Considering the fact that I have just returned to Vancouver from Vietnam could anyone suggest a good authentic Vietnamese restaurant. I am looking for something authentic and hoping to not pay too, too, much.

Thanks!

For Pho I have always liked Kim Phung on Victoria between 42nd and 43rd. I have no idea if it is authentic having never been to Vietnam myself. It's always full of Vietnamese people so you can draw your own conclusions on that.

Another good place is Le Do on Hastings a block west of Nanaimo near the corner on the south side of the street. Although I don't like their Pho as much their Bahn Mi and brochettes are excellent. You might also consider Au petit Cafe on Main street. Forget about Vina's various locations as they are too canadianized.

BTW has ayone tried the Yaohan Centre food fair in Richmond, great looking food. I had a Bi Bhim Bob from the Korean place and I loved it. Comes with a side of Kim Chi.

I love Yaohan. My kids love Yaohan. My wife tries. (She's a Scot, so allowances must be made.) Every stall sells something good. I was taken there for a quick business lunch years ago by a chinese client. Boiled chicked that you dip in a green sauce. Weird, but really good. Since then I'm back all the time. Good Hong Kong Coffee at the "chinese starbucks" by the entrance. Wife and I get coffee, kids go niuts on all the coin operated rides, still only a quarter!

My favourite for Vietnamese (actually more Cambodian) is Phnom Penh, in Chinatown. They have a Vietnamese Chicken Salad that is out of this world. Their Pepper Squid is amazing too.

I was at the Yaohan Centre the other day and had a fantastic Laksa (curry noodle soup) at the "Curry House", I think it was called. The soup was delicious, big, right amount of heat, and about five bucks. I'll be having that again.

A trip home is never without a visit to Yaohan and I've had the bibimbop the last three times. They do a very good job for a fast food place. One order is a bit too large for me, but you have to eat it all to get to the crunchy bits of rice at the bottom, or at least that's my excuse.

BTW that must be the most messed up parking lot in town. Like two days before christmas everyday.

Absolutely - You've got to get there before noon. If you don't, you're toast.

I have been to Vietnam (in 2002) and I second your recommendation of Kim Phung. It's very authentic, definitely.

I find the pho at Kim Phung to be the clearest, cleanest tasting broth in town, and it's obviously NOT made with msg.

There is a dish that I loved in Vietnam, especially in Hanoi, called Bun Bo Hue. (Even though it originated in Hue, I prefered it in Hanoi) Unfortunately, every time I've ordered it in Vancouver, even in Vietnamese restaurants that I really like, I've been disappointed. Does anyone else know this dish and agree with me? Or, perhaps, even have a recommendation for me in Vancouver?
