  1. Gwinnett Forum Okay, therese, I shall throw away my widow's weeds for Trader Joe's and head for the Dekalb Farmers' Market ...
  2. To me, these factoids are even more frightening: It is sad indeed that we no longer see the joy in our children's faces as they share their stories over meals ... our loss as well as theirs ... The nice thing about more traditional Jewish families (who are observant) is the fact that the Shabbat meal is a time for everyone to join together, not only for the food itself but the camraderie of the family (no television on, not answering a ringing telephone, etc.) The breaking of bread with a short blessing, the kiddush over the wine, the blessing of the children, all make the meal a very unique one.
  3. And, after checking out their website, I have to agree with you on Wegman's! Incredible services offered and a place to dine well on the premises!
  4. For me personally, the very last few times I set foot inside a Winn Dixie (and we're talking some 5 years ago now), the stores were not particularly clean, the produce was not well tended, meat looked below average, overall the canned/boxed choices were poor, and the entire experience screamed "we're not even trying now" ... I have come to realize that the addition of Publix to the Atlanta region has forced other groceries to upgrade their looks, products, customer service, etc. The local Kroger near me (Orchard Park) has knocked themselves out to compete with Publix ... message is on the wall for everyone to see ... best can be better ...
  5. That is great, Jamie! You might even want to add it to the pre-nup ... one cannot be too specific these days with the cost of litigation rising exponentially ...
  6. So, in this particular case, the sense of sound is a negative? And the sighs of (your) pleasure don't add to her joy as you consume them (the cheezies) with apparent glee? Do the forthcoming marriage vows include the words "until cheezies do us part"?
  7. Senses Restaurant Toronto, CanadaRobb Report review Which, if you could select one for your personal dining preference, is the sense which you most value? I personally would choose sight because the way a dish looks is particularly important to me ... they say a person eats with the eyes first.... when a dish arrives, the harmony of colors, flavors, herbs, the sauce, the whole presentation, when done properly, lets me know that I am in for a treat! How about you?
  8. Official explanation: the sourceUnofficial explanation: I loved Harry's because it had something for everyone! The prepared foods were amazing, the produce was exquisite, and the packaged goods rivalled Trader Joe's ... the dream ended when Harry Blazer left Atlanta suddenly due to financial issues. The chain was bought by Whole Foods ... not at all the same...
  9. When queried as to where she might choose to live in her future, my daughter looked at me with shock and awe as she responded, "Whaaaaat?! and give up this piece of heaven on earth??" ... as a vegetarian, she is in the heart of organic farm-perfect living in Santa Cruz ...
  10. apparently there are quite a few .. check this out for details ...
  11. If this is true, Anne, then I will personally give you a free gift card to the nearest TJ's and an airplane ticket ... When I visit my daughter on the central coast of California, I purposely pack lightly going out and leave room for my TJ's "stash" coming home .. this time, my bag was weighed and was tagged "HEAVY BAG" .. sure I was embarrassed trying to drag it off the carrousel, but, hey, it is Trader Joe's! How much could my full ripe Turkish apricots and orange scented dried cranberries weigh? So what if I bought 6 big bags of each? plus the candy and cookies, and miniature bell peppers and lemon curd and jams and jellies and ...
  12. Let me submit an opinion from a friend when asked about this thread by email, which rather expresses and echoes my personal feelings:
  13. I don't know what it is about Trader Joe's but they have some sort of an indefinable "je ne sais quoi" (but I repeat myself) ... the items offered are unusual in some cases and hard to find elsewhere ... the prices, which one might expect to be higher, are surprisingly reasonable ... the variety ... it is such a pleasure to shop there (even if one is not able to use one's cellphone in their building! ) Yeah, Trader Joe's would be a very welcome addition to the food scene in Atlanta ...
  14. Sala, Sabor de Mexico may be just what you are looking for, authenticity-wise ... menus are here when you click, and it is in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood, not Buford Highway ...
  15. My very favorite Roquefort comes from Epicurious ... can be found here in all its chunky creaminess: superb salad dressing for the bleu cheese fanatic ... originally comes from the Ritz Carlton .. how bad can it be? more variations and more ...
  16. (a) it's not that bad at all and, if you read my initial post, you will find the answer to (b) I am looking for a Trader Joe's basically ... can't understand why they are not yet in this city...
  17. I don't know about all of you naysayers but it would appear that MicBacchus will eat just fine .. between the many groceries in Myrtle Beach, and the options of online delicacies, no one is in "food extremis". Looks to me that she'll learn the 'lay of the land' culinarily and in short order because she is interested and is requesting information well in advance of her moving in ... when I first moved to a new town, my concerns were about homes and schools and cultural things ... completely forgot about groceries... The demise of Winn Dixie has been long expected by those of us who avoided the place like the plague ...
  18. I, too, shop at Publix, Therese, and at several others as well ... but would it hurt for a TJoe's to open here as well? and this is not only about Atlanta ...
  19. (calming down, now breathing normally) We actually do have Fresh Market, Whole Foods, and Eatzis, so we are not about to starve anytime soon ... I think I really became most envious when I went to Trader Joe's ... now, if we could only get a Zingerman's or Balducci's ....
  20. Just returned from California and my usual shopping there always makes me wonder what a city the size of Atlanta, Georgia, has to do to get some of the better gourmet haunts like Trader Joe's and Dean & DeLuca ... Do you think that your city is worthy of some "food respect" which has yet to appear? What are the "barometers" that bring these establishments to town? Does it irk you? What gourmet grocery are you waiting for? (fully acknowledge that there is a long thread on Trader Joe's from 2002 here at eG but this is a new complaint...)
  21. can't resist telling you that they do ... An aside here: Piggly Wiggly was featured prominently in "Driving Miss Daisy" ... a venerable old Southern grocery chain apparently still in business ... source
  22. There is a large Bi-Lo there which is just fine! ... the website the map to the Bi-Lo on 38th .. please note that there are two country clubs in that area .. surely their members don't simply eat McDonald's every day ... Actually, you might just be quite surprised .. Kroger and Costco are both fine as well .. you won't starve!
  23. That I did, Carrot Top, but you were far too fast for me on this (as usual your agile brain is in motion and set on high)! Has anyone seen this The Lunch Club?
  24. I often travel alone because my husband prefers to remain at home in the United States, so, when I found this website Solo Dining, I read much of it eagerly! This is nothing short of a self-adventure for people dining out alone! A story on dining alone.. a dialogue between a diner and a very perceptive maître d': source
  25. They are so perfect during this summer where the heat is now hitting in the 90's every day .. beautiful sorbets make one feel as if life will go on until the chill sets in the fall ... tonight, I made blueberry-peach sorbet and the color is amazing! Needed to be set in a lemon or orange shell but not enough time to buy the fruits ...
