Yes it is still early for me is the "good woman" gim the one with the addition of suger

i belive the translation is good housewife but just means rustic, or country. It might go a little like this 1,2,3,4

2 Oz. Gin (something with a lot of guts, bite, and panache)

.75 Oz. simple or 1large sugar cube if you want to jack up the organilepticness of the cocktail.

.50 of a lime cut in quarters.

Muddle lime, add rest of ingrediants, crack ice, shake thrice, and Roll it into a Rocks glass.

two short wide straws.

There is also the Caipirvinho, which is a light drink made in the style of a Caipirinha but using red wine instead of cachaça.

WOW, never heard of that. Sounds like a lovely fall pick me up. What about a Caiparina with Vino Verde. The only thing I don't like about Caip's is how quickly they spill down my neck. Maybe a long tall cocktail like a Brazilian Sour could be devine, (not at all like a sour, but like a NY sour, Rye sour topped with red wine) it would be breaking the rules (never mix the grain and the grape) But rules were ment to be jumped up and down on 'till they are the size of the little side of nothing, whittled down to a fine point.

One producer's rep in Brazil once told me that sometimes women don't like to drink caipirinhas (in brazil) because it causes them to have "cachaca" breath. His remedy for this (with his product) was adding just a dash of gin to the mix, something I have never tried. Yesterday at a tasting I mada a 1/2 caipirinha with 1/4 lime, 1 tsp superfine sugar, muddled then topped it off with cachaca and some Dole not-from-concentrate pineapple juice....it's awesome. I'll be making them at another tasting this evening I expect. Not sure what to call it.

Quite right, cant start with bad ice and turn it into nice cracked or crushed ice.  Kold-Draft RULES!

You must excuse the slaughter of forthcoming Portuguse.  A caiparina is cachaca, caiproshka(russian) is vodka, caiprina(tilda) is with rum (YUMMM!).

Sinse this discussion, was started about muddlers, can I say that PUG muddlers are gods gift to bartenders.

caiprissima is with rum. My mistake.

The women I know like cachaca breath just fine, thank you -- but I'm biased: at our wedding reception, we had a caipirinhas toast, just before the samba band started playing....

By the by, johnnyd's caipirinha recipe is the bomb: clickety click for his fail-safe method. Unlike bigbear, he (and now I) like a strenuous muddling followed by a happy pause while you contemplate impeding pleasure.

Boa noite!

All my Brazilian friends keep telling me not to waste my time w/ Pitu . But I have never seen any other brand of cachaca sold in my area (L.A.).

Would love any "good" brand recommendations or places to buy other types of cachaca.

Dyin' to try some of these Caipirinha variations on the thread!

Obrigada por tudo...

Oi Chris...

That is a killer looking caipirinha. Nice ice crush. I'm suddenly thirsty!

I'll have to look around for that "Velho Barreiro" here on the West Coast... Thnx for the recommendation.

Two brands which are miles ahead of Pitù, 51 and Velho Barreiro are Mãe de Ouro and Beleza Pura.

You know, you'd think that here in Providence, with a slew of Brazilians and other Portuguese-speaking folks, you could find better cachaca.... I envy y'all who can go to that NYC cachaca tasting.

Is Costa Mesa west coast enough for you?

Hi Time Wine has Velho Barreiro, but as far as I can tell NOT Mãe de Ouro or Beleza Pura.

Thanks VoodooDog.

I'll check it out.

But I'll still keep my eyes peeled for the Velho Barreiro and Mae de Ouro.

Thanks for the props Chris!  Here is a direct link to the actual caipirinha making from foodblog: Dining Downeast.

Have you tried a ciapirihna with a rhum agracole? There are many similarities in the flavor profiles, and the aged rhums have such depth and complexity, and the nice thing about the caip's is they don't have alot of business to get in the way of your rhum. I might use a demmerra cube instead of white, but that would be my only tweeking.

I just got the latest Beverage Media for Metro New York (it's the phone book with all the liquor prices) and here are the "cachacas" that are on the market (in NY). It is important to note that larger NY retailers will ship to other states if it is permitted. I have also included the company websites. Hope it helps!

Well after trying Oronoco at Rumfest and speaking with the Diageo rep. I can honestly say that despite it's Brazilian hertitage Oronoco is definitely a rum. According to the rep it is actually a blend of rum and cachaca and it is being marketed as a premium rum. It looks like they are trying to go after the Ten Cane market, and I have to say I like it better than the Ten Cane. I thought the product was just delightful to drink with a very rich molasses flavor and great mouth feel.

Greetings from a lapsed e-gulletista;

It was lovely to meet some of you at rum fest, although I barely got out from behind our booth (Excalibur Enterprise, I was the one in black glasses pouring heavy on the Rochinha) to sample many of the other fine offerings... I'm perplexed by Oronoco, and noone can tell me that cachaça and coke are a workable mix. Diageo's bottling does seem more like a rum though.

Just figured I'd chime in for Beleza Pura on the Caipirinha thread... I recently updated the cachaça recipes on our website, www.belezabrazil.com, now up to 66... My personal pick for the winter is the grapefruit and ginger caipirinha.

GRAPEFRUIT & GINGER CAIPIRINHA

2 oz Beleza Pura Super Premium Cachaça

½ cup fresh grapefruit, cut in chunks

1 tbsp fresh grated ginger

2 tbsp sugar or simple syrup

splash of triple sec

Muddle grapefruit, ginger, and sugar in a non-breakable glass. Add Beleza Pura, triple sec and a rocks glass full of ice, and shake well. Pour contents into a large rocks glass. Garnish with thin slice of grapefruit.

Sometimes I use Armazem vieira, the vegetal notes and eau de vie pick up the ginger bite really well.

I'll be updating again soon with some new recipes from Nick Mautone, and we do take submissions...

beijo

The way I heard it is ...

Caiprinha - cachaca

Capirovska - vodka

Capipirssima - good rum or vodka

By the way - Pitu is nasty stuff. Something you would sit in to remove a tatoo. Look for Sao Francisco.

Annoyingly, calamansi disappeared from the farmers' market just about the time I got my cachaca earlier this spring.

Fortunately, they are back and they make an awesome caipirinha. With their lime-tangerine goodness they are way better than those annoying kumquats.

Depending on size, I recommend about 3 per cocktail. Yum!
