Penn Cove Mussels

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be on Whidbey Island this weekend and would like some fat Penn Cove Mussels. Are they in season and if so where do you get them on the south end of the island. We're going to be camping with four couples and two or three hundred preschool aged children. (And granted when you add up the number of kids in each family you get a sum total of seven, but when you stand and observe the general level of hooliganism and chaos, you too would conclude that there's at least two hundred, the noise level points to an estimate closer to three.) We'll be at South Whidbey State Park if that helps with suggestions.

Any other lunch or grocery (artisnal cheese?) suggestions welcome also.

Thanks.

Wow, that sounds..............................fun

I used to spend a lot of time on south Whidbey and we would buy the mussels from a friend of my grandmothers who sold them out of the back of his pickup truck. I'm sure he's no longer there (I swear he was 108 years old even back then). But I bet you can call Penn Cove Shellfish direct to see where you can buy them locally.

You should have some great weather this weekend, have a great time.

This is one of the Mussel Farms in Coupeville I don't think they sell retail but they may be able to point you in the right direction.

I've pulled up to the Penn Cove office on the water to buy mussels right out of the bay. No dice. They recommended the Safeway in Coupeville. Seems like if you call them ahead of time and ask for a large quantity, more than about five pounds, they should be able to accomodate you in some way. I've just never planned that far ahead.

Let us know. It'd be fun to head up there with a bunch of people, pick up ten or twenty pounds, then have a cookout on one of those fabulous beaches.

If we aren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat?
