  1. I am back in for this challenge. My freezers are out of control! So, here is last night's freezer meal. I thawed out some Ribeyes and cooked them using the recipe in the Balthazar cookbook My steaks were ready 15 minutes before the recipe said they would be, but I was prepared. I am still getting used to my new stove. It's a Wolf six burner dual fuel and I love it, but it's a lot hotter/faster than my old stove. Sliced steaks My sister and I do not eat red meat so I had to make a substantial side. I chose to make Risotto, using peas and mushrooms from the freezer And then for dessert, I raided the freezer again and served Ree Drummond's mini turtle cheesecakes to the teen and the guys (ladies were full) And I was Rewarded for my efforts with a Patriots victory. Who was the idiot that scheduled an all-staff meeting starting at 8AM the morning after the Super Bowl? Oh yeah, that was me 😞

    Dinner 2019

Sure. It is an America's Test Kitchen recipe. Stir together 2/3 cup flour, 1/3 cup cornmeal, 1/2 tsp. each baking powder and baking soda, and 1/4 tsp. salt. In another bowl combine 1/3 cup sour cream, 2 tbsp. sugar, 1 egg, 3 tbsp melted and cooled butter and 2 tbsp. milk. Mix together the two bowls, along with 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and 2 thinly sliced scallions, until just combined. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-17 minutes. Makes six corn sticks. This recipe was written for muffins, but I have a corn stick pan, so used that instead. Last night I made a Sicilian swordfish stew.

    Dinner 2019

Last night I made turkey chili and cheddar-scallion corn sticks. I have not made chili in years because I had it in my head that I did not like it. Turns out I was right, I don't like chili. I'm hoping to foist off the leftovers on my brother in law this weekend. The corn sticks were tasty though.

    Dinner 2019

Last night the rest of this week's salmon from the fish share got made into crispy salmon cakes with a salad. Quite tasty. I had one cold leftover for lunch today and that was good too. I like my fish share a lot, but you have to plan around the weather at this time of year. I am guessing there is going to be no fish delivery next Monday if the current stormy and snowy weather forecast holds.

    Dinner 2019

Jalepeno, garlic, cilantro, salt and lime cured swordfish with udon noodles and bok choy. I have to confess that I ate all the swordfish and the chile-garlic sauce and only ate one bite of the noodles. The swordfish was really tasty and I was full once I ate it all.

honey garlic roasted chicken with fregeola, spinach and carrot.
  8. My nephew stole all of my black bean soup 😞 His argument was that he is a starving college student and black bean soup is one of his favorite foods. OK then. Work lunch soup part two: this one is a spiced sweet potato and tomato soup. The recipe was in my local newspaper's Sunday magazine. After tasting it, I added a big spoonful of peanut butter, which improved the flavor a lot.
  9. black bean soup to take for work lunches this week

    Dinner 2019

last night, slow cooker chipotle chicken tacos with pickled onions from New York Times Cooking
  14. I used the classic tomato soup recipe from Cook's Country. I can't link to the original because all the ATK recipes are behind a paywall, but I found the exact recipe on someone's foodblog. The only difference I see is that she used evaporated milk but the recipe calls for heavy cream: http://goodetaste.blogspot.com/2011/12/my-favorite-tomato-soup-recipe.html
  15. i love your soup bowl. Yesterday was cold and rainy. I made classic tomato soup and popovers. My nephew had three bowls
  16. I did not see this when it was originally posted. Sorry! Just in case it might be helpful to someone else, from your list I would recommend Select Oyster Bar. Summer Shack has a very good pan roasted lobster. The rest of the menu is OK. I am not a huge fan of Legal Seafoods in general, though their raw bar is good. That said Legal Harborside has a great bar on the third floor with awesome views and a small menu--mostly lobster rolls and sushi. I very much dislike McCormick and Schmicks. My favorite for cooked seafood in Boston is Island Creek Oyster House. They have terrific oyster sliders and everything is impeccably fresh. They are known for their lobster and short rib pasta,. Service is top notch. Another little gem is Saltie Girl, which specializes in tinned seafood. Finally you cannot go wrong with Neptune Oyster. For sushi, my favorite is Douzo. I ate there recently and took some photos and thought I would share them here XO Toro with sturgeon caviar and aioli XO sauce Tamari scallop with cilantro, diced mushroom and sesame Tuna tataki with spicy ponzu Yellowtail usuzukuri with yuzu sauce, jalapeño and "red spicy sauce" Assorted sashimi (and a couple of nigiri for my niece) Maki rolls: toro jalapeño (cucumber, onion and asparagus wrapped with layers of torched toro and jalapeño), crunchy (cucumber, spicy tempura crumbs wrapped with tun and salmon, topped with mango sauce, inure and tobiko), backbay (asparagus, cucumber and avocado wrapped with seared tuna, wasabi mayo), and torch (avocado, cucumber and spicy mayo wrapped with seared yellowtail, yuzu sauce and tobiko)

