  1. 1 star does not equal 3 rosettes, but 3 rosettes are better than 2. Have a good time. When in Rome, eat at 3 rosette establishments.
  2. If I was still running a small place in a former life in Porlock, you could have dined with me. Consequently I remember lots of out-of-date places.... But if newer recommendations aren't forthcoming, The Rising Sun in Lynmouth was always a good bet....but I think it changed hands..... And I really enjoyed 'Bishops' in Lynton a couple of times. How memories fade! Actually, I will email an old mate and find out..... The walking on Exmoor is absolutely fantastic. I am slightly green. How helpful is this, really? The walking won't have changed though.
  3. I would have edited this post, but cannot now, due to the time limit on editing. A thoughtful eGulleteer mailed me with a quiet word about my smugness. I am sorry if I have offended anybody else, too.
  4. OK. Have not read thread biblically, but it's rude as a (wee) man not to allow a girl to face the audience. Get a grip, the rest of you. And for those cops (or policemen) among you - stop watching films and get a life.
  5. I am in the mood for date setting. Venue unsure I gather, but I am easy. Diary at the ready....
  6. Thanks PSB - this Firevault place looks very intriguing, just the place to to get *really* trashed after a full day of wine tastings. However...I could use your insight about the prices, I've had a look in their website & the sample menu doesn't contain any. Would love your take on how much dinner for 2 (without wine) might cost? ← I suspect that we may bump into each other over the next couple of weeks.
  7. Think about the community you have in London... Bloody annoying thing is that I had a good point to make, but it got lost in the ether. xxx Here's to sobriety.
  8. Compass box are stunning. Give Asyla to anybody, and they'll be impressed. I sell the range, and well, I sell the range.
  9. Can well understand that for those in the wine trade, January is the cruelest month (all the more reason to drown sorrows). Imperial China is a great idea (but what, William, is the wine list like?). A blow out lunch one day soon? ← So glad you have taken my comments seriously. I'd prefer dinner, as my days are numbered as it were. I am only an hour (and a bit, officer) away, and have no problem with a moderately sober evening. I would like to meet you Egulleteers as well as look into the bottom of my glass. We are more likely to get a good show for a modest feast, yes?
  10. Perhaps Imperial China then? January is a quiet month (searches for 'broke' emoticon)
  11. New Year, new interest in a Devon visit.
  12. food, not the company i trust! ← Were you there?
  13. Could someone just look in the guide and pst what Michelin expect of a 2 star joint?
  14. ......and look out Cornwall. Much seat reinforcement planned with Objective One funding. What's the payload on the new chairs, Basildog? Seriously good news for eveyone. Is this airsouthwest, or airyorkshire?

I had two to deal with last week, not made any more pleasant by the fact tht one seemed to be housing a swarm of bluebottles. Mmmm. They enrich the sauce, I suppose. I would add a couple of points: 1. If you're not presentation needy - eg. casseroling/braising/filleting then it's worth skinning them. 2. Breathe through your mouth AT ALL TIMES. (not your nose)
  16. I was talking to somebody yesterday about chequebook cuisine. St Ives it seems suffers worse than many other places. there's loads of business, yet people don't seem to care quite enough. I've yet to get a bad review of PBC, though. And thanks for the wine thingy. Had you had a binTwo there, you'd have been tempted in, if only by the...(...no don't know where this is going.) I went to look at an offie with Basildog there a month ago. Freehold nightmare! Blow and it would have all fallen down. Far too expensive, and no business.
  17. Hear hear. And there will be others who could have done with a win too, but true restos will surely look at the nominations. It is a real, serious, big time success for Nathan, Colin, Nicki and crew, as it is for Anthony and his family. Why was the Fanny joke so bad?
  18. Turkey - English? No, no, no. Goose, please, or beef. Champagne is a must. It helps the yearly visit to church along, and soothes the nerves among the screaming of children. Scramblers and SS, possibly, but I prefer Gravlax and Champagne. .....which is hardly traditional English. Ho hum.
  19. Agreed. I once heard a story about a stag night when one or two of them went missing...in the sort of place you wouldn't expect them to go missing. (Where's the green sicky smilie?) Not strictly breakfast, I grant you.
  20. Toast and marmalade with the kipper, surely. Just as (do I hear yawning?) bacon sandwiches should always have marmalade in them.
  21. Why, do the residents of St Ives hanker after your splendid stock of Hock and Lambrusco. ← Well that's what I'm trying to find out, derbrain. I'd just like to hear it from a punter's perspective, and Nicola clearly has good taste. In fact I'm due to go soon, and must go for lunch at Alba, having done Porthminster albeit 2,3,4 years ago. Grainy mustard all over your hands there, mate.
  22. Porthminster Beach Café - beautiful setting smart cooking. Went 2 years ago (!) Alba - recommended to me - never been Seafood Café - Cheap fresh fish. A bit fast food, and not all good matches, but smart and popular. Not been that recently, but must go West again soon. Tell me if you think St Ives needs a new wine merchant.
