  2. If there's a chance I will show up here drunk, I will strongly consider giving up the sauce for good. There are 5 million better late night options, including Big Wong, BdC (of course), Sette, walking to Pat's in Philly, posting on e-gullet, posting on chowhound, drinking Richebourg until 5:30 AM, listening to Air Supply, driving nails into my head, or perhaps eating ammoniated Reblochon. In short, not sure I'll be back.

    At least there was bagpipes and Scotch at the Guards to save the night.

    I hate to be so bitter, but I'm still pissed off (literally, like that place's floor) at myself for being drunken enough (some donkey year ago) to go into Au Pied...and order baked brie. It came out with bread that you could find in a dumpster behind Starbucks, and the cheese itself, I'm afraid it was very close to becoming an igneous rock. Loser me, didn't test before scarfing, and I burned my mouth on that lava brie. It scorched my mouth, my gullet, my tastebuds stolen by magma and stale baguette.

    But I like eggs. And Scotch is there to save the night...

    Do you think an omelette would be safe? Maybe a time or two, instead of pizza?

    As someone who has not yet been to Minibar, this column has given me the next best thing. I can just about taste the tug-of-wars between flavors and feel, well, what else, but foam, essence and emulsion (I felt like a rubber ducky as I read about the clam chowder).

    Actually, this column reminds me (again) why I am the Kliman fan that I am. Because he writes and he writes damn well...

    and not like a distant, glass swilling, outlandish critic. No, he writes like someone who loves food and who loves words and who maybe believes he's akin to his readers. Plus, he knows Cho and Rock.

    This stuff isn't packaged for someone who's searching for a star or a key or a quick answer. It's meant to leave you thinking, and in a sense, to come to some of your own conclusions. Or at least this is my impression.

    Beat me up for liking the guy, but words were my first passion.

    Now I'm ready for some deconstructed wine.

  4. One of the most friendly dog blocks in town is the 1800th block of 18th Street, mostly thanks to the presence of City Dogs and Doggie Style Bakery. Larry's Lounge, Dupont Market, Rosemary's Thyme, (88, RIP 2004), all allow doggies on the patio. These places aren't the greatest, but why not a sandwich or coffee at Dupont Market? How about a few beers at Larry's with little Willy upon your lap or big ass, slobbering Sammy at your foot?

    Likewise, Doggie Style was kind enough to donate huge stainless steal water bowls to various businesses on that block so that they could be placed at store fronts. I learned about the good work of these folks (Doggie Style Bakery et al) working an event for the DC Humane Society... They probably have better tips than me.

    Your dog probably doesn't want to be around people who aren't very happy to have him. So keep it in the neighborhood, keep it casual, and reward your pooch with an extra long walk in the park. :smile: I miss my dog!

    1) Ray's the Steaks and King Abdullah????? Hmm... I think His Majesty would demolish a filet or NY strip there with a quickness. No go on the mashed taters... that dumbass South Beach/Atkins crappola. HM & Michael would have a lot of military experience to talk about.

    2) Two Slovenian wines that I would love to have next Sunday at Ray's the Steaks (will share with Michael of course) ..... First One: Bagueri Merlot. Second One: Vinski o Sentanel (another Merlot). First time I tasted these by the glass, I admonished the server thinking they had served St. Emilion.... That's how fly these wines are.

    3) The best cab company... even though I live a 10 minute walk from the promised land of Ray, I always choose my favourite, Red Top, to take me there.

    4) Much much less than a stupid fresh ray's hangar steak covered in crumbled bleu cheese.

    Bravo Bravo, MoD!

  11. I like Sparky's on 14th Street (maybe at S Street) and Java House at 17th and Q Streets because both of those places don't have little credit cards that they push at the front counter with which you are encouraged to blindly ring up $32/week in lattes.

    They don't have Dow Jones to cushion a bad fall; their coffee has to be good or else they close.

    I can only vouch for regular drip coffee, though (it's all I know).
