Canada has laws about importing alcohol, like most countries, but if you go to the LCBO you might be surprised to learn that they have a special order section and if you find the right person on the right day you may be able to find more than a few rums which aren't on the shelves in the normal outlets. The big LCBO near the water in downtown Toronto had a very good selection of rums that don't have to go through the normal channels and offer consumers a lot of options. The bad news is that once a product becomes popular importers have to jump through a lot of other hoops in order to stay on the shelf.

Thanks, Ed. The LCBO store you are referring to is the Queen's Quay store.

I am not personally a rum drinker but would like to pick up a bottle for my father, who is. He drinks dark, amber and light depending on the day. I cannot give a specific brand as he picks many of them up out of the country or at his home in the US. Could you possibly recommend something nice for Father's Day that I could purchase in Toronto?

The NSLC in Nova Scotia also has a "shop the world" option. As long as you are willing to commit to a case (or can organize enough friends to do so) they'll bring in just about anything, from anywhere.
