Any idea why hisop didn't get a star? I think it is comparable to Alkimia, don't you think?

paulbrussel -- I'd even say Hisop is better, although I really like Alkimia. Maybe the guys from Michelin didn't understand what they ate? :wink:

Too bad that Gault Millau no longer reaches across the border to report on Spain's best eateries, as they once did.

Too bad GaultMillau no longer is anything like GaultMillau...

Actually, Spain is back in their 2005 edition, as well as Belgium, Germany, Switzerland... But they only list top restaurants (from 16 to 19/20) : ElBulli, the Fat Duck, De Karmeliet, Lea Linster, etc. 60 or 70 pages: not bad, huh?

That addresses Judith's concerns, but not Victor's. How many pages do they have devoted to Spain, or to each other country? Do they list the top restaurants, or the ones closest to France. I seem to recall a time when GaultMillau listed restaurants that were close to the French border in neighboring countries. Are my memories accurate in that regard?

GaultMillau, now on its umpteenth comeback trail and with very little credibility left, does include a few Spanish restaurants located a few miles from the French-Spanish border, basically all the obvious choices. They've done so for years. These contents add strictly nothing to locally produced guides or even to Michelin. Back in its long-gone heyday as the trendsetting promoter of 'nouvelle cuisine', when it was still run by Christian Millau and Henri Gault, the GaultMillau company did produce one small national guide to Spain. It was largely financed by Spanish tourism authorities and, frankly, didn't amount to much either. This was the only Gault-Millau guide to Spain ever. It was published... in 1976! Almost three decades ago.

The German Gault-Millau has been published for at least a few years now, together with the German Christian Verlag. Their 2004 edition is even available online and lists restaurants from 12 (or 12,5) points onward.

Il Forno: eating, drinking, baking... mostly side effect free. Italian food from an Italian kitchen.
