    Peanuts in soda

    I've never tried this, but I read about it in a Stephen King book years ago, "IT", I think. It has stuck in my head all this time because I think I would like its salty/sweet/fizzy taste.

  4. I was recently in San Antonio and had a good Italian dinner at Dolores del Rio. Sorry, I don't remember the address, but it is on the Riverwalk, but not in a very obvious location. The food was very good, and the place had tons of character, and a good jazz band, making the experience even more memorable. Plus, it was New Years' Eve.

    Why are the winners of these types of events often very skinny? This lady was 99 lbs! I think this type of contest is pretty gross.

  8. why not? bars can have good food. You may be right. I usually think bars put more emphasis on the alcohol than the food, though, but maybe this is just my perception.
  9. Pottito's has the best ricotta cannoli, if you ask me. I think they've changed the filling recently, though. It doesn't seem as thick. However, it is still rich and delicious. I'm pretty sure that they are not filled to order, though. I have heard of people purchasing the shells and the filling separately, then filling them as needed. I don't like Varalli's because of the citron. I'm not sure I've ever had Isgro's. Do they put citron in the filling?

    Dips/spreads

    You can get Greek yogurt at Trader Joe's. I've personally never had it, but just saw it at the Wilmington, DE store on Saturday.

  12. Trader Joe's White Shells and Cheddar is darn good, better than Kraft. Great with some frozen peas and a little extra parmesan!
  13. By the way, I don't really consider the places I wrote about to be bars. To me, they are restaurants with bars.
  14. God, I love the Standard Tap! Their beet salad is delicious and beautiful, a revelation. Everything else I've had their has been great as well. One thing I don't like about the Tap though is that sometimes they play the jukebox too loud. For some reason, to me, this place has a cozy Eastern-European feel to me. It makes me want to go back to Prague. My bf and I frequent Monk's most often. I do like their burgers and sandwiches. I don't like seafood, so that takes out about 1/4 of their menu for me (the mussels selection). Honestly, I'm not a huge beer fan, either. But, I am adventurous and will occasionally try something from their bible. Their are a few that I like. Monk's Sour Ale is my latest fave. Have you noticed they changed their frites recently? Not quite a seasoned, and cut alittle thicker. Still really good, though. Red Light mussels is what BF gets, unless he gets a pork sandwich. He is also partial to Hoegarten mimosas at Sunday brunch. By the way, Sunday afternoon is a good time to go to Monk's if you don't want a long wait for a table. Last night I went to The Abbaye for the 1st time. It was very good. I was impressed with mostly everything about it, except their macaroni and cheese. I was expecting something creamy, hot (temperature-wise) and al-dente, or at least not mushy. A small portion was served spread out in a big, shallow bowl, allowing it to cool quickly. It was not creamy, but gummy and mushy. Kinda like my or my mother's attempts at making mac-n-cheese (sorry, Mom!). The panko chicken fingers were great. And I love those mixed green salads. I sampled my boyfriend's crabcake sandwich, which I liked b/c it didn't taste too much like crab. As I said, I don't like seafood, so to me this is a good crabcake. Seafood afficianadoes may think otherwise. I also had a little taste of their soup du jour: cream of celery. It was an unexpected choice for a soup du jour. I think it was the 1st time I'd heard of a restaurant serving it. I tasted mostly garlic with a celery undertone. Perfectly fine! I liked it alot. The Abbaye was sort of Belgian-ish, so it reminded me of Monk's, but it was more open, and less smokey and crowded. Also, their cigarette machine was very cool, and I don't even smoke. I'm looking forward to trying Il Cantuccio (?) across the street from The Abbaye.
  15. El Sol Del Peru had a stand at the Media Food Fest at the beginning of this month. I had a delicious pork tamale and arroz con pollo. My boyfriend had been trying to get us to go there for awhile, but whenever it was convenient for us, it was either closed, or I didn't want to go. Now that I've tried their food, I'm more eager to go to the restaurant. Anyone know there hours?
  16. Giada's head is too big for her body. Not that that has anything to do with her cooking ability. I don't know much about that, as her show annoys me and I don't watch it much. Seems like she's trying to be Nigella, and she emotes too much. One time I did watch Giada, when she made savory cookies with Locatelli, I believe, and rosemary. They looked very good. I'd like to try that recipe. Has anyone ? What do you think? I do enjoy Nigella, but I've had it up to here with the reruns! Could we please have some new Nigella?!

  18. I always loved beets and still do. Things I hated but now love include olives, chinese food, capers, onions, eggs, sandwiches of any sort. I'm still working on cultivating a taste for seafood and shellfish, but no luck so far. I have tried it over seven times, I'm sure, but, with few exceptions, I still don't like it. Sorry, Jeffrey Steingarten.
  19. Cafe du Monde may be my favorite place on earth! I've only been to NO twice. The first time I went to Bayona, and made it a point to go there again on my second trip. My boyfriend has been to this wonderful city over a dozen times and Bayona is one of his favorite restaurants there. I wouldn't call it cheap, though. We also enjoy Maspero's. I had good red beans and rice there. Its more on the inexpensive side. Uglische's is also fun, and cheap for sure.

    I think Francie Nolan's mother (from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn ) made a desert similar to this Danger Pudding. It was a sweet born of poverty.

  23. Have any of you read Fat Land, by Greg Critser? It explains the social, economic, commercial, and even political reasons that the obesity rate in America has skyrocketed over the last 2 decades. It is depressing and shocking! BTW, this is my first post.
