The French government wants to raise tax on red wine by 300% in a move to lower the country's social security deficit. Prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin is expected to make a decision by the end of the week.

We are talking about a rise from

€0.03 (£0.02) ... to around €0.08 (£0.07) per bottle.

That's an extra five and a half cents a bottle in US$.

Two things pop into my mind. That's still like taxing milk in the US :biggrin: and what's the tax on white wine? That kind of discrimination is illegal here. :biggrin:

The French government just got handed a windfall from the 15,000 recently deceased pensioners from last Summer. They've done this wine tax thing before. They already have a standing inventory tax. This is why all of us have a hard time buying older Burgundy.
