  1. Had a lamb shank in a brown gravy/curry at Himalaya the other day and it was aweome. No Naan with it, I suspect because Kaiser was so busy. He wouldn't even let me get a lunch plate. That dude gets stressed out pretty quickly. Its pretty funny. Anyway, despite not getting my naan fix it was a really good dish and practically a stealk at $9-10.
  2. I hate to gush about a place but I had to get over to Piersons today for ribs and have to say that Luling must have been way on top of thier game last weekend to beat Piersons for ribs. On the strength of the briskett and ribs I now declare Piersons the winner of houstons best bbq. The debate is over, everone knows this is the case. Now, will the success of this place cause climate change due to the copiuos amounts of smoke this place is going to create?
  3. See my post on Piersons in Houston for what at first glance seems to be some great bbq in the Texas Food Trail thread..
  4. "Just as you know that you are getting good, but not superlative steak if you're heading to a local steak house instead of Peter Luger." Isn't Peter Lugers a local steak house? Just kidding.
  5. I tried Piersons today and have to say that I love it! These people are super friendly and are very concerned about your experience here. After ordering the young lady(Claerence's(owner/pit master niece) asked if this was my first time. She then ordered up a little sample for me. After getting the sample, the plate of que arrived about 2 minutes later. Im thankful for the sample but its really not neccessary when you have a big order coming. Not a complaint just an observation. Maybe a sample of something I did not order? Now that might be a good idea. On to the food: Probably the best briskett I have had in a long time. In addition to that it is, as mentioned previously, mesquite smoked which does impart a little different flavor than oak, a little spice and to some extent more smoke flavor which oddly at Beavers(too much smoke) was a complaint of mine. There is a nice bite to this spice wise but not over the top. Sausage is good but its not really my preference in sausage. They use a fine grind, I'm more of a course grind guy but hey, thats me. Pork was ok but IMO pork smokes up a little mushy to me. I know a lot of the east coast people swear by pork but for me, I like briskett. I was not able to try the ribs because they were out but I am quite sure they are good. Potatoe salad and beans were very good. About halfway through my glutteny of meat Mrs Virginia(I think thats who it was) brought me a little sample of cobbler that was excellent. If it were a saturday I probably would have gotten some if they had a scoop of ice cream to go with it. But alas, I have to work today and didn't need that weighing me down anymore than I already was/am. Claerence has plans for this place and I am excited. I checked out his vertical Klose pit and can see that in the very near future serving to a big crowd will be tough. The pit will hold 30 brisketts. So I don't know, 15 briskett, 20 ribs, sausage some chickens...Not a alot when you start throwing stuff in? Maybe there is another pit there or on the way. As a bbq owner though, selling out is what you want really. If they keep up the service, which is key here to me and continue with the quality product they are putting out then this will become Houstons best bbq and could potentially, although a little different in style, compete easily with the central Texas giants.
  6. I made this soup a couple weeks ago and although I was looking for something with less fat this was very good. This is a keeper.
  7. I was on the west side today and stopped off at V's Thai on Dairy Ashford. I was dining solo but wanted to try a couple things and was thinking about some Lab and a Curry. I got the lunch menu and then asked for the regular menu only to find that Lab was $12-$13. So I passed on the Lab and got a tom yum soup and order of massamam. The soup was very good but not as good as Kanamwans which is the standard for Thai soups. It was zippy with mushroom, those little corn deals, lots of lemongrass, ginger and chicken. The broth had a decent bite to it, for me it was a 3-4 on the heat scale for my wife it would have been an 8. The massamam was pretty good although the potatoes were just barely undercooked for my taste. The curry was silky smooth with decent heat, maybe a 5 for me(I did ask for very spicey). All in all I give the place a B on 1 visit. Not worth a special trip but if you live out there then its a great option. For me I would rank it, albeit after only 1 visit, behind Vieng Thai, Kanamwan, bangkok chef in Greatwood ( I know, its way off the radar) Thai corner then V's with the last three being neck and neck. Disclamer, I have not been to most of these in the last year.