    Dinner 2019

I have to go back to work tomorrow for the first tome since December 20 😞 My house has been filled with people for the whole break, and so I was not able to get many pictures of things i cooked. Here are a few things I made for my nephew. Meatball sub chicken parm prosciutto-gruyere-fig jam sandwich Today was the big family New Year's linner. I made spring roast chickens with preserved lemon from Ottolenghi's Simple a 16 lb ham, mashed potatoes, homemade rolls (no pictures), and a delicata squash-brussels sprouts "salad" from Deb Perelman's Smitten Kitchen Every Day (with the pita bread omitted) Here's to another year of delicious dinners for all of us!
  19. Last installment. Our final day was spent walking around the city and a visit to the Tate Modern (huge). We stopped by Buckingham Palace And watched the very confusing changing of the guard (the military band was playing the Jurassic Park theme song as they guard changed???) A view of the evil eye (I hate ferris wheels of all types) Aaahhhhh Fish and chips by the Thames We found a pub and stopped in for a drink More festive decorations Our last dinner was at J. Sheekey Crab salad Potted shrimp Dover sole Roasted mixed shellfish (lobster, scallops, razor clams, shrimp, prawns) Too full for dessert. So that's it for this time. Thanks for the restaurant suggestions. I hope to get to some on a future visit.
  20. Day three, more museums, more walking. For dinner this evening we went to Benares. After the tasting at Nobu the night before I was not up for another one, so we bypassed that option in favor of just selecting a few things off the a la carte menu. They brought us an amuse bouche--lentil dumplings we ordered a sampler of their vegetarian appetizers an order of rogan josh some naan and spinach strawberry and mint cocktail complimentary dessert of tangerine gelee, chocolate tart and clementine macarons We were unable to fish what we ordered. I am so glad we skipped the tasting menu because the amount of food that would have gone uneaten would have been embarrassing! Large meals mean long walks. More impressive Christmas decorations Fortnum and Mason food hall (we went back here the next day and bought a lot of Christmas gifts) Soho Chinatown And, of course, a pub
  21. Thanks! My husband has been to St. John a few times and suggested it as an option. I was not sure if there would be enough variety for me, as I eat mostly fish or vegetarian. He has said it is excellent though. Maybe next time. We are wine drinkers so thanks for those recommendations also.
  22. From my brother: a Victorinox boning knife, a rack to stand pot lids up in, and an entire case of the disposable gloves I wear while preparing meat or seafood. From my sister, a bottle of very good champagne. From my teenaged niece, a tin of homemade cookies. From my parents, a gift card to an amazing cheese shop near me https://wasiks.com and a beautiful serving platter. From my husband, a new camera (Canon 5D) to use to take pictures for the Dinner! thread.
  23. How are you going to reheat the beef? I also made a bone in rib roast yesterday and my husband, niece and nephew want the leftovers for dinner tonight. It's prime dry aged and cost me a pretty penny so I really don't want to mess it up.
  24. Our second day was spent exploring the National Gallery and lots of walking around. We stopped in to Caffe Concerto for breakfast. That seems to be a chain of sorts. The inside was charming Lots of pastries in a display case Breakfast was not very good. I had a baked egg with tomato sauce and too much ricotta cheese Husband went for the full English. More sights seen That night we went to Nobu for dinner. We opted for the classic omakase and asked the waiter to do a beverage tasting of his choosing. He paired our food with a mix of sake, red and white wines. Cocktails First course, toro belly sashimi Second course, more sashimi. Upper left going clockwise, we had yellowtail with jalapeño ponzu, a sea bream, a spicy tuna and a scallop. third course, sushi. More bream, tuna, horse mackerel (my favorite) and I forget what the fourth one was! The cup has a chopped tuna sushi. . Next, miso black cod Followed by hot pot. Husband had waygu steak and I don't eat red meat so they brought me toro final savory course, rice with shiitake Dessert sample ice cream First real dessert, hazelnut ice cream and molten chocolate cake Second dessert, more ice cream, a coconut frozen "grapefruit", and a hazelnut cake. , This was a ton of food and we were stuffed, so went for a long walk afterwards. We found a Christmas fair near our hotel and decided to explore. Of course I had to take photos of some of the food stalls even though I was too stuffed to try anything 🙂
  25. I recently visited London for the first time and thought i would share my dining experiences. It was a short trip--just four nights. My husband had to stay another week for work. He has to go back for two of the fours weeks in January and one week in February and I am hoping to tag along for another visit, so if anyone has dining suggestions I'd like to hear them. We stayed at the Intercontinental Park Lane, which was very convenient for proximity to sightseeing. Lots of impressive Christmas decorations Our first dinner was at the Savoy Grill. Lobby decor Crab salad Omelet with black truffles (they also had white truffles for an uncharge but we declined) Dover sole Lobster thermidor Complimentary dessert (mince pies and salted caramel chocolates) Back at the hotel we had a cocktail. This was called Mother's Ruin--it smoked and bubbled, Very odd The next morning we found a donut shop with a charming sign I don't like donuts but took a picture of the display case.
