I just learned of Debreaux's by the Overbrook Train Station, and it is very close to where I work. There is very little by way of discussion on the site or reviews on-line, so I am appealing to your respective gullets for input.

I live right near there, in Bala Cynwyd. It is good food but you have to wait for-EVER for your food. If you call and they say 45 minutes - go in 1.5 hours - no joke. I thought the ribs were very good. The fried chicken is very salty for my taste. I like Zeke's Main line BBQ more and it is worth a try. No big wait. It is realtively near Debreaux's so you can do a dual taste yet should you have the stamina. Perhaps five more minutes at most from Debreaux's. Zeke's is a left off City Ave (?63rd st?) and about a mile or so down on the left.

Hope that helps.

I had no idea Debreaux's sold bbq! I've had their wings and they were pretty forking impressive. The lady who owns it (Mrs Debreaux?) is awfully nice but you're right, their service is horribly slow, and IMO a bit pricey. And I've been living near the Main Line for years now and I had no idea that Zeke's existed. Do you have an address?

Zeke's is in a former McDonalds between 63rd St. and Overbrook High School on Lancaster Ave., next to the car wash.

6001 Lancaster Ave. Here is an article I have bookmarked. There was also a rib review in phillmag a few months back. That reviewer loved Debreaux's

Her husband, Joseph, is a landscaper, and had a side business going in selling “smoking” woods. Mostly the selection was fruit and nut woods. At one point he was thinking of going full time and building a smoke house. I live in Merion and would love to use them for takeout but the waiting time…..

Thanks for the info, all! So, the waiting time is long even for take-out? How reliable are theyfor take-out if you call in your order?

I think you MUST call in your order unless you bring a good book. Even if you do, as I said, show up much later than they tell you to. That has been my experience.

This thread got me hankering for ribs so I went to Zeke's tonight. He told me he was mobbed all day and they were out of cornbread and mac/cheese  but I went with the collard greens and yams.

I would give the tip to Debreaux's ribs although Zeke's is good, realizing I am not a southerner or BBQ expert. The wait for Debreaux's is just too long.

finally got some lunch-time bbq... went to Zeke's and was not sure what I was going to order until I saw a pulled pork sandwich being served. I got one to go (no sides, as it looked huge) and spent the better part of a half-hour enjoying what amounted to an open-faced platter on a bun it in my office. the bbq is the real deal, smoked and tasty, with an excellent home-made sauce (that you can get as mild, hot or mixed; I went with the mixed). Several people have peaked into my office to comment on the wonderful smell.

Zeke's is very much a "smoke house in the park" type of business, and Zeke even pulled off his gloves to work the register, which amounted to a wad in his pocket.

The question now is not "will I go back" but it is "will I go back to pick up some ribs for tonight."

Glad I didn't steer you wrong. I was there a couple of weeks ago hankering for beef ribs and when I got home I realized they got my order wrong. Thats a bummer. Prentice, the owner, is a very nice guy. I have never had the pulled pork yet.

Do both Zeke's and Debreaux's have seating?  Or are they purely takeout, like Dwight's?

Zeke's has a small dining room. I hear it used to be a fast food restaurant, but you cannot tell from the inside.

Debreaux's has a small dining room. I've only ordered takeout, so I can't say if the wait is shorter for those who dine in.

We love Zeke's!

I had my adult birthday party there a year ago last November!

First, we started, yes, started at Capogiro's with about 20 of our friends on a "surprise" outing!

They didn't know where we were going, just "meet us on the corner of 13th and Sansom" and, "bring a bottle or two of wine or champagne"...."come hungry".

Capogiro is a BYOB, believe it or not, so we had mid afternoon Sunday gelato and champagne.

Then I gave them directions (without telling them the name of) - Zeke's, pre-arranged with Prentice Cole, the owner. (He used to be in the wine business, you know, sold wine for a long time)...We all met at Zeke's, I had everyone order what they wanted, it was absolutely wonderful, and tons of food! Everything from that great pulled pork to incredible ribs, great wings, mac and cheese, lots of wonderful sides...and those desserts! Gosh, I can't remember what else! He has a smoker out back...

I've sent others there, but unfortunately, not everyone feels the way we do. It's in an old McDonald's building, not much atmosphere...

But what a birthday party! I held a surprise party for my friends!