  8. Thanks for the heads up about this place. I'm moving to Houston in a couple of weeks and one of my very favorite restaurants on the planet is the Banana Leaf, a Malaysian place out in the SF south bay area. So I'm pleased to know that along with all the other fine eateries in Houston, Malay cuisine is also available. ← Malaysian restaurants in Houston. If you're going to be moving to Houston you'll find b4 helpful. With regard to my part of town I find only about 60-70% of restaurants are listed but it is probably the most complete listing. Reviews are populist in nature for the most part but there are some very good posters, including some eGulleteers, and also some obvious ringers. It's useful for the maps if nothing else since you can search by part of town and zip code as well as cuisine. I look forward to your contributions to the discussions here on the eG Texas board, pahdnuh. ← KL (kuala lumpur) Malaysian restaurant on bellaire blvd. in chinatown is very good. their roti canai is to die for! ← Is KL that place in what looks like an old duplex? I've wanted to stop in but usually make my way to Xiongs instead.
  9. Central Market has a big ol display of tomatoes. Many are from Canada? These would almost have to be hydro wouldn't they?
  10. Recipe for this? This is exactly what I was looking for.
  11. I was wanting to make some gazpacho this weekend. Anyone know where one can find some good tomatoes now? Should I pass and make a different soup?
  12. I went to Gigi's Asian Bistro next door to Del Frisco's in the Galleria recently and had a really nice meal. This place is pretty pricey but if you are in the Galleria I don't know if you can do better? The knockout dish of the evening was the green curry short rib with thai eggplant. It was silky smooth goodness for your mouth and tummy. Had a fried fish in chili sauce that was good but would probably skip it next time in order to try something different. Apps were dried beef which was very good and some crab dumplings in a butter sauce, delicate little morsels.
  13. Obviously I had bad luck 2 times. I was just making fun of your 1 out of 4 comment and pointing out that 2 out of 5 is worse, thats all. It has good and bad days like everyone else in the que biz. I don't know if I had thier bbq or not, if I did it was a catered event. My father in law has a ranch in Lexington and I will hit this place next time I am visiting.
  14. I have been to Louie Muellers 5 times in my life and have had 3 great experiences and 2 not so good. Thats a worse ratio than the little place in Lexington????
  15. Gerardo's biggest draw in my opinion is the birria you can get on the weekends.
  16. We have a big bash every once in awhile out in Lexington at my Father In Laws little ranch and we have it catered by someone that sells in lexington only on weekend. Its darn good. I wonder if its the same?
  17. Er.. you may have difficulty with asian cuisines in general, then. Actually with great food in general, thinking about it! ← I'm going to go out on a limb and say Jay was being slightly tongue and cheek.
  18. The fajita and egg torta is probably my favorite. The burger is good despite the subpar patty. If the patty were better it would be one of the best sandwiches around. The verde sauce is important!
  19. I have not been in a long time but the s american place at eh corner of 59 and wilcrest is worth a shot. La Fonda maybe? Like I said its been a long time.
  20. I tied Tornado burger again and this time I really liked it. The spicey burger was nice and very juicy. Hand cut fries were very good.
  21. Have you tried the tacos at Guadalahara down the street from Laredo? Its about to close down but the tacos are addictive. Barbaqoa and pork are my favorite.
  22. The catfish "sandwich" comes with 2 big ass catfish filets.....$4! Its not the best bbq but its darn good and it is by far the best value in the city.
  23. Sorry, Frenchy's is a Houston Fried Chicken joint and does not pertain in this conversation.
  24. I actually like Polo Campero a lot. I would eat there over KFC or hartz anyday and its probably a tie with Popeyes. The original Frenchy's is better but the branches are more salty than I can handle and thats salty.
  25. I remember Sabri Nihari naam being very good as well. Seemed to have some ghee on it? There was a little glisten to it.
