  1. I did go that same day for lunch Jscarbor. Coincidentally, we wanted Pakistani for lunch (Pakistani = Himalaya, for my regular lunch friend and myself) and a new coworker from Pakistan mentioned Sabri Nahari. So, feeling guilty to pass on Himalya we went to SN instead. We got the buffet and especially enjoyed the dish they are best known for and named after, the Sabri Nahari. It is a thick spicy type of beef stew like pot roast. You scatter jalapenos, ginger and lemon juice on it and eat it with fresh naan. It was very, very good. I also appreciated the good free milk tea (chai). Our Pakistani friend said their Falooda (dessert made with ice cream) is awsome, but at 4.99 it is huge and we were stuffed. So we passed on that. Overall the buffet was ok (the Biryani and Tandoori chicken were hohum, another ground beef dish was way way greasy) but the beef stew excellent. I was also bothered by the absense of regular white basmati rice and any vegetable dish of any sort. For my money the exceptional hospitality and lovely food at Himalaya still rules. jscarbor, have you been any other time? Did you try anything other than the buffet? ← No, I have not been other than the one time. I'm going to give the non buffet items a chance. I'm a little doubful it will match Himalaya but I have to try it.
  2. I haven't made it to 17 but have heard very things about it. I have a birthday coming up and was thinking Bistro Moderne, 17 or Marks. A friend talked me out of Marks because he felt the exact same way about the place as I did, its too incosistant to be a great restaurant. I've had great meals at Marks and some truly dissapointing ones. So its down to BM or 17.
  3. Sold? To who? Wasn't HE the restaurant? Maybe something along the lines of Blackbird in Chicago would fly better here instead of something like Moto?
  4. Sorry, its just a block away on Hillcroft from Himmalaya. Its on the other side of the street in the newish 2 story shopping center. It replaces another Indian join that was there a year ago but I forget the name of it? Go today please?=) So I can hear back from you.
  5. Hopefully a change of scenery will keep these folks around for a long time.
  6. Had the buffet today at this place and have to say that it was very good. I can't directly compare to Himalaya because I had the buffet but if you can go with me on the fact that buffet is rarely as good as alla cart then this is worth trying for dinner IMO. I had the beef dish which is the namesake of this restaurant and it was good. The frontier chicken was amazing and biryani is second to Chef Lashkari at Himalaya. BTW I had to go to store and buy some pants because this Pakistni food is making me bulge! Note to self...Work out harder this weekend!
  7. Went to DV again last weekend and it was very good again. I still thik I like the Rubiola/pancetta pizza more than the Truffle/pear pizza? different strokes for different folks. Also tried a bite of a friends braised lamb dish that was spectacular!
  8. If you don't already just strike up a conversation with Kaiser while there, he's a really likeable guy. Man, I wish I could go every week or so, my waist line and wife wouldn't go for that.
  9. They have let me try cheeses before.
  10. Moellers on Bellaire is another bakery worth checking out.
  11. rustika is a good nakery/cafe with a s american twist. They are on SW freeway arouond buf spdwy.
  12. I drive by Peking cousine everyday. So is it served as a duck dinner feast? Price per person?
  13. I know GP, never had duck there, will give it a shot possibly. I want to say a chinese guy told me about a place called confucious on Bellaire, ever been there? Its close to Gessner and is only open for Dinner.
  14. Bueller?.....Bueller.....?
  15. Anyone have any favorites for peking duck in Houston?
  16. Another great meal last night. I feel the need to mention one dish I had that was superb. It was a potato dumpling. Sounds innocent enough right? Well this was no ordinary potato, it was mixed with spices, fried then topped with a sagg paneer type sauce and at that point I think it was cooked on top of charcoal which gave it a nice smoke flavor. One of the best dishes I have had in a long time. If you go by tell him John Scarborough sent you and he will take care of you.
  17. Where's City Market in Luling on your list?
  18. Yep, this place is good. And the owner seems to be a chocalate freak so expect high quality choc from here. I had the blood orange gelato and it is very good. The choc will be my next one to get, I tried it and yes it is VERY good but it didn't bring back memories of tre scalini from Neals I was hoping for.
  19. It looks like my wife misplaced my notes from my recent meal here. That being said we had a wonderful time. The food was very good and the waitresss who happened to be a sommelier as well and took great care of us. I think in all we got 15 courses and wine progression for $120-130 per person. I thought it was an excellent value. I enjoyed the dinner as much or more than my recent experince at Noe. The highlights of the meal were the textures tomatoes with a way better than I thought it would be olive ice cream, mushroom "fois gras" on a bed of sauteed leeks, banana "smoothie with beet caramel and salmon roe, coq au vaugn ravioli, beef dish that escapes me becuse I think I might have been on my 8th glass of wine and contrary to the chron's review an excellent "fried" fish item. I really like that Randy took the criticism from Cook well, it shows that he is tough and willing to learn even if she were wrong about anything. The food here is good, and the value is better then anything else in Houston IMO. I wish I had better notes or better memory, but please take a que from me and hit lm as soon as you can.
  20. BTW Coffee Groundz in Sugar Land has some good gelato. Its at corner of Hwy 6 and 59.
  21. Closed monday and tuesday! Arrrrgggghhhhh!
  22. OK, if anything is even close to Neals tre scalini then I am there. Thanks, Jay. I had some free time and went searching for the location. That is the exact address, about one block north of Dallas on the west side. The chocolate is indeed "squisito". It reminded me of a gelato version of the once-famous "Tre Scalini" from Neal's Ice Cream shop on Kirby in the early '80's. I got a double scooper--the cherry is even better, if possible. The owner told me he gets the cherries out of Washington state, and they are purty darn close to the amarene you'll fine in Italia. My brother had a double of chocolate and amaretto-- another thumbs up! Their telephone number is 713/594-9864. In this weather, I'm glad that I live 35 miles away, or I'd be hanging out there all of the time! Please support this new (two weeks today) shrine to gelato! ←
  23. Try the Rubiola, leek and pancetta. I'd like to see what others think. Its my fav, atleast I think it is. The truffle is sooo good as well.
  24. Had a very good meal here this weekend, Randy took care of us with a 15 course epic. Will post more detail soon.
  25. I got there at 8pm on a friday, or was it saturday and we were sat right away. So my guess is no matter what time it is you are good? So you have to wait a few minutes and sit at the bar and look at those pizzas?
