  1. Joie took pictures of two treats we had yesterday--the cassis banana split (with chocolate sauce, maple rum sauce, and raspberry sauce) and the flourless chocolate tart with pistachio ice-cream. The tart was out of this world! Made with 66% Valrhona, it was dense and delivered a much-needed hit of chocolate after all those drinks we consumed. I would give the tart a 9/10....I like it even better than the Chocolate Ganache cake at Pane from Heaven!
  2. ^I'll be awaiting your Lilykate review after the 22nd...
  3. I think they're talking about heckling Bob Blummer, aka The Surreal Gourmet.
  4. I used to buy the cinnamon buns all the time when I was in first year. They're big and cheap, but not particularly good.... My favourite place to eat on campus is The Deli, in the lower level of the SUB building. I always get the date square. They have sandwiches (made to order), samosas, curries, rotis, etc. Cheap and pretty tasty (would not recommend their cookies though--go upstairs and get them from Blue Chip instead.) I also eat the burgers and mozzerella sticks (among other deep-fried goodies) at The Pit Pub. They have a take-out window as well. In The Village (right by the McDonald's), they have some cheap food downstairs, including Vietnamese subs. These recommendations are just for times when you need food right away--I would certainly suggest going off-campus for better food!
  5. Wabi Sabi on W. 10th Mix the Bakery (for lunches and good bread), also on W. 10th
  6. Okay, NOW I'm really interested!! A. ← Just a warning--the lines for the free food can be quite long! I also bought those tickets that you can cash in for samples from restaurants, but I don't remember eating anything particularly great (except maybe the mango lassi.)
  7. If you can eat a lot, the $12 ticket is well worth it. I went 2 years ago and I could barely waddle out of the stadium when it was over. I remember seeing Christine Cushing on stage...and Thomas Haas too. I thought it was a fun event.
  8. Wendy, thanks for taking the time to post pictures of your recent work! I have two questions: -(If it's not too tacky to ask....) How much do members at the club pay to come to a buffet, on average? -What sort of party did you create the handbag cakes for? A fashionista's b-day?
  9. I love Ajisai, but I thought Deborah was thinking about staying downtown.... If location is not an issue, then I would recommend Ajisai. It can get pricey though, depending on what you order (well, as with all places....)
  10. Most fish comes in from Japan on Tuesday, I believe. Except for bluefin tuna, which comes in on Wednesday. And I think Wednesday and Thursday are supposedly the best days to go if you want to be served the freshest fish...although I suppose you can go Tuesday night and ask if they will serve you any of the freshest stuff!
  11. I bought horse meat at Columbus Meats in Vancouver. I'll admit to feeling squeamish when I first heard (a few years ago) that horse meat was regularly consumed in other areas of the world, but the taste is just fantastic. So buttery and soft...definitely better than any beef I've eaten.
  12. Uh, is this some new sushi-on-a-naked-man club that you haven't told us about yet? ← And Dammit, Why haven't I been invited yet!! ← Oops....DAVIE! You know what I mean!
  13. I'm interested to know what a pro designer thinks of that lounge!
  14. I believe Saffron on W. 4th has dispensers where you can get reasonably-priced (and good quality) olive oil in "bulk".
  15. Samurai Sushi on 41st and Cambie--the big draw is the size of those rolls. I eat at Samurai Restaurant on David quite often--it's not the same chain, and the fish is quite fresh. I had some really good ika there a few days ago. Bistro Sakana in Yaletown seems to be really popular at lunch time. I paid about $20/person there, and they also have cheaper lunch boxes too.
  16. I love necks, too. Everyone knows that the turkey neck is mine--ALL MINE!!! Once, my uncle grabbed it when he came over for Thanksgiving. Abject silence fell over the table...my family fears my wrath when it comes to food.
  17. The oysters are the best part on a chicken! I always dig those out for myself whenever I roast one.
  18. I have a question too--what is the one item you've produced that you're most proud of? (And do you have a picture?) I remember seeing your posts with the pictures about the Easter-themed table you did at the club last year--so impressive!
  19. I shrieked, "OMIGOD! IT'S A DESSERT BLOG!" as soon as I logged onto Egullet this morning. I love, love, LOVE desserts, and I'm so looking forward to seeing everything you eat! (I'm one of those people who eat desserts as a meal, too )
  20. I'm a member of the mafia? Well...I guess I could be...I'm so badass I got myself banned from a restaurant.
  21. What sort of cuisine do you like? Richmond has terrific Chinese food.
  22. ^I've heard that place serves some sort of green tea cheesecake...or was it green tea mousse? And the bathroom is legendary....
  23. Here's the Sen5es cheesecake: (I wrote my comments in an earlier post.) Here's the cake I had at Pane from Heaven today....sorry about the blurriness (layers of mocha mousse and sponge cake, covered in chocolate ganache and pistachios. IMO, too much cake, not even mousse! A bit dry...I would give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.) Here's the Callebaut chocolate pate from The Pear Tree: This was quite good...they use dark chocolate and the pate is so buttery it just sort of disintegrates as soon as it hits your tongue. (8/10)
  24. ^Which one did you have, and how was it?
  25. I just ate the pain au chocolat from Pane from Heaven. I love how creamy the ganache remains in the center! I like the ganache better in this one, but the pastry from St. Moritz is flakier. One thing I disliked about the one from Pane is that it's covered with dark chocolate squiggles that've hardened; they shatter, fall off, and create a big mess on your counter everytime you take a bite! (I also bought one of Pane's cakes--it's layered with mocha mousse and covered in ganache, sprinkled with ground pistachios. Also very tasty...but I still like the Chocolate ganache cake more.) Also...I got a parking ticket. This is the second time I've gotten a parking ticket in this area! Grrrrr....
