the actors felt silly doing that?
  22. My South Beach book is on loan (constantly) but I seem to recall that tomatoes are only allowed in limited quantities at first. Don't recall why. I think yougurt is okay as long as it's unsweetened, or artificially sweetened, no fruit etc.
  23. 1. The Golden Books had one title which I think had a lasting effect on me: Pantaloon the Baker. It was about a French poodle, in France, who wanted to be a baker. The litle fat moustached stereotype of a pasty chef would chase him away, but finally Pantaloon comes to the rescue when the baker needs a hand (I think the baker was injured). I can still see that poodle on his bicycle carrying trays of pastries through the cobbled streets. Great read. I must locate a copy. It woke in me a thirst to go to France for the pastries, which I eventually did, of course, and to turn out beautiful pastires myself. Still working on that technique. 2. Confederacy of Dunces - I recall Ignatius lying in bed sucking the filling out of a box of jelly doughnuts. 3. Iris Murdoch "The Sea, the Sea" An Englishman lives by the sea, natch, and makes much of what he is cooking and eating, despite the fact that most of it seems to be dreadful. I could never make out whether the local shops didn't carry better choices. Can't recall the details, just the yuck factor as he prepared his meals.

    Yogurt

    I'm not even sure if this is yogurt, but I like eating it: Yoplait, not the supermarket staple, but the French labeled sold in Fairway NYC for one and I'm told in Eli's and the Vinegar Factory. It is not tangy, but is super creamy, thick and in a small terra cotta-like single serving pot. Of course the pots pile up and can be used again. Love the stuff.
  25. If anyone plans on heading over to PluckU for some wings, please note that the one on the corner of 2nd Ave and 35th closed a few weeks back. I was never a Pluck U fan anyway.
